Kitchen/living/ dining room remodel

So we just redid our downstairs and are adding some finishing touches. My main question is do you think black and white Spanish tiles will be too much between the pantry and fridge in the kitchen? Or even Spanish wall paper? We already have a teal wall and brick wall, so I don’t want it to be too busy. Also, I have mixed feelings on the teal wall, but my husband loves it. It looks better in person, but I can tell some people don’t like it. I want everything to go together and flow well. Last, should I paint the bookshelf white? Any tips are welcome.

I'm not sure this space needs anything else, the most eye-catching issue is all the cords hanging down from your Tv area, you don't need to paint that bookshelf. you need to lose that bookshelf in favor of another wall mounted piece to go with the tv console that is wall mounted already. honestly, that area needs more help. You don't need tiles or wallpaper. Perhaps paint the back wall by the fridge the teal in the dining area to make it more cohesive.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that those cords will be dealt with because I absolutely hate what an eyesore they are. I have a friend who is an electrician so I’m gonna have her do something so that we can hide them. IF we kept the bookshelf I probably wouldn’t put it where it is currently, but I will keep a floating shelf in mind because that makes sense. It was just free and hardly used, so I was hoping to utilize it. Maybe it will be better in the spare bedroom. Thanks!!

No to the black and white tiles. I like the teal. Spread a bit more of it around in the space, maybe in a rug. Lose that bookshelf altogether. Sorry, but it's an eyesore.

Both these rugs are from Surya's Peer Pressure collection. I think they'd go well in your space.

Yes to paint the bookshelf white, and wrap the half-wall with lumber to match the beam and column. This isn't a perfect match for your space, you'll have to use a little imagination.

You definitely don't need anything else going on in terms of bold patterns. The teal is fun but I think it would be much better if you toned it down to a soft mint that didn't demand quite so much attention.
@groveraxle Thanks, those look awesome and I totally agree we need a rug. Did u do that with an app?

And @sjgeorge That’s a great idea!! And might work better because I agree the teal is quite bold. I know there’s a color that would work better, and mint might be it!
Ooops I meant ElleN regarding the mint. And sage ogre that’s a good idea as well. Thanks so much!

If Hubby loves the teal wall, I'd keep it till you can't stand it anymore, then convince him it's time for a change...to red or mustard or something else kind of in-your-face. It's a fun, casual space. Let it be bold.

@groveraxle Thanks for fixing the pic because I couldn’t picture the teal in the kitchen, but it actually doesn’t look too bad. And yes, you totally get the look we are going for. We don’t have kids yet and this isn’t our forever home, so we wanted to have a little fun with it! Whenever we buy our next home it will definitely be more refined haha. And I also like your idea for changing the color! I’ll go along with it for as long as I can haha!!

Here’s a better picture that includes the desk as well and a bit more light. I’d love to know what everyone thinks of the desk and if it’s a keeper, what color should we paint it?

Your t.v. and console are hung too high. Would look much better if they were lowered, a lot.

I like the table -- it relates to the wood of the beam, the coffee table, the dining table, the brick wall. But I'd remove the bookshelf.

Need bigger art in the DR.

We had a very similar green in our DR in our last house. It was fun. Maybe you could carry the green over to the desk in the form of a desk chair?

Jennifer M I don’t disagree with you at ALL about the TV and shelf being lower. I said that to my dad and husband when they installed it, but they thought I was crazy. I will work on convincing them to lower it whenever we deal with the cords. And I think enough people have had issues with the bookshelf for me to want to completely get rid of it haha! Will tell the hubby. As for the painting, I see what you mean. The one we wanted originally for this space was at least double the size if not more and I’m super disappointed I couldn’t make it happen. Might stick with this for a year or so and then start working on convincing my husband we need a new one. Thanks for the input!!

To add to this post, the rug made a huge impact, and the desk is just fine. You dont need a lot of changes here just some final steps.

Your space is very fun and inviting. With a few more tweaks it can also be more cohesive. Once you settle on a wall color you can incorporate it into the rest of the room- pillows on the couch, a blue glass vase of flowers on the table, and a pencil jar on the desk.
The desk is fine. I like that it matches the shade of your dining table. But it's also a great opportunity to infuse some fun into the space. You could keep the top wood and paint the legs to match the teal. Personally I would pick something mid century modern or Scandinavian in white or grey to tie in the kitchen colors. It probably wouldn't hurt to pick one that has a bit more storage to help keep clutter down in the smaller space.

Your coffee table clashes with the color of your floors. Can you pick something to coordinate with your desk or to infuse a bit more color on that side of the room?

I agree that some actual furniture under your tv would be nice. Your wall certainly has enough room to accommodate a real tv stand (although I would still wall mount the tv)

Stephanie, your art is way too small for that wall. I'd either find three more framed prints the same size to go with it, incorporate it into a gallery wall, or just remove it altogether. It's just incongruous there.

I don't know what size it is, but if you're looking for coordinating prints, it looks like it would go with work by Basquiat:

Paint the back wall of the kitchen the teal color, move the DR art there, then find a poster or two and frame them and hang them in the DR.

Maybe the bookshelf can find another home upstairs. Might work in a bathroom with tons of white fluffy towels, and linen bins to stash toiletries.

Love how you have stashed the bikes under the stairwell.

Ok so you guys have been SUPER helpful so far and I feel like I really have a good grasp on the direction I’m going with the downstairs. I purchased some pillow covers to tie in with the teal wall, we are going to paint the desk white and get a chair that will tie in with the dining room and kitchen, and I really want to find a good rug to make the place more cozy and complete. So right now I need suggestions on the rug and chair for the desk. Note: the bookshelf will not be in this room. It’s getting painted white and going in our hallway after we’re done remodeling our bathroom. I will put books and decorations on it. Also, the

Ooops got cut off for some reason. Anyway, I was saying the floating shelf is gonna have to stay for now because we can’t afford to replace it, but maybe in a year I’ll choose something else.

I hate to say this but if you can reuse that dining light maybe in your entry or another area, it's much too small and much too high in the space. I'm not sure it fits the theme you have either. I would paint the bar/pony wall the teal color as well as the back fridge wall. I would not go to matchy on the chair perhaps a teal cushion on it would do the trick. I think a white chair would suit to match the desk.

Grover's suggestions on rugs are perfect and I think she listed the manufacturer.

I think we’re gonna stick with the light because, IMO, it ties into the black handles, faucet and railing, but I see what you’re saying. Maybe we could lower it but over all I’m happy with it. The rugs already suggested just aren’t my style. I’m looking for other opinions because I just don’t think I’d be happy with either of them. I agree with what you’re saying about the chair. I’m looking to make it match with the kitchen, so will go with white or Grey incorporated in some way, probably on the cushion. Was hoping someone could post images of chairs. I really like your idea of painting that wall teal. Will defiantly bring it up to the hubby. Thanks for your suggestions!
This chair is outrageously expensive but I think it's a good inspiration for your fun space. Or there's a more reasonably priced Parsons chair that matches. You could add a light grey woven rug to the desk area to warm that space up as well.

What would you say your rug style is?
ElleN I like that chair, and you’re right, it’s a little pricey but something similar might work. Will have to look around more. As for my rug style for this space, I look at midcentury and Scandinavian when I browse, and want something with maybe grey, and am open to a little color, but would like to keep it as light and simple as possible. In the pictures our place comes off dark because many were taken at night (it’s usually dark by the time I get settled after work), but it feels much brighter in person so I’m just looking for something to match that feeling, if that makes sense. I think the other rugs felt too dark/dull and I just wasn’t feeling those specific patterns. It’s not that they looked bad though, just wasn’t in love. Basically I’m open to whatever looks good, but I want to love it haha! Thanks for your feedback.

The current teal wall, the one you intend to paint, and the toss pillows, plus a rug with a bit of teal will be enough. Add some splashes of red for some real verve. For a desk chair, I'd go with a simple white Eames-style shell chair, no cushion needed.

I'd probably opt for wood legs on the chair.

Grover love that chair and agree about the wood legs! Thanks! ElleN I actually love the second one and have it saved on my wayfair account, but wasn’t 100% sure it would fit the room. Now you have me thinking this, or something similar, would maybe work! And I don’t hate the first one either. Thanks!

Ok so it’s been awhile, but we FINALLY got our rug. What do you guys think? I love it!!
Our other dog was jealous she wasn’t in the photo, so here’s another one haha! I love how the colors really math everything in the house and tie it all together.

    Rug is perfect!

Yay! That makes me happy coming from you :-)
Ok guys, need help again!! What curtains will go with the rug we chose?

You've got a lot vying for attention in this space. I'd go for a plain linen in a color close to the wall color or one of the colors in your rug. You really don't need any more pattern here.

    Nice rug! Room looks great.

Looks to me like you should pull the rug about 1’ further out.

Grover! Now that you say that I completely agree. Will look for something plain. Thanks!!
drdeb1234 Thanks so much! I will try that. Have been wanting to straighten it out a bit anyway because it’s slightly crooked.
