replacing art and tying living room and dining

Good morning! And happy Saturday! I would appreciate some suggestions or ideas on how to improve this space. We have a townhouse with a toddler, baby and our oldest, our dog. We are hoping to move within the next five years so don’t want to invest too much on pieces that may not be compatible with a new house. Most of our current pieces are hand me downs or were purchased a while ago. I would like to tie the kitchen and living area and need help decluttering and finding decor pieces. I love art and consider myself pretty knowledgeable about what goes good together but when it comes to home decor that just goes out the window. I would like to take out the flower canvas above the sofa and replace it with something else. I would also like to remove the canvas above the kitchen table but am not sure how to tie together. Sorry for the toys but with the kids, I need an area for them to play in when I cook and go about the day. The swing and jumper will be gone within 5-6 months. Sofas would need to stay as well as living room tables. Also not sure what type of “style” I would be classified in as I’m not too familiar with designer terms and styles

Good morning! No need to apologize about toys. Most of us are moms. :)

Even though you'll be replacing the pictures, they're hung too high (behind loveseat & dining table).

I would focus on finding a larger replacement for your flower painting in a shape that fits your wall (probably more square shaped). Once you find something you love you can draw some inspiration from it. Pick 1-2 colors you like and find some pillows and blankets for the couch, curtains, and decorative knick knacks to add. Use placemats or a runner on the table in a similar color, etc. Also, the orientation of your couch with the back to the dining room cuts it off a little bit, can you rotate the whole setup 90 degrees and/or turn the couch so it faces the loveseat? Finally, I notice that you have a glass coffee table and mirrors framing the tv. Both of those areas are opportunities to bring in some color, texture, life to the room but by using glass/mirror you see more of the same. You could try framing the sides and below the TV in bookcase or storage cubes with pretty fabric baskets, which doubles as room for toy storage. Statement making light fixtures are also a surprisingly affordable way to modernize and brighten a space- check out Wayfair since they always have good sales. You could pick something coordinating for living and dining to unify the spaces.

Woukd a combo like this, or even 2 of the same, be in line with your style? Since your table isn't centered under your dining light, I think a flush mount makes more sense.

Yes, lower artwork. TV looks too high also. How about an upholstered ottoman , preferably with storage, in lieu of the coffee table ? Glass & children, you could either sell or store your current one.

The artwork that is out of character is the pink flower over the loveseat. Assuming you are looking for a decorative piece instead of investment art, start cruising through your local stores or art shows. Home Goods artwork changes completely every three weeks or so in my area. Sidewalk art fairs are every spring and fall in many places. The piece you have over the console table is about the right size. You could switch the pink flower and that piece if you wanted a no-cost quick change.

The chandelier could be swagged so that it is over the center of the table. It'd run a couple hundred dollars to have an electrician make the change in my area.

TV is much too high. I imagine you lean back to watch it. Your other art should be about 5 inches over the couch....take come colors from that for a throw and pillows. I think your room looks very comfy except for the high TV.

The mirrors look a little crowded to me next to the television. You could hang three of them over the couch. The flower plhoto could go next to the tv when it’s lowered, and find something to complement it on the other side.

Also, I like brown, but you’ve got a lot of brown and bronze. I think you need to bring in another color. Challenge yourself to buy some not-brown art, and then pick put some accessories from the colors in the new artwork.

Hi Elle. I definitely want to go bigger for the art above the sofa and will def pull from that for throw and pillows. I have used my sewing machine for other types of projects and am pretty good when it comes to projects so I can probably find a coordinating fabric (once I pick artwork) and make a runner to tie it. I have previously moved the couch to the other side and while I loved it, my husband wasn’t the biggest fan and it also blocked the view of what my daughter was doing in her play area. Do you have any examples of bookcase storage units? I’m a bit stumped on what medium it should be? I have wanted to replace the unit under the tv but am not sure what color or style I should replace it with. By the way love the flush mounts. I have been looking for suggestions on what to replace the one in the living room with and think a gold color will tie in the best.

Thank you K Laurence I will be lowering the artwork , for sure. I will consider an ottoman in the future but not too high on my priority list since I know other things may need replacing first.

jessbee07, I see there's another Elle on Houzz now so I'm deleting my earlier comment to avoid the confusion. :)

@apple_pie_order i will look around for some art. I will also look into centering the chandelier it has been something on my to-do list since it bothers me when I see it off center as I come down the stairs. Here is how the art piece above the console moved to the couch or would me lowered about two more inches (just using the existing nails)

Anglophilia, thanks for your advice. Just not sure how much a great original art piece would be and where to shop for that. Would def be open to some suggestions or ideas

Erinsean thank you for the compliment. Def love a comfy room, just looking to make it stand out a bit more. I will look into lowering the tv, how far down should a tv be. My husband mounted it a bit higher to see from kitchen.

Lois Huneycut, I originally placed the morros there to make the room look bigger from the entrance. If I move them above the couch I’m not sure if it will have the same effect I will tape out the mirrors above the couch and post a pic. Will def bring in another color once I find some artwork that I love.

    Thank you Elle (#2) lol.

I have come across this painting, any thoughts? Does it clash with decor? Possible to make it work? I would have to choose between one because two will not for in that area
  • 7 years ago
Or possibly out of two of these? They are all the same size
  • 7 years ago
Also found this that I loved more because it added color but felt like it would tie in better since it was a bit more subdued? But it didn’t fit above the couch maybe above the play area? Too big? Clashing?
Maybe the blue one above the play area and the console one above the couch? Would it be too crowded?

jess,,,,here is guide for you on hanging art. from the floor up, the CENTER of the art piece should be between 56-60" (center, not the bottom of the frame) . From the floor to center of the TV, should be about 58-60". eye level. everything in that room is hung for 7'6" humans. even the new one over the sofa is still too high. get a tape measure and mark 56" from the floor, onto the wall. now put your art or tv center on that mark. that's where it gets hung. (give or take an inch here or there)

your tv needs to come down at least 8-12". the gray art piece over the desk, bring it down to where your tape marks are.

as for the pictures you're choosing, art is personal. if you like it and it goes w/your colors and decor, get it.

that small boob light is killing me. if you can't do a hanging light, do a semi flush or flush mount.

Thank you Beth! I will be moving all the pieces to the correct height tomorrow. As far as the tv I will have to wait until my husband has time but your guide will def help out. And I’ll put a rush on changing that boob lighting lol.

Sorry other Elle! I didn't even know two people could have the same username.
Here are some examples of under TV storage. You can find lots of DIY hacks for modifying Ikea furniture and they also sell some tv stands with storage on Wayfair. I think the unit would be a great place to add in natural wood tones, maybe with a lighter wood color. They sell the cubes in the light wood tone at Target. Alternately you could do matching bookcases on either side of the TV and something a little different underneath like an ornate chest.
I like your second two sets of art best. I agree you should add some color into the space but a super super bold color might seem harsh in your neutral room. Since you can sew, you can always find a print that matches one of the more subtle colors in the painting and then has a bolder pattern color that coordinates.

I shop for wall art at thrift shops. When people move or redecorate, their old pieces no longer fit and get donated. Lots of interesting things available for a reasonable price.

Thank you Elle (#1) lol. I will look into the storage units and see what I can find. Thanks for your input on the art and yes I can always add a bolder fabric to tie it in. Also thanks Partim, I will take a look around maybe I can find something that will go perfect in the room.

My husband and I bought some incredible art pieces at our local art academy end of school year/graduation exhibition and art sale. We've been going to it for a few years now...Not only we have unique pieces that didn't cost fortunes, but we also supported the emerging artists this way. I'd definitely enquire about what's available in your area!

And also, my 0.02 euros. Your (new) art should something that you should be able to place in your new home as well, regardless that you bought it when you lived in a different house :).

Thank you Hamma! That is a great suggestion I will see what is around the area. :)
