Help! trying to decide arrangement of cabinets

K so this is all new to me, I’m a mother of six girls,I need clean lines, functional, I want to teach them how to cook/bake plan on having 36” gas range and another wall oven, 2 sinks and dishwasher. Unsure on arch cabinet over sink/3 windows. Would like a bake area in corner wondering about what to put above? Is it too deep? Also would like open shelving, wondering if it’s not good near cook range? And do I have enough room for island with 3 stools? I cook 3 meals a day and home school my girls hence, not much time to research all this!! :-)

    Here is the floor layout, I have a table next to stairs. It wasn’t in original plans,put in after floor was poured. So it’s a little tight. On the right of fridge is a support beam, so thought we’d stop cabinets there. There is 4’ ft clearance around bar, a bit less near stairs going down to cool room.

    Cabinet options, I really would like a bake station/area where the double oven is shown, would it work in that corner, with just one oven below counter?

    Here is an actual photo. We’re going to move the wall on the right 18” inches to the right to make room for bigger bar, also for upper cabinets in right corner

    If you use the things on the open shelves often, its not a big deal. We kept our daily plates and bowls on open shelving and we used everything on the shelves every 2-3 days so it didn't really have time to get dirty before getting washed again and it was super convenient. It you are putting things like oil, spices, and flour containers there, they will get very dirty and the heat can destroy things like spices over time.

    I would not put anything over the sink/windows.

    I would put the oven on the flat wall across from the stove wall. You could put an appliance garage in the corner if you want to.

    A nice bench seat (possibly built-in with storage underneath) would go great for that eating area if you don't already have something like that.

    Typically you want 2' per chair, so you're 6" shy of having proper room for 3 seats at the island, but you should be able to fit 3 if they aren't bulky/wide.

    Just saw the comment about the baking station. Do you mean you want a dedicated countertop area specifically for baking, like rolling out dough, or do you mean the double ovens? You could easily have either or both.

    Also, why is there a window in the wall next to the ovens in that image?

    I'd cut the stools altogether, then rotate the island 90 degrees. The reason is that I'm usually cooking or cleaning but not both. The way it's currently positioned, one person will control both of the sinks and whether the dishwasher can be filled or emptied. Because you have plenty children to assist, I'd try to have space for 1-2 working at the clean up sink and at least one person working on both long sides of the island at the same time. A single person cooking could totally stay on the long side of the island, with a dedicated sink and the 36" range and good refrigerator access without crossing paths with people doing clean up or setting the table.

    For clean up and set up to occur, I'd maybe rethink the position of the oven and where dishes may be stored. Do you need second giant oven? JUST the oven and it's cabinet will take almost 16 square feet. Could you get away with a smaller speed oven (convection + microwave) mounted in the island?

    I'm also an open shelf person. I'd rethink the corner between the window wall and the range - perhaps choose to dead end a 30" cabinet, have a 12" filler and then run a 42" shelf + pot rack + tool rail underneath after turning the corner.

    Umm, where are you going to store food?

    I like where the prep sink is in the hand-drawn image, but not the computer one. You don't want it directly across from the main sink. They need to be offset so they can both be used at the same time.

    Great suggestions! In the computer pic the island is wrong I have it drawn, stools facing the three windows. Yes I’d like a bake station where the double ovens are(or somewhere they’d fit! ; /) but with one oven there, so my girls could bake using counter above that oven , while I could cook something on range top and not be crowded. I didn’t clarify (sorry) that there is another 2’ by 5’ window on the left, also door going down to 300 sf cool room where my staples/food etc. Will be so I couldn’t do anything there! Thanks for your input, I’ll have a lot of flow/traffic coming in from living/hall and outside door, here is another view of our layout.

    The area next to your ovens would be a great baking station. They wouldn't have to stand in front of the hot, preheating stove. You could even lower that area of counter and use a different countertop material there that is better for baking.     First of all I recommend you install Hafele magic corners so as to utilize the complete corners. Placing the oven in the corner is not the best use of space. For rolling and cutting dough you will need a surface shorter than a standard counter. I suggest a pullout either island, cutting board or drawer with a change out top of marble and one of wood, Cutters and rolling pins can be store beneath. I definitely would install a lift for your mixer so that it will be at the correct height and easy to store without having to move. TO the left of the stairs is that a wall or an opening? Do you need the door to the stairs? I would use the wall space opposite the table for open shelving if needed, definitely not at the range. Keep the shelving no more than 12 to 16 inches deep. Use free wall space to hang attactive bakeware and separate the inside of at least one lower vertically to store baking sheets, muffin tins etc.I have mine divided vertically on one side and horizontally on the other. Is you table fixed? If not I suggest trying it rotated perpendicular to the wall to free up more wall space for storing flatter attractive bakeware and to fill an awkward void in the room. A rectangular table will take a little less space than oval. I think your plans with your 6 daughters sound heavenly!! Enjoy your project and I hope you will post photos of it in action! By the way, I highly recommend the widest, top of the line Miele oven, It is incredible and also has a dehydrate setting.

    Image posted is sideways. Just some general observations:

    Any kitchen with more than one cook needs walking room between any two cabinets/appliances for two people to pass.

    Sometimes a large rolling cart island that you can roll out onto a patio is preferable to a fixed island with plumbing and electrical. Sometimes a peninsula is actually preferable to an island -- especially in a narrower kitchen.

    Any kitchen that is used a lot will be much more convenient if the "kitchen triangle" -- sink, stove, refrigerator -- is open -- no island blocking the path from any one to the other.

    If those using the kitchen most are right handed, putting the dishwasher to the right of the sink is most convenient and having at least a 16" countertop to the right of the refrigerator is most convenient.

    The heat from ovens or stove adjacent to a refrigerator will cause the refrigerator to run more and, potentially, not last as long.

    You need room behind and several open inches above the refrigerator for the heat from the back coils of the refrigerator to let the heat disburse.

    A microwave also needs room for the heat to disburse -- read instructions that come with appliances in that regard.

    You want to be able to fully open your refrigerator doors in order to be able to pull your veggie draws out all the way for a good cleaning as needed -- putting a refrigerator against a wall that impedes that is not a good idea.

    Every stovetop needs at least a 16" countertop on each side of it.

    A deep double sink is much better for food prep than the single country kitchen sink fad.

    A single lever kitchen faucet enables you to turn on the faucet with a wrist rather than getting the faucet dirty ... such as if your hands have dough or meat juices, etc., on them.

    Having a higher arc (candy cane shape) to your faucet enables you to put larger pots and pans beneath it for adding water or washing them.

    Corner base cabinets with appliances near them can be extremely inconvenient to access -- from the kitchen. I actually once lived in a home that had doors in the base cabinet of corner of the peninsula facing the den for accessing such a corner.

    If you have a double main sink, a second sink is likely a waste of budget dollars.

    Love lots of suezbell's advice. I do contend on a few points though.

    I find with most french door refrigerators, countertop to the left is more convenient because you open the fridge with your right hand and grab things with the left. However an island directly across is the best place to place things.

    You don't need room around all refrigerators. This depends on how the specific fridge works. Older ones required it. Many newer ones don't. You'll want to check your specific fridge.

    A prep sink is not a waste of space if you have several cooks in the kitchen. My mom's kitchen layout is very similar to yours and we use the prep sink all the time when everyone is home. It's especially nice when the main sink is full of dishes, which you know is going to happen.

    I love a single basin sink (not the farmhouse style ones specifically, but large single basins). So much easier to wash large pans and baking sheets. But it's especially nice to have the prep sink in this case so there is another basin to use when you need it.

    May I suggest rethinking your rooms to make it a large semi-formal eat-in kitchen. Doing so will allow more spacing options and give you a heart of the home to be on hand for homework as well as baking and cooking.

    You can even incorporate seating with a leaf table as part of the island allowing for extra company.

    I like a few of lucidos ideas/pics with table in center, just wonder on traffic of working and space, it’s 16 ft. Wide. My fridge and cook range will be plenty far apart, also I’ve considered dishwasher location, too tight in right corner, although most my girls are right handed; )

    Here are all angles of kitchen /dining stairs go up and down. Notice the support beam, I’d like to keep it showing, maybe add more false ones every 4’ ft don’t want to do coffered ceiling , waist of $$ but I do like tall cabinet look which are not used on top, even by me being tall. archway is a double one going to living etc. I’m into healthy food made from scratch, will have a garden cook traditional foods so microwave wouldn’t use. But botch mixer yes and two ovens.we use raw milk, fresh eggs,so have gallons also big pots (which means all big stuff gets washed in sink not dishwasher)for bone broth and soups that’ll last 5 days. Instant pot and vita mix are essential also, so you can see I need a lot of storage. My basement/cool-room will help a ton, but I’ll put small containers of staples I use daily in cabinet/pantry.Oh I try to grind flour weekly, keep in freezer for freshness so.. I’d like to have a flour grinder nearby, but seriously wondering where it’s all going to go!! :-0!

    This kitchen gave me the idea, and lucido! I can have work bar on the right and eating dining chairs on the left. I’m wondering how tall this table/bar is? Could I find chairs that will work for 36” tall, I was thinking 36” since I’m having counter tops 37”1/2” high. I’m 5’11 and I’ll have a lower section of counter near the bake station. What do you think? I’m excited! ; )

    Islands are usually the same height as the perimeter counters. It can feel a little disjointed when moving things between the two if they are a bit off, so I would keep them the same.

    I think you have come a long way in pulling your Needs and Ideas together. It is a very valid point to keep everything in the work area the same height. Fine tuning will be a process. Do not leave a stone unturned as you imagine negotiating the space around the children and reaching for ingredients.

    For example, think where the safest areas will be to put in check and remove hot oven contents and the best path to get the large stock pot from the sink to the stove.

    As far as chairs they come in all heights and designs..If not I can loan you a saw!

    Good to know Emily, I was thinking a lot of people do different heights of counter tops together. So should i do 37” 1/2” like my counters? Yes so many details lucidos! So far the garbage and all appliances and all drawers on lower cabinets

    You mention tall pots. top of the line Miele dishwashers allow you to remove racks for tall pots. I have never had a problem with Miele and one client has had his for 20 years and says it still works like new.. Someone mentioned keeping islands and countertops the same height. I keep my islands slightly shorter (an inch or so is enough). The room looks visually larger and it accommodates those not as tall. You said you like the tall cabinets even though you would not use them. I find them very usefull for things you don;t use often, for holiday bakeware, etc but I use low sided drawers and put labels on the underside of what is in each drawer. These are especially nice above the SubZero TC700. I use 2 of those counterdepth refrigerators together each hinged on the outside so they work French door style. That is another brand I have found lasts indefinitely. I installed my old one in the garage and it is almost 35 years old. Vacuuming the coils every 6 to 12 months is the only maintenance it has required. Another thought on height is a library rail and ladder. Since you are concerned about where to put everything be certain to look at the Hafele and Revashelf catalogues. Also, if you freeze very much, reconsider a microware somewhere, even if in your cool room. Also look into pocket and small French doors inside of full size. It make a huge difference.. I am attaching a photo of the magic corner, toe kick drawers, and a kitchen where the standard height uppers were moved to the ceiling and open shelves under. I hope you will continue to post pictures of your exciting project. It sounds like you will have the perfect home and garden for heirloom living. Where are you located?

    Good thing that you're teaching them how to cook, Bravo! I taught my son and daughter how to cook and my husband taught them both how to change a tire.

    On the second pic are those on the floor (drawers) or on top of fridge? I like the last pic of open shelves on bottom of cabinets would be handy near stove,even if they my get greasy! Thanks so many ideas and so little time our builder/ do everything guy says he’s on to the next house in June! We started our house excavation last June. Our builder/framer started September. We’re making great progress! And I’ll be in it this summer so excited, though stressed with all the decisions coming at me sooo fast my head is spinning we’re in northern Idaho. Almost spring here

    What do you think of these? I like them but not so dark. I have windows that go as high as 8’6” in the kitchen so instead of having all these tall uppers maybe I could break it up and do this? My windows aren’t the same layout, but could look similar??

    Sounds like Miele is a good brand/ appliance. Defiantly will consider, also like idea of a small fridge since I’ll have a long bar/table. And on different heights of counter and bar/table I agree, think it would be just fine a bit shorter. Thanks again! Wish I would’ve known about this Houzz 10 months ago!!
