Gray and green - which one for cabinets/ walls?

I thought I had my kitchen colour scheme all sorted, but I've ended up revisiting the cabinet colour after a previous post. I was originally going to do SW Mindful Gray cabinets (colour card on tile below - tile is the only thing that's fixed at the moment), but I'm thinking that green will complement the tile better (I'm liking the greens in the pics below). Question:

1. Should I do gray on the cabinets and green on the walls? This would provide a nice contrast with the white on the window frames, etc. But I can't find pictures of grey cabs with green walls that aren't hideous - the cabinets that look nice are all cream. Is there a shade of gray that goes with some shade of green?

2. Do green cabinets and leave the walls white? Any green paint recommendations?

Backsplash and counter will be white quartz of some sort with white herringbone.

I’m biased because green is my favorite color, but I think the green and creamy or white are beautiful together. I don’t care for the gray at all, though it’s trendy and lot of people like it. There are a lot of posts on here from people who do gray and then can’t figure out how to add some warmth and life to their room.

If you like your inspiration pics, go for it. Check the color of your countertops and backsplash against any paint colors you consider as white counters may not work well with an off white wall color.

Don't mix cool (grays) and warm tones; it's hard to do it well. Pick one and go from there.

You can't find pictures, because gray walls and green cabinetry will be muddy and hideous. Green on the walls is an option with white cabinetry. Or soft green cabinetry, and soft white walls. Pick a palette, but gray is the odd man out.

The brighter and cleaner/cooler your whites? So too the brighter, cleaner, fresher the green..............

I wouldn't mix green and grey. Theyre both kind of muddy and dark, especially since the 2 colors you like are similar in shade. I also wouldn't paint cabinets green since you might get sick of it. I would do creamy cabinets (like Navajo white or ivory tusk) with soft green walls. You could do a fun forest green accent color for an island or the trim if you wanted.

Also, to me, mindful gray reads very blue. So it would look like you had two colors going on. But you could always do white + gray owl, since gray owl can look green in the light. That might be enough of a green fix for you.

Have repose Grey cabinets and comfort Grey (green Grey) walls. I think it works well. You can also consider the comfort Grey for your cabinets.

I love green cabinets and different shades of gray just as much as the next person, but when you’re updating a kitchen, I would strongly advise you to think really practically. Gray is a fad and IMO, the industry is so saturated with it, it’s appeal is starting to wain a bit. Also, cabinets are not cheap or easy to paint that’s why most people just use color on their islands. I mean it looks good too but think about it, an island would be much easier to paint 10 years from now then a kitchen of cabinets right? My suggestion would be to skip using a color on your cabinets, stick with white so you have lots of color options over time. If you have an island, paint that the pretty green or gray that you like. If you don’t have an island, use the color on your walls and bring hints of gray in via accessories or even your backsplash. You can add all the color you want against that neutral back drop but at least you won’t be “stuck” in one era.

I would paint a cabinet door sized board with both colors rather than trying to make a decision from a tiny swatch. I would agree with the comments that a gentle / muted green would not go well on walls with gray cabinets. Have you considered white or cream cabinets? That would go well with a muted green wall color.

We have a mixture of pale green and cream cabinets and did the walls a pale green as well. I would not consider gray with this kitchen.

You're all making a lot of sense with the incompatibility of green
and grey... I think it would require a bit of skill to pull it off, and
it looks like it would still need some cream thrown in to pull it together (pic
1 below). I think in my head I was thinking of a grey that's rather
taupey-cream (so maybe not Mindful Gray)... a bit like the cabinet
against the wall in pic 2, along with (something less olive than) the bolder island green in front. So maybe that's actually a version of cream and green more than grey and green?

My reluctance to using full-on cream
was a) I had a white countertop and backsplash stuck in my head which
seems like it would clash with the cream and b) it reads a bit
old-fashioned to me. But I think I need to look at more pictures and
explore this option... maybe match with a creamier backsplash/ counter. The other option as some folks have suggested would be greenish grey cabinets (pic 3)... hmm... no island unfortunately to only do a pop of green on. Although I do have a breakfast nook...

Thanks DrB477 for those very helpful pictures! You have a lovely kitchen!

aprilneverends - such a lovely post and great advice, thank you! I agree with every word :)

I think the third picture from the top with the purple flowers makes me happiest. Just because it allows for a lovely green that I'm too chicken to put on my cabinets. Now to put aside my preconceptions and explore the possibility of buttery cream cabinets...

This has been very helpful everyone, and has taken me in a very different direction!

Elle - love the Navajo white! Such a nice soft colour. I'm actually getting excited about the prospect of cream cabinets now. Who would have thunk.

April never ends- what color griege cabinets did you go with? I am having cabinets painted and am leaning toward Sw agreeable gray bc it seems a warm grey. I have not been able to find many pics of cabinets in this color but lots of walls.

I couldn't find anything at first. The samples..not the chips, the doors themselves were lacqured in colors of my choice(lacquer/varnish is made differently than paint, formula's different, even if result seems the same)

I picked the warmest colored ones, from different companies..Revere Pewter, Elephant Breath, etc, and they all looked great when lying down on some surface. Then I put them vertically, -which one has to do to check the color, as they'd be installed vertically-the light will be reflected differently, and the color will slightly change. So, when I put them vertically., the colors all seemed too cool to me. Not how I envisioned it to be.

Was fortunate that our cabinetmaker let me grab everything he happened to have in his shop, check in my place. Other custom jobs of his. I left with 12 or so doors, spent days looking at them, in this light, in that light..don't ask.

In the end it was a color custom mixed by some designer that was the winner. Didn't have a name. I called it april gray..))

But. Later I discovered a color by BM that I missed back then, and that might be kinda close. Maybe very close. So check this one out maybe? It's called Kingsport Gray. Very warm.

Agreeable Gray I don't remember checking myself, but yes seems a good color to try, from what I read and saw.

Ask for samples if you can ..I don't know whether you're going with lacquer or paint, but in any case-ask for samples in colors you think about, They usually will give you three or four, so you can test them, look at them. In different light, with your other elements if you have them (floor? tiles? countertop?) Put them vertically, so you'll get the right impression. It'll still change a bit with light of course, you want to love the color most of the time, and even enjoy the subtle changes.

I'm sorry about the long post, just triggered that memory..me spending a week or so dragging all these greige doors around..:)

Aprilneverends- yes, I am in that boat now. I searched the wall, foam board, old cabinet drawer on the white side. My cabinet maker did say he will make me a sample and I will def try it out in different lights.

This is the forum at its best--- it looks like you may have decided to go with something you were not considering--cream/offwhite cabinets and using the green for the walls. I think the posts about warm cool was really clarifying. I am not one to love gray but I am linking this thread, where the cabinets are gray (but to me are a green gray but that might only be on my monitor) and it looks stupendous and NOT dreary. I think maybe it's the floor that really give is warmth.

    Gray cabinetry -warm kitchen

Of course this is all quite subjective so that is how it looks to me and again, on my monitor. This might have been one of the only gray kitchens that had me thinking about using gray. (but not to worry- it didn't last long. I am at the point of trying to decide on white, cream or wood. at least I eliminated other colors lol)
