You sound like you have a good grip on the picture (excuse the pun). Keep the family photos to a minimum. Only the great ones make the wall, the rest keep on disc or in an album. Keep photos and fine art separate. Think about what you are trying to say.....do you want to have your family photos all over the home or just in personal areas? There are 2 schools of thought on this. The French never put family photos on the wall, perhaps a few discreet ones in small frames on a table scape, but then again if you are a great photographer, maybe your photos are the mainstay of your art display. A friend of ours has beautiful b/w blow ups of her children in like minded frames all over the home and they look fantastic! So depending on your style which is hidden since you show no photos, you either have art all in the same frames much like a gallery show, or you have an eclectic collection like a museum..... Use what you have for now, keeping large spaces free for a purchase in the near future perhaps. I like the painting a lot. I think the painting should hang according to the artist's vision. I can't tell if the surface of the painting is smooth or not but if there are any paint drips or impasto then it would look weird if the painting were hung in the wrong direction! I agree that the piece is too large for the space. The loveseat is also too large for the space but I can see why you want it there. For me it would be very easy. I would hang that painting over the staircase (centered to the railings) and I would leave the space over the loveseat empty (because of the AC unit). However if you feel you need to put something there, how about a painted skateboard deck (I have a yellow one in my kitchen which has cartoon eyes and says Stimulus that would look really great above your loveseat) or a Dogon piece or a Maori paddle. Something 3 dimensional that won't compete with the AC unit.
