Wondering what to do about 1/4" kitchen backsplash gaps

Jeff S

We are using wide tiles for our kitchen backsplash, which are just 1/2" less wide than the space between the two upper cabinets above the cooktop. That leaves just 1/4" on each side of the tile where the red lines are in the picture below.

What do we do about these 1/4" spaces? Cut slivers of tile? Grout? Caulk? Schluter?

How are you laying them out? Offset, stack?

are you taking into account the space that will get eaten up by grout?

We are laying them out stacked, not offset. We are touching the tile and grouting without spacers.

jeff,,,the wide tiles you're using on top of the black ones. how big are they,,,each tile? and what is the distance between those upper cabinets?

u are grouting w/o spacers? how big are your grout lines?

post a pic of the tile please

The tiles are 35 7/16" wide, and the distance between the upper cabinets is 35 15/16". So the difference is 1/2", or 1/4" on each side.

There is no black tile, it is metallic and looks black because of the light.

Here a pic of two of the tiles stacked:

Yes, we are not using spacers, there is a thin gap without them. Here is a pic showing the grout line size:

IMO the use of spacers would have solved this problem

Patricia. I would have said the same thing, except he is only using one tile in that space. look at his measurements again in his comment.

ok,,i understand now. you only have space for one tile. 1/4 inch isn't that big of a deal. you could find grout or caulk to match tile color and it should be noticeable.

or do what was mentioned about and cut a piece of schluter metal strip in the same color gray to eat up the 1/4"

use your imagination here w/these photos..

imagine the white tile is yours, up on the wall,,grout, Jolly edge piece and the carpet would be your cabinet

they do come in wider profiles Scheine

so if you ran this edging between the tile and the upper cab, it should eat up some space. even if you were left w/1/8", it's easily caulked w/the same color of your tile and won't be noticeable.

imagine this is your tile,,the edging and the white is your cabinets

Yeah, that is something we are considering. If you look carefully in the first pic, you can see a strip of Jolly Schluter lying on the covered cooktop. We are doing this Monday so will think about it over the weekend. Thanks all for your input!
