Need new colors and maybe a new layout? Please help!

We decorated our open plan living/dining/kitchen area 9 years ago with some help from an interior designer. We love it but got tired of all the creamy/beige colors. Also, we love to entertain (do it a lot) and everyone ends up in the kitchen vs the living room. Maybe a different layout in the living area would help. Maybe a sitting and bar area? we have a 6 and 7 year old. Also a dog that is mostly outside and a cat (think hair). I love my sofas and my husband not so much but they have to stay somehow. We want to paint our kitchen, do the countertop, backsplash, new modern farmer sink. I want the wood furniture to contrast everything else (therefore painting the kitchen cabinets maybe two colors, But we are scare to our bones of messing things up! We love clean lines, zen style vibe. And with kids a fresh happy environment is a must. But we also wish to have a pop of color. Help is more than welcome!

Top pic is from front house wall looking in. the room in the back is the kids play room.

Hi @Home Interiors with Ease I liked those as well. I ordered the hallway lights. A simple silvery flush mount. I'm also thinking about the dining room chairs. I feel getting new ones is out of budget, changing the upholstery is the way to go. In terms of fabric I thought of a dark blue pinstripe, kind of gentleman suit. Completely off? jajaja!

Are the original slip covers you had cotton canvas? They could be dyed any color you want..

Julie, I got rid of the slipcovers. Also, they became my cat scratchpad; they were ruined, therefore no more slipcovers in this house! BTW the cat has been pretty good with the new chairs and rug so far... he only tried to scratch them once...

Anyway, that's why I'm looking into fabrics.

hi!!! I've been MIA. Got the Frontgate pillow cover. Is gorgeous! Still debating on window covers. I hope to make calls this to finally have sofa upholstered.
Need to decide on what fabric to use for the chairs. Need you Julie! 😊

Happy Sunday! @homeinteriorswithease I saw a picture that made me wonder about the colors for my dining chairs. would a rust color as in the rug, pillow and art work for the dining chairs? it could be really striking?

@Missverahome I love those chairs, table too. Can you share the source? TIA

all I know from Instagram is Darryll Farrell Design.

@Missverahome look like table is Darryll Farrell Design but not chairs. If anyone has a source for chairs like or similar to these please post! Thanks.

Both the chairs and table are striking! I did a google search on Dactylion Design and this is what I found--they look custom and expensive--

Hey sorry the chair was for CEM TOSA..similar to the chairs you posted in the green velvet.

so you are going to reupholster dining chairs or do slipcovers?

Julie, reupholster. No more slipcovers with our cat!

I'd be interested in seeing what kind of costs you get for covering the chairs (labor only)

  • PRO

Ok so cost of fabric and than labor you could most likely get new chairs...are they really high quality?

Hi Julie, they are not high end. I contacted an upholsterer today. Let's see what he says $
Also, dining chairs locally are expensive. Right now I cant visit stores, Covid #'s are high right now. q

what was the price for your dining chairs? Is it worth it?

he quoted the sofa... I need to send him the pic of the chairs. I've been super busy with work and I forgot to send him the chairs pics.

HI! I've been MIA for a few days. Busy with work, and kids starting school online. No update on the living room. Insert pillows arrive. Still a couple of weeks for sofa to be done. Hallway lights are here. One is already installed. We've been busy fixing some issues in my daughter's bedroom and bathroom. They were painted and now I'm DIYing some things for here. I think it will look great, I'll show you some pics when it is completed. @Home Interiors with Ease Hi Julie! Hope you're well.

hi!! Hallway is looking better. Artwork is in. Doors will be painted hopefully in a month or so.

I enjoyed your house photos, interesting ....

The kitchen wall of appliances has the cool metal finish...a consideration for chalk paint blue, of indigo items you have? Appliances would a bit blend in, not contrast as much [as with wood coloring]...

Hi! @homeinteriorswithease we are moving along, somewhat slow... more curtains will be installed today!

Hi everdebz what do you mean?

Missverahome, I should ask whether you are still making changes to your kitchen ? that was my wild idea.

We are considering painting the cabinets.... no decision yet.

Ok. Idk what the 'sight lines' are when you stand in every room there. But an idea is to accent one wall of cabinets, the one with appliances [in a cool tone]. I thought of blue, not necessarily bright....

    hmmm interesting.

I want to comment on a side thing: the piece of square art [behind dining set] seems to crowd the small wall, and the views around it. Could art go where small shelves are in play room?

This might be bright, but only pic I found.

Houzz: Cabinet and island Van Deusen Blue, Benjamin Moore. This regal hue can be used for that featured kitchen island. Or, try painting just your lower cabinets deep teal with the upper cabinets painted a pale neutral like white. It will create a rich contrast. Deep teal works best with pale finishes — think white, ivory and light gray. For hardware and fixtures, almost any shade of metal will shine nicely against this fabulous green- blue.

I'm certainly not able to see what's best - here's one quote:

Rainwashed (SW 6211) is a beautiful blue paint color that has a lot of green undertones / has an LRV of 59, so while it is a light color, it has slightly more depth than others / It is light and fresh, with just a dash of moodiness. / Featured as an alternative on my whole house color scheme, Rainwashed is a beautiful choice for a bathroom, bedroom, or kitchen.

SW gives your rug color to go with their Cascades paint color.

Seems muted blue-greens go with beige walls fine.
