Avalyn, I agree with you. Keep the wood mantle and if budget allows, I would do the fireplace surround in stone or marble.

I really like the look of a dark marble, like negro Marquina, with small amount of veins. It creates a modern look and along with the wood mantle it’ll look amazing.
