Creating drainage for MUD

May 19, 2018

This space under our deck stairs keeps washing mud onto our brick path that leads to the screen porch/basement door. On the other side is a cross tie retaining wall. Is the best option just to dig up all the mud and put gravel in? What type of rock? Should I put down landscping fabric too? Thanks!!

You would either have to build some sort of retaining wall or curb so that the mud doesn't wash out, or like you said remove the mud and replace with gravel.

If you're going to replace with gravel, you should excavate the soil down below the grade of the pathway. Then put down landscape fabric and pin down with sod staples. Top with clear gravel or a decorative gravel like riverstone or crushed granite if it's going to be seen.

    Good Luck!
