I need help identifying the variety of my banana plant

Hi everyone,

I recently bought some banana plants from a local nursery. They did not know the variety but I bought it anyway. It's not in the best looking condition because it had been rented out and now they were trying to get rid of it so I got a deal.

I was wondering if anyone can help identify what type of banana plant it is. I tried looking online but I'm not so sure. I have only grown Dwarf Cavendish and Musa Basjoo varieties. The underside midrib on the newer leaves are more reddish than the older leaves. The middle part of the top side of the leaf is not red however. I hope that made sense lol.

Thank you!

Any time, I have some in my greenhouse so they get to grow a million times faster, been in the upper 80's low 90's F!

Wow, that's amazing! My goal is to build a greenhouse one day for all my tropical plants I have and want to grow. May i ask where you get all your tropical plants from? Anywhere local or online?

I hope you really make it happen, it changes everything :) I have got some from bradford greenhouses, Sheridan nursery off highway 7& many from Terra in Vaughn. Sometimes amazon will have a banana corm for sale in the summer but not always.

Thank you for the information! I should make a trip to Bradford Greenhouse and Terra soon :)

    Hello, i'm back.

So the bananas have been separated and in the ground for a month now. I have one in a pot. That one has finally started to grow. The ones in the ground are taking longer to do anything. One of them started pushing out a leaf but it slowed down and is just sitting there. The leaf hasn't unfurled yet but looks like its slowly trying to open up, not sure. The other banana plants are not pushing out any leaves. Not sure what is going on. Are they taking time to grow new roots and recover from being separated? Please help.

Also, most of the leaves that were on them, which was only like 1 or 2 per plant when i got them, have died back but the plants themselves are not dying otherwise. The stem is still firm and looking green.

Hi, the leaves dying back is normal for transplant shock. It can set them back 2 weeks if it is not constantly in the 80's F with lots of water.

Sorry for the late response! I thought I had replied. Thank you for getting back!

So, they did finally recover and have been growing nice big leaves. But I have another concern. So the mother plant has been growing smaller leaves. Each new one is smaller than the previous one. There is no difference in care from the other banana plants. Same amount of water, fertilizer and sun. But this will be the 3rd leaf that is much thinner and shorter in comparison to the leaves of it's pups (one of which put out a 3ft long leaf last week). The p-stem of this plant is over 5ft. I will attach pictures. Do you know why this is happening? Thank you in advance! :)

Otherwise could be nutrient related. Thanks, We should know in about a week!

Thank you! I forgot to mention. This banana plant is also pupping. 3 little ones are popping out of the ground. Should i leave them a lone?

I would leave them until they are a foot + tall.

Since we're on the topic of ID-ing, anyone want to give a guess as to what I bought last month... It was in a one gallon container and was purchased at a hardware storein Largo, FL. The pot says it was originally from Dewar Nurseries in Apopka, FL. No other info was given. Thanks in advance!

It looks to be in the cavendish family. Dwarf Cavendish or Grand nain possibly.

    Thanks Matt, appreciate the response!

Thank you. I'll leave the pups for now.

    Update picture of newest leaf:

Yeah see what comes out next. Mine might be going back to normal size. I'll see tomorrow when the leaf opens and post a pic.

So the next leaf is just coming out now. Did yours go back to normal?

Looks like a flag leaf!! Wow congrats!! Make sure you are watering it heavy at this stage. Especially in this heat we're having again.

I'll go take a pic. They are smaller but not totally back to normal.I'm feeding it heavy now.

Thank you!!! I'm soooo excited! I have been growing banana plants since 2012 dreaming to get one to fruit one day. But I always had issues over wintering as i dont have a cold cellar/storage room and limited space. I got lucky this year!

Yes I will be watering heavily for sure. We had heavy rain today so that was great. Should I water heavy every day? Also should i fertilize more frequently. I had been fertilizing about once a week. Occasionally I have missed a week but now i will keep up.

Thanks for all the help. I will keep posting updates. :)

And I'm hoping yours decides to flower/fruit as well. Keeping my fingers crossed for you! :)

Thank you!! It would be nice, the plant is 5 years old now. I'll keep ya updated.

Water heavy and everyday until the temps are in the the lower 20's. Then you can skip a day. I guess you could fertilize until you see little bananas. Then be careful so you don't burn them.

    Okay sounds good. Thank you!

Here is a pic of mine from today. It recently pushed up two new pups making it three now. The biggest pup is now 5 feet tall.

Newest leaf on it's way up. Still small, we'll see what happens!

It looks great. It seems like the leaves are bunching at the top - not in the way where the choke. I read that this happens when its about the to flower right? Let's hope so! :)

So now i'm waiting. I'm trying to be patient lol. This new leaf/flower is taking longer to come out so i'm hoping it's the flower. I can see what looks like the tiniest leaf tip sticking out of the middle but I can't tell if its just the top of the flower as i noticed in pictures that some have what looks like a mini leaf on top.

I see now in my pic that the top stem below the leaves it's cracking/widening up. Yes I read that as well. True from pics on the internet. I'm getting excited!!!

    Sounds like it!!

Yayy!! Alright this is great!! :D

So I guess this is the real flag leaf? This banana is tricking me now lol!

Yep that's it!! The flower will come out next.

    Okay that's great!!!!

Hey any updates? did the flower come out yet?

    Hi,

Not quite yet. I can't really tell. I have something like looks like a tiny leaf just poking out now.

I just checked on it. I think it kooks like the flower is coming out. The petiole of the flag leaf looks very full and it looks like its splitting open where i have the arrow.

    Wohhoooooo!!!!

    Yayyyy!

This just popped out when I checked up this morning!!!

I'm going to be away until sunday night. This makes me want to stay home! I'll be having someone watering my bananas. Can't wait to come back and see how it looks!

It will be a nice surprise to see the progress. Enjoy the weekend!

I know it’s been two years but would love to hear an update. Did you get fruit? Mine flowered and fruited for the first time this year. And I’m in Oregon!

    sorry, photo is importing sideways

It's more rewarding growing an edible type. Those basjoos grow all over west coast Vancouver area like weeds. That DO was in the ground so cold would have taken it out in Nov that year.

Sorry to revive an old thread but we just bought a house with banana trees over the winter. They are ginormous right now but I still dont see any of them flowering. Could mine be a non flowering type? They are growing everywhere on this property. Maybe like 7 or 8 different groups/areas. Any advice is welcomed!

    Hi there!

Congrats on the new banana plants! From your description, it sounds like you might have a variety from the red banana group (such as *Ensete ventricosum* or *Musa* 'Red Dacca'), though it's hard to tell for sure without seeing pictures. The reddish hue on the underside of the midrib is a common trait in some red banana varieties, but it can also occur in certain hybrids.

One way to narrow it down is to check the size of the plant, the shape of the leaves, and if you notice any other color variations as it matures. Since you've grown Dwarf Cavendish and Musa Basjoo, you probably have an eye for those differences. If possible, you might want to upload a few pictures here so the community can help with the ID.

Also, keep an eye on the new growth. If the red hue deepens or becomes more distinct, that could help in identifying the plant as well.

Good luck, and I hope you get some tasty bananas out of it! 😊
