living room design/color advice please!

I’d love advice on how to design our living room. We have a large sofa that is a charcoal/brown color (it’s the crate and barrel lounge sofa with chaise in Truffle); shelves where the TV sits that are a gray/distressed wood on black metal frame, and beige/gray baskets; ivory carpet with very subtle light gray highlights, and super light gray walls with white trim. We currently have an old cedar trunk serving as our coffee table and a wooden bookcase that are clashing with the color scheme. We also have a cream colored accent chair that we want to replace with two chairs but are torn on color. So, looking for advice on coffee table color and chair color.

I’d thought an accent color of royal or navy blue would be nice (maybe something more modern from Article), but I don’t want to space to feel too dark. Maybe cream chairs to tie to the carpet? Or should we add some color so it’s not too drab? Don’t want it to feel hodgepodgey... Have also though about leather accent chairs but am wary of pulling the room in a brown direction as the trunk and bookcase are brown and clash. But maybe it’s look ok since the couch has brown tones.

For the coffee table, I think we should match the tv stand/shelves, but not sure. Maybe just go black metal (maybe a drum?) or maybe black metal frame with concrete top? Black frame with glass top would’ve been great I think but have to avoid because of our little ones.

Pics attached.

Thank you!!

It appears that the sofa and the TV console are both pretty much the same truffle gray/brown. Your floors and the kitchen cabinetry are very reddish, so I would not add any more wood tones. Metal and glass for the coffee table would be good. I would keep the chairs neutral so they'll outlast more trendy color options. Add bright accent color with pillows and a throw based on a new rug where you can inject a bit of excitement and interest. Maybe the cream rug can work in the master bedroom. It looks like you've started with some blue in the niches flanking the window. The 4 matching art pieces flanking the window, and the circles at the end are hung too high. The center circle should be 5' above the floor. You may want to relocated the 4 pieces to hang as a group above the right side TV shelf. I can't see the piece on the right side of the window end. Perhaps it is large enough to work alone over the cabinet on the opposite side. I can't really see the window treatment, but it may be a little fou-fou compared to the more contemporary lines of the sofa and cabinet. Consider using fiber shades there. Here are a couple to look at.

    Thank you!

Unfortunately the rug has to stay. Given that, why kind of neutral would you use for the chairs - cream based, gray based, or some other tone?

For the coffee table, black metal?

Look for swivel chairs so they can be used for both conversation and TV watching. I would look for a neutral tweed. Find the chair and see what fabric it comes in. And then add the blue accessories as suggested above. I think if you replace the coffee table you could probably keep the book case in the corner.

Thanks! What tones should I look for for the chairs? Any examples?

If it was my room I would get the chairs in a light blue. But you have to get what suits you. I also want to buy furniture that I have sat in and know that I find comfortable. But lots of people order online. It's up to you. I would look for swivel chairs that I like and look at the fabric options. Just now I looked online and didn't find a lot besides solid neutrals which I think would be very hard to be sure would work with your sofa. Macy's is having some good sales on their Quick Ship items but they can't be returned to the store, have to be shipped back. I would look at stores in your area to really see what you are getting.

I was thinking something with a pattern would be nice (ikat?) but haven’t found anything that seems right yet - feel like they clash. The solids feel boring. But it could definitely be I’m just not seeing the potential, which is why I’d love to see what others have in mind!

Here are some tables I’ve found that might work. Thoughts?

Can’t see how to edit my post above. Some other table ideas.

Thank you! I hope all the product pics I posted came through for some reason they don’t come up on the app but so on the website.

Would it feel off balanced to have only artwork on one of the walls behind the couch but not where the bookcase is (if I take away the four black and white pics)?

Was thinking of getting more modern chairs to match the design of the couch, instead of the one we have now. The chair we have now is the same color basically as the rug, so good to know that looks ok for the chairs. Was toying with that creamish color or a super light gray, like some of the throw pillows I have.

I would a marble table with a brass base to add material and break things up a bit.

For chairs, consider a light grey like the Vapor chair from article in light grey and oak. I think it will offset the rug.

It’s a nice room and your existing entertainment unit is really cool.

    Good luck,

Thanks! Would the brass clash with the black metal of the tv stand?

I don’t think brass will really clash with he black. You have some more black going around in he room with the frames and the TV console.... I think brass will become really a warmer accent.
