The first orders are here and outside at last!

From ARE:

Florentina

Golden Gate

Cl. Belinda's Dream

Belinda's Blush

Winter Sunset

Lady of Shalott

and you can just see my tray of garden seedlings too.

From Chamblee's

Bourdeux blooming it's head off!

Ruby Ice loaded with buds

Pink Don Juan with a big fat bud

Pink Enchantment

I am a little bit concerned about Pink Don Juan - some of the foliage had these spots on it

and only PDJ had this. I'm going to look around via Google and see what I can find out.

They're finally out of the garage, hopefully for good!

Nice group of roses. Just remember to put Pink Enchantment in the back of what ever area she is going. She WILL get tall.

Those spots are just spray residue and wash off. They look good.

Maybe it's your camera work, but the Chamblee's specimens look very impressive - especially considering their prices (just went to their website). Was there talk, here, within the last several months, about them possibly closing? After seeing the photo, I'd certainly consider them for future orders.

The Chamblee's roses do look that great! I've talked myself into one more order from them given the quality of these four. I remember that, rifis - I think the owner is retiring and the nursery is going to be put up for sale.

ARE's had been trimmed to fit in the box which doesn't surprise me since they're two gallons and most are climbers. I haven't taken any out of their pots, but they feel substantial.

That's a good reminder about 'Pink Enchantment', Ken - I've still got to finalize my plan for that bed.

Sheila, I'm glad to hear that it's just residue - I was worrying that it was powdery mildew or something like that! A week in the garage couldn't have done any good so I'm just hoping it didn't do any harm.

Yay! My Chamblee order is on the way, and should be here by Thursday. They are my first place to check.

I am 2 hours from Chamblees and know for a fact it is spray residue - nothing to worry about. Their roses are great - I visit every chance I get. The nursery and/or the property is for sale - Mark wants to retire. Property is very high dollar - no bites yet and no talk of closing, last time I was there.

ac91z6, are you and I the guinee pigs for Cl. Belinda's Dream? I've gone back and forth on this rose. I got Florentina last year, but just put her in the ground a month ago so no flowers yet. I expect big things from this rose. Please post on the progress of your other choices as they are all one's for next year's order.

Thanks, Judith. That's exactly what I was hoping for even if it's only once a year with sporadic bloom after that. I have enough trouble growing roses, so if that's your experience with more heat, sun and a longer growing season, I can't expect better. : (( Maybe when I've run out of other ones. I have Cl. LaFrance coming and that should satisfy my big pink rose fetish. : )

How about a "little" pink rose fetish with Mel's Heritage and Barbara Lawrence? These two are total bloom machines! Mel is draping over my front fence just simply covered with pink blooms! Barbara is still in a pot - I received this one as a mistake but what a happy mistake! Going to order another Mel.

I will say that the Cl. Belinda's Dream is a very pretty arching bush....maybe put a couple of clematis plants beneath it for more color. I am thinking about doing this with mine.......

Judith, would you please post a photo of your cl Belinda's Dream? I ordered one last summer from ARE.

Chamblees and ARE are in my opinion, the two best places to order from. Oh and Roses Unlimited too. Chamblee has excellent prices for what you get. In total you pay about $18 per rose bush including shipping. Their only fault is they dont offer too huge a variety. Maybe thats how they keep costs down though and thats fine by me. ARE charges $28 (including shipping) but the plants are 2x the size and are of great quality. RU charges $24 a rose but have an awesome selection (as does ARE). Next on my list is Rogue Valley at $20 per band without shipping but they are good for hard to find varieties. Angel Gardens and Rose Petals Nurseries are also a bargain at $15 per rose not including shipping, however they always seem to be out of stock and only offer OGR's for the most part. K&M roses is an amazing source for Fortuniana root stock, but they are expensive. Plants are big, healthy and grafted though, so worth the price IMO. Cool Roses is also a great source for fortuniana roses, but they are local for me so I've never mail ordered from them.

Bordeux is an awesome rose and somewhat underrated in my opinion. I think it will become more popular as word of mouth spreads about it. Its extemely healthy and the blooms are gorgeous for such an easy care rose.

I'm very curious about Belinda's Blush. I contemplated ordering it and then passed it up, only to regret it. When i went back to order it, it was sold out. :(

Let me know how that one does for you. :)

Burlington is also excellent both for the price and unusual selection as well as her shipping costs. Cool Roses also sells own-root and has excellent shipping costs if one gets 4+ roses.

SoFl I have Belinda's Blush. Going to be planting her Sunday hopefully. I was very excited to see Belinda in another color. That last freeze/thaw did a number on my BD. I'm sure they are alive, but I need to get up the courage to go out, and whack them down.

Summer, my Cl. Belinda's Dream has finished blooming and I didn't get any photos, but it is very similar to Belinda's Dream, maybe not as big and full. Very pretty pink. The shape of the bush is pretty - very healthy and strong, never have seen any blackspot.

Thanks Judith. I am pretty happy mine is still alive after this cold winter, it had no blooms last year.
