What size rug works in this room?

I have a very small dining room. It is 96 inches long and 116 inches wide. It is also the main thruway to all the rooms in my small home. I really want to build the room around an area rug. What size works best?

You really need to get the furniture in there first, then get the rug.

Thank you. I have a small table that I made and would like to use, but if I have to buy a round table to be able to use a rug, I will. That’s the decision I’m trying to make. Here is my table:

    It is 64x32.

Just a comment about your table: I love it!

Can you place it in the room so we can see how much space you have as we do't have room dimensions. What chairs will you be using.

Thank you Denita! It definitely slopes, but I'm no carpenter so I just do what I can. Angel, I'm trying to decide which pieces to actually move into the home so it's not physically there. The room is 96 inches long and 116 inches wide. The plan is to get four of these chairs.

The ideal rug size would fill the hole room, because you want the chairs to still be on the rug when they scoot their chair back.

Personally I would make a bench that goes up against the right wall and use your rectangular table in the room. have a rug custom cut to 7'x7' or 8'x7'. You will have to change the light fixture out for something with a longer chain that can swing over the new center of the dining table but the space will flow better if it is a main pass through.

Thank you Sativa! Do you think an 8' square would work? Also, we will have to walk through the dining area from the front door to get to the kitchen and family room, and from the backdoor to get to everything else. Knowing that the area will have so much traffic, should I try to leave a rug free path?

    Or 8' round?

I think a round table would be great in that room. No bench seating, it's so uncomfortable. What are the colors in the rest of the house? I do love your table, though, can you put it in there and take a pic so we can see?

This is 6'7" x 9'. It should work with your table size. https://www.jossandmain.com/rugs/pdp/lindy-rug-lrfy2988.html?piid=19347207

Your best option is to put the table in the room and tape out different rug sizes to see what would work.

The only issue with a round table is that with the room being only 116" wide you would have a tight walkway. 116-60" round table leaves 56" to be split for both sides of your walkways. You would have to reduce the space on the right side of the table to 24" which makes it tight for someone sitting there. And that still only leaves you with a 32" walkway (including chair) to get in through the pass through.

And a bench would be fine for a table that short. You would only have 2 seats along that side, and it is great for kids to climb on in. and 8' square could work but you would want to pull it at least 6" away from the wall, so it will stick into the hallway some.

Another option is only putting the front legs of your bench on the rug and using a 5x7.

The round table I like only has a 48" diameter. Would that be the best option for four people? It's the Downing Dining Table at Serena and Lily. If so, I would use my small table and a daybed as a guestroom/office.

I think a 48" round could work. That would leave you 68" to split. It would also let you use an 8x8 rug.

48" round would work for 4 people. you would need a 8x8 rug, again puling it out away from the wall.

A 8' round rug would also be nice, and it would feel more proportionate than a square in that space.

Hi JudyG, I have a messy eater and love my floors so I’d really prefer a rug if possible. I was thinking Flor tiles would be a good fit for us. However, when I apply the rules as you recommend, I would have basically, a wall to wall area rug. I guess my concern is that this might look silly.

112x80 in a room that is 116x96. Plus, the rug would have to lay horizontally while I want to keep the table vertical so that there is a walkway to the kitchen. What I really want to know is can I get a rug in this room while keeping my table, I know this is working backwards from the standard recommendation.

I think katie has the best suggestion for you - put your cute table in the room and tape out some different rug sizes - that way you can determine what would look to be the ideal rug size for your situation. You could put something on the floor to mimic a 48" round table to see if that is a better size for the room. And keep in mind - rules are meant to be broken once in a while! I have a similar issue in my DR. We just pull the chairs out to where they need to be even though the back sections goes off the rug a little. Our rug doesn't look dinky. (Get a fairly low pile rug so it doesn't feel weird.)

Hey! T. So happy to see you are getting into a new home! I just love your table. Here is scale sketch to help you decide on table for dining room.

Each little square equals one sq ft. You would have about the same space with each table but easier with round at 48”. Chairs with straighter legs would be easier to get around. Do you have to have this room as dining? Or could it be multipurpose? You could get drop leaf table and put against long wall and just pull one leaf up for every day or projects. A couple chairs beside it would work. Just depends on how you want to use this room. I wouldn’t do a rug because of traffic in area. Flor squares would work if you must do rug. But first figure out main purpose/use of room.

Heeeeey Flo! I hope all is well! This is the only option for dining, unfortunately. Your rug point is well taken. I’ll let that go and search for great artwork instead. I figured it was a bad idea because I want the table to come out from the window (as you’ve shown), but the window wall is the long one in real life. I know it’s hard to tell from the pictures.

Everything is great here. Thanks! OK, here is revised sketch. With this sizing, you really need a round table. That table you posted the link to is cute, but holy mackerel! The price! You can get a nice round pedestal table for less and chairs fit under them much better.

I kind of showed how a chair needs "push back space", which you don't have, but when not using it, the chairs need to push as far under the table as possible.

No rug with the round table either or 8’ square?

I’m trying not to do a tulip table because it’s so MCM, right?

The pedestal tulip fits in most modern designs. No way a 8’ square fits in this room. Sorry. Maybe you mean 48” square? That could work but rounds are better in a space like this.

Oh man. Ok, I’m going to let the rug go and hunt for some chairs. I’m planning to order everything May 1. Does the code expire? I know they changed the structure and you have to have one sent to me now.

Another table option. This works with your existing table. Would need to swag or move light fixture. Would give you a bit more walk by space to kit etc.
