Yes choosing an area rug with color and pattern first, then choose upholstered swivel tub chairs in a solid color from your rug. I suggest tub chairs because they are smaller and comfortable and won't overpower your room. Add a couple of coordinating pillows and a grouping of art on the wall behind your sofa.

Rug with some of your blue accent color is next. It should be large enough to slip under the front 1/3 of the sofa and extend past the two ends by a foot or more. Tape that out with painter's tape and see what standard rug size will fit. Bigger is better. If you get a leggy chair it should sit entirely on the rug If a to-the-floor chair or skirted one, it can sit partly on the rug or even completely off it.

You can’t go too big for chairs so tubs are a good choice as for which first probably the rug . I like a rug that does not have an actual pattern so that if you find a fabric for the chairs with a pattern it will work. Houzz has a sale on rugs and there are many in this idea .
