The runner pattern is not contemporary so don't fret over that.

What colors will you be ending up with? What furniture?

We will be keeping the leather couch and bookshelf - still trying to decide on what to fill the room with. Walls throughout the house will be neutral - shades of grey and taupe. The kitchen, which is next to the living room has white cabinets, off white granite and dark wood floors. Also, the runner looks very beige in that picture, it’s actually taupe with a lot of white in it.

You can't see much of the stair runner, so go with what works in your living room.

I would encourage you to fall in love with either an area rug OR a large piece of art for the wall over the sofa. Then that item will become your inspiration or jumping off point for the room. Also, the coffee table is too wide for the scale of the sofa and room. Lastly, make sure you get as big a rug as you can for that area.

Check out natural or faux jute rugs. A neutral rug will give you flexibility in decorating your space.
