As I understand it most carnivorous soils are primarily peat moss, to maximize water retention. One of the problems I have had with peat moss is that their high surface tension means when they do dry out they are hard to force to absorb water again. After a few years, they can compress and become a hardened mass as well. Has anyone here tried growing carnivorous plants in the fines of Turface calcined clay?

If you use the Turface fines there should be a lot of free-standing water, and Turface itself has a great water-retention ability. You would probably need to water more often, but the soil would never compact.
