Hi All, We removed the wallpaper and will only be painting (decided not to do a backsplash). The walls are only primed. Cabinets are now sw alabaster (see photo). The dining room next to it is BM Blue Ice - don't ask. Not sure how long I will have blue ice. I have SW lattice next to the green counter - not the best color. I will look at a lighter shade of green next. I could do 2 colors, but that might be tricky. Please keep the ideas coming! Thanks everyone.

better photo - green counter, above cabinet with sw alabaster. looking for paint color to go above counter (where i took off the wallpaper). thanks :)

Take a look at SW6473 and 6466. Counters are somewhere in between those. I don't think I can do green walls...if I go up on the strip, it gets minty. Unfortunately, sage doesn't work too well. We ruled out yellow and blue and brown. Very limited. Just need something to work with the green and then I can hang pics. thanks

What about Nurture Green or Quietude? Lacewing is pretty too..

So difficult to do this online as monitors lie all the time...

It may take a little time to find the right shade for the green in your counters, but have you considered a very light or pale apricot/peach color? Orange is a great contrast for both green and blue. I used a tone like that once in a living room and it was beautiful especially because of the way it reflected in sun light. With your white cabinets it could be quite pretty too. not saying this is the best match at all but see how the green and that first peachy color work in the photo below? (6481 & 6638)

Or Avid apricot is another pretty pale orange that might work

ETA: You may even look at a cream that has a orangie base to it (as opposed to yellow or gray)

The ones I am looking at are a snooze! I am considering 7651, 7654, 9165 and 7657. I will your share your ideas tonight. Definitely will get undercabinet lights, too.

lukkiirish has a good point...before our recent paint job to a green, our kitchen was a terracotta color. I wanted it to look like a lighter version of a clay pot.. :) We had a lot of green in our adjoining room so couldn't do green there too...

I loved the warmth it brought to the kitchen.

It took a bit of trial and error, but I loved it.

Chivalry Copper is nice...you could accent with all sorts of copper accessories..

So Salmon Creek (Behr) and the Posy (SW) are much closer to the one I used in my living room. It wasn’t a blatant orange, it was more a tone, but oh so pretty.

Another example of a pretty sample on the walls, no green, I know, but still a good visual I think. Also, don’t limit yourself to SW colors, they have the formula’s for all the manufactures and can mix which ever you want.

Hi! Going full circle. Most likely a warm gray - looking at mindful gray or dorian gray. The terracota is tempting as is the copper! Thanks for reminder to look at all paint companies, too!

..just to share my experience of someone trying to find the perfect warm gray (with green as they say undertone)

don't forget to look under "whites" in the store:)

yes, you might end up with off white too..but so what if it's your perfect very very very very light gray?.. :)

look everywhere..whatever they name the color.

Even though I must say I'm very influenced by names they give so "Dorian Gray" would be tempting lol. "Jane Grey" would be even better

For our library I was choosing between two colors(lets call them taupes..I love both neutrals and "true" colors and use all of these in paint, they just need to be on the warmer muddier side, because I'm a warm, muddy sorta person..for the paint I mean)) that were too similar. We went to the store. All the folks in the store looked at the samples and couldn't see the difference either. In the end they just read the formulas. The formulas were nearly identical..some minimal, 0.1 point difference in one of the components, which normal human eye is unable to detect. Big relief because I was already going blind trying to see how these two are different colors, and which should I choose. That's when name of the color helped-I chose the paint with a prettier name..:)

I really did enjoy looking at the salmon & terracota against the green counters....so beautiful. But it wasn't unanimous :( Back to my frienly SW store today. Decided on Anew Grey. Has anyone increased the formula by 50%? Thanks!

I don't want to sound married to my suggestion but did you try Tidewater? It really is a very livable colour and looks fresh without being too bright or baby boy blue. If you like the way an evergreen tree looks against a summer sky you'll like this lol!

My forest green chair against my Tidewater living room wall, just for your consideration :-)

Debbie Stalsberg thanked miss lindsey (She/Her)

Good suggestion on the tidewater...but I have BM blue ice adjacent...too much blue then. Now we are back to the greens. Anew gray was too brown anyways, Ugh.

Do you still feel like this:

"Not sure how long I will have blue ice." ??

Cause we can open a whole can of worms here lol

Any suggestions on a sagey green? So many of the greens are going minty on me. thanks everyone. :)

You need to look for a green that has more yellow than blue...

I had the same problem. I didn't want a pastel green or a minty green. I ended up with a Farrow and Ball color.

Difficult to do on a monitor but try SW Ryegrass

    Debbie Stalsberg thanked User

Can you remind me, did you try nurture green?

It looks like Shamrock is a good match for your counter, at least on my screen. Nurture Green is on the same strip.

Debbie Stalsberg thanked miss lindsey (She/Her)

I will check out the nurture green, ryegrass and napery.

lol...not opening up another can or worms. still have 2 more primed only rooms after this one. (2 baths with wallpaper taken down)

Anybody think rice grain or wool skein are ok choices? thanks

    Look at 6170!

Do you have Dunn Edwards where you live?

my favorite sage green is from them

no idea how it'd look in your kitchen though. different light, all that. but I'm in love with that color.

    Debbie Stalsberg thanked aprilneverends
  • 7 years ago

no, dunn edwards. but thanks for the help.

Debbie, I have SW Wool Skein in my east facing DR, and it does look green.

We looked at Benjamin Moore Limesicle and Frosty Lime (I really liked the Green Hydrangea but it was too much for our small kitchen).

What did we end up with? BM Windham Cream, which looks yellow in my kitchen. Cabinets are not white, but are a cream color from SW.

You could try BM Swiss Coffee, which most people consider an off-white, but it is a barely there green color in our lighting. Our countertops are also green (a mottled sea-green granite), and next week all our kitchen and hallway walls will be Swiss Coffee. It took me a couple of years and lots of test pots to settle on that color because I have to consider every little factor in a space. I also love lindsey's suggestion (and visual example), but I'm partial to the blues and greens of nature :)

Not sure if your counters would be classified as Forest Green, but here is a whole article about choosing paint colors to complement Forest Green surfaces.

Have you considered replacing the counters with a less bossy color? A cream laminate would be reasonably priced and look nice in your space. I would check out Ikea or a big box store. Without the green you could decorate how you like.

I moved into a house with a very similar kitchen but we had a horrid forest green and brown backsplash. I tried for a year to decorate around it, thinking we would wait until we made a major update to change it. I finally tore it off and was sad that I didn't do it sooner. It made such a big difference in the kitchen.

Oh boy...I just had the walls all prepped and if I replace the counters, I may make a big mess. I am looking more in the gray/green, gray/blue/green colors for paint...like the article says. thanks everyone

I painted one of my rooms SW Garden Sage. Don't know how it will work with your counter, but if you are looking for a sage, it may.

I have a green kitchen counter, I used SW Canvas Tan (it's in the white family) adjacent to it. Will depend on your actual green, hard to tell on monitors.

Choosing SW Conservative Gray. Will upload pics once painted. See the window below which is above the kitchen sink. I had the green checked valence on it. There is one other window that is about the same size. It also had a green checked valence. Should I rehang the valences? Or how can I update to give us a little color and a little shield from the outside? I would want something very easy to maintain. The trim on the windows is SW alabaster. Thank you

Roman shades for the windows. Either a pretty fabric or woven wood blinds. Check JCPenney, very reasonable prices.

    last modified: 7 years ago

I know a lot of people prefer shades of some sort but I think fabric on windows is pretty and helps to bring color to the room. You could have a set of valances made with a fabric of your choice; one that can combine all the colors you have in the room. There’s so many styles to choose from too including faux romans.

I did that with our kitchen and dining room through a shop on Etsy. I was really surprised at how affordable it was to have something custom made. It was actually comparable to what you might pay at JCP but so much better.

If that’s something you think you’d be interested in doing, I can refer you to the shop I used. My Mom was a seamstress so I’m a bit picky but the gal did a fabulous job and her prices are more than reasonable for the quality of work she does.

I love the rice grain...It has a hint of green that would really look great with your counter and cabinets but not compete with the blue in the other room...

Here is the shop address and pictures of the valances I had made. They’re lined, the pattern in the larger one is matched up so it looks like one piece and the seams are under the sashes. They’re beyond perfect plus the turn around time was great and they returned all the unused fabric to me. Sorry, the pictures don’t show them very well. Oh! And if you find a style you want that they don’t have on their site, just ask them, they will most likely be able to accomodate you. I plan on having valances for my walk in pantry and our masterbath made by the as well.

BTW. Sellers charge a fortune for those signs, but they are not hard or expensive to make. There are a ton of youtube videos that provide step by step instructions and by doing it yourself you can be more creative with your message. I’ve DIY’d a lot of the projects in our home and I can’t begin to tell you how much more personal and individualized your home becomes as a result. It’s pretty addictive. :c)

Woo Hoo! Finally decided on SW Relaxed Khaki 6149!! Time now to work on wall decor. Thanks for your patience. Anybody have an idea for a color that goes well with SW Relaxed Khaki? I have an adjoining L shape dining/living room that needs a fresh coat. It is currently BM Blue Ice - 5 years too long. Thank you for your helpfulness.

I would keep working with the Khaki on your walls. It is the perfect greige with your white woodwork and I think it would be versatile!!! If this is too dark for your rooms, than look at the color strip it appears in and go a couple of shades lighter.
