I would advise against a pergola in a wet snowy area like you have there . . . Would not be too difficult though to install a more attractive portico. Do you want to sit out on a porch there? If not I would keep it simple, redesign the roof, and focus on the back yard if you have one . . .

pinkmountain has a good point. I live in a rainy climate with only occasional snow and my eaves are 3' deep.

At one point I pinned some covers like below. We might do it someday. Its just outside our diy comfort level and budget. Plus once we attach it to the house we have a more involved permitting process.

It's been a couple of years... just came across this post, and am wondering what you ended up doing. If you wouldn't mind, please post some pics of the house as it is now. : )

Would be helpful if you'd return to where this pic was taken, and add two additional pictures that show all the way to the left and right lot lines. (Don't move from the original viewpoint position ... just pivot the camera.)
