What's the best way to get acoustic insulation on a ceiling?

Hi, I'm improving my flat which is a Victorian conversion and one thing I need to do is add some sort of noise insulation to the ceiling.

I can hear the upstairs neighbours walking, talking and creaking on the floorboards (impact and airborne noise). I think I can sacrifice some of my lovely high ceilings to get a layer of insulation attached to the ceiling. I won't be able to access the flat above, I don't think.

Does anyone have experience with this and might be able to recommend a product and/or installer than can help me with it? Much appreciated, if so – the noise is driving me bananas!

The best solution is to stop it at the source. Carpets and talcum powder will solve 2 of your problems (talc will act as a lubricant between adjacent boards). If the floors squeak between the rafters and bottom of the floorboards, they have to be anchored better, with screws.

You need insulation that has some mass. Lightweight insulation is fine for cutting down reflected sound, but to block transmission you need mass. There is sound-deadening sheetrock. But there is no easy solution to cut down transmission.

Add lead sheeting and a second layer of drywall over it. Mass absorbs sound.
