Help me with my rectangle living room/dining room combo!

I've posted photos of the house before I purchased it.

I have a brown leather sofa and two beige-ish chairs. Help me have a look including new wall paint, floor layout, curtains, table, rug, etc.

What would you do?

The current green is too dark. :)

Do you have a style or look that you like? Traditional, Modern, Farmhouse????? Any colors you would like to use????

The first thing I would do is paint the ceiling WHITE. Not off white, a bright crisp white. That will brighten up the room quite a bit. I really like to use a satin or eggshell paint on my ceilings. It reflects the light and makes the room brighter and if you need to clean it it cleans way better than flat.

Do you have a dinning set already or do you plan to get a new one?

I like the traditional mixed with farmhouse. Below are photos of my current sofa and two chairs. My biggest issue with the current furniture setup is that it doesn't seem to fit well in the space. Should I have one chair and not two?

I love blues and greens. Below are photos of my leather sofa, and chairs.

The rug clearly doesn't work here. :/

This is our kitchen table below... I'm not opposed to buying a new one, but I like the two tones A LOT. :)

These are also our current curtains, please excuse the lighting it was taken at night. I can buy new curtains if needed.

These are our current side tables (I would prefer to not buy new ones).

    So my biggest struggles include:

    1. What paint color for the walls?

    2. What rug to get? (Do I get new curtains as well?)

    3. What room layout?

Except for the fireplace in the corner, the Previous Owner's layout makes good sense. Nice house!

Do you plan on a TV in the room?

Ditch the ceiling fan!!! Need a nice light over the dining table.

Also, the green walls are very 'in.' I am seeing 'celery' everywhere. Your curtains may look good with the walls.

I'd wait to decide until after I moved my things in.

Awesome thank you! @Jamie I agree with the ceiling fan, we never use it. Any ideas, not too pricey?

@auntthelma I hate the fireplace, but my husband loves it. I would love to replace the fire place with a tall corner shelf to bring the eye up. Is that a bad idea? Is having a fire place a better selling point?

@Jamie Ah yes, we have TV set up very similar to how the previous owner had it set up. Below is a picture. Please excuse my husband in the photo and the terrible quality ( I took the photo at night when we were still re-arranging. )

@auntthelma Yea I think having the green walls being "in" right now, makes it SO much easier to NOT having to paint. :) That's why I found those curtains because they matched so well.

I have a similar layout and I hate it. My space is only 12' wide though, and 24' long. What I hate about mine is that people have to walk single file between the conversation area and the TV.

Which way does that window face? If it is facing north I might even consider putting the couch and chairs on the window wall with a chair at right angles to the couch, at each end, and mount the TV on the solid wall, with some sort of shelving underneath it for interest and toys (I see the child's chair) The wall at the large doorway is larger on that sided, and a comfy chair might fit nicely there. You'd have a conversation circle and a nice large hall down to the dinning area.

ETA, I think the circle curtains are cute. the white shiny ones, not so much with your decor. The circle curtains look nice with your kitchen set too.

    Is that an electric fireplace?

@enduring Ahh that's interesting. I'll need to measure the wall opening on the other end. The window faces the north. The only problem is that the cables run in that corner, but we do have an outlet on the long wall. We could keep the internet cables in that corner still and hide them.

Yea I don't like the white shiny curtains, I sold those. :) Thank you!

@pennydesign The fireplace is a gas fireplace.

So here's what I've gathered so far:

    Keep the walls green

    Possibly rearrange layout

    Keep curtains

Replace ceiling fan. Can someone please send me some ideas?

    Paint ceiling bright white

    Did I miss anything?

I still really could use rug suggestions please! I'm so bad at this! Thank you!

Smaller end tables which would allow the two tan chairs to be separated from each other a bit. Sometimes the angle of the photo makes the actual dimensions look off, so I don’t know if that’s it. The two tan chairs would look nice with a tiny circular glass table between . In an ideal world, you could clean up the tv a bit-cords etc. and a lower profile not as heavy looking console for it would be preferred. Like your dining table! Does it have a leaf?

Thank you @Immcnit I'll play around with the set up to see if it's possible to have room between the two chairs.

Thank you! The table unfortunately does not have a leaf. It's an antique that was restored but I think it originally did.

Well the round dining table is great; if you pull the chairs out a bit from it it will look bigger and more like it fits the space. A keeper though! Ideas for coffee table? Glass rectangular with a storage shelf?

@Immcnitt Thank you! I'll keep the dining room table then! I do love it.

I would love to find a wood coffee table with at least one drawer for storage! A glass top coffee table would look well with the other side tables, but my fear of having a glass top coffee table with a toddler is a bit scary lol!

@Amanda That's such a pretty rug! I looked it up and it's a bit out of my price range. Thank you for the inspiration!!

Ok I rearranged the furniture. I moved the tv console and two chairs and rotated the dining room table.

I still need to rotate the rug.

What do you all think? I think I like it!

I like it. Do you have felt pads on those chairs. Felt is a nice way to help move chairs along the floor, in case you want to pull them closer for conversation some evening when you have friends over. Those chairs need a place for drinks. Put coasters on the TV stand at each end. Can you push the TV back on the stand so you have some more room in front?

Dining room table and chairs are definitely a win. If you wanted to do more in that room, a console table could definitely be added and would serve storage purpose and serving. Art would be preferred to the mirror, but I’ll try not to be picky. Hard to know if there is room there though for the console. I like the tv on that wall and not angled. Chairs look good there and it’s certainly an option but...you’ve now just lost 2 seats to view the tv from. Again, I don’t know how much room you have, but I did like them in their previous spot. Either straight or angled. You need to add more room to the grouping to pull the chairs in closer to the sofa though and this would be accomplished with smaller end tables. Since you’re willing to try things out, remove the end tables and see how much more room you can find for the sofa and 3 chairs. Build out from there.

And one more thing, check out the Pottery Barn tanner collection of end tables and coffee table. (Just saw a special deal running currently too). I know you are hesitant about the glass top with a toddler and that will be your decision. You could always put soft corners on and cover it up with a soft quilt for everyday running around in there. I think it would add some neutrality and function to the room.

I doubt it will work, but can you pull the grouping together more, and have the lane of traffic on the outside of the grouping, such as bringing the couch in toward the tv, then traffic would go along the wall, from the large doorway. it might not be enough room.

Or mount the TV on the wall, (and a mount large enough for a larger TV in the future if you feel the current on is too small.) Then pull the chairs near the couch onto the rug, for a conversation grouping. The lane of traffic is now along the windows. Use the tv console nearby for storage.

I don't like the chair in that corner...I think it will look better with the tv console centered on the wall to the right of the window (you can angle just the tv if it's better for you)...and both chairs on other side of it.

A new rug would work wonders, here. Is it in your budget? Something a little softer looking.

I would suggest TWO matching rugs, one in the living room area and one in the dining area.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

@Enduring I definitely can push the TV back on the stand. I don't think I have enough room to allow the back of the sofa to be a walk way.

@Immcnitt I like the idea of a console table.

I'll see about playing around with the layout over the next few days. I agree with the chair in the corner, it is a bit odd.

I do think the layout is TOO open now and makes the table look far to small. Hmm.

@Jamie Our ceilings are too high, would the new lighting need to be shorter?

@Jamie I would love a new rug in the living room for sure. I hadn't thought about a rug in the dining room, maybe that would make that space feel so open now.

Just wanted to add that your table and chairs look charming over there!

A new chandelier would be amazing (plus a fan over food? Unless you serve super hot food, it's kinda useless...)

Perhaps you just need to become accustomed to the space ?

Let's look at lovely light fixtures! What's your style?

Could you ever post a floor plan of your home? I absolutely adore the outside of your house, I'm purely curious how the rooms are laid out inside. Such a classic 60's
