I kind of dread the summer heat because everything that looks so fabulous in the Spring and fall just gets crispy in the summer especially their caretaker me

    The lilies seem crisp-proof!

I just deadheaded a ton of ugly waterlogged blooms...lol...Alot more than I thought got ruined...Going to rain tonight again... We can't do anything about mother nature...lol....Or I would try...lol

I think I see Rose Midge damage starting out front... Rained so much I'm not sure though...

I always complain about my cold zone but I guess growing roses in a very warm zone isn’t a picnic either.

We all have our challenges jjpeace... Raining here today but what's new...lol...

100 degrees Cori Ann! Gee! Sorry to hear roses are crisping...Wish I could ship you some rain Cori Ann! I would if I could but mamma nature does her own thing...

I've noticed a decline in attendance... I miss everyones photos and discussions! Nanadoll, Carol, what's going on your ways?

By the way... LOL....How the he** do you find other forums on houzz now? lol....

The earwigs don't bother the roses although they're irritating but they have devoured my zinnias and they look just terrible. I read that if you put cantaloupe rinds out it will attract the earwigs. Well what a crock that is. I put rinds out all over the place I got some ants but not an ear wig . How could it even work? I'm lucky it just didn't attract rodents and raccoons back to the diatomatious Earth

I would personally rather have 100 degree crispy weather than freezing temps.... but I’m only OK with either of those when we have AC and a heater! AC will finally be fixed today hopefully.

If people do go to a different forum I hope you still come back and say hello to me every now and then. :-)

I’m staying with Houzz and Gardenweb. I actually found Gardenweb while looking at articles and lookbooks in Houzz for our remodel. I like the articles and ideas on Houzz. I don’t mind the recent update either, but I know others are having problems and totally understand how frustrating that must be. If you leave... come back every now and then to say hello to me! :-)

I find earwigs here in rose blooms (sometimes 7+ in one bloom) but I think they might be eating bad insects too... Not sure about that though...lol....Sorry your zinnias are getting devoured...I'll have to keep an eye out and see if they eat our zinnias...

Wondering Kristine, is there water in your rose blooms? We get alot of rain and the earwigs love the wetness in the blooms... So just wondering????

Cori Ann, I'm just trying to find other forums on gardenweb/houzz...Like organic rose forum, annuals forum... etc. I can't navigate to find them anymore like I once could...Am I missing something????

Jim I have tons of earwigs and no water... so I don’t think that’s all it is. They do eat bad bugs too. That’s why I leave em. :-)

.Ok Cori Ann, just was wondering about Earwigs...

    Antique rose forum is below:

    [https://www.houzz.com/discussions/antique-roses-forum-dsbr0-bd~t_29817[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/antique-roses-forum-dsbr0-bd~t_29817-forum-dsbr0-bd~t_29817)

    Found this on earwigs:

    EARWIGS:

"Unfortunately for the earwig, its ferocious looking pincers contribute
to a reputation far worse than deserved. Earwigs don’t attack people and they aren’t
inclined to crawl into peoples’ ears. They do enjoy munching on tender, new plant
growth and may chew around the edges of older leaves and on soft fruit like strawberries.
If you grow artichokes, you are familiar with earwigs lurking in the leaves.
On the other hand, earwigs eat aphids, mites, dead leaf matter, and dead insects. They’re
useful garden predators and one of nature’s housekeepers. "

Let me see if maybe this visual helps you and a few others Jim. To find the other forums, you just have to get there a different way than before. And once you set up the forums you're interested in, it's actually easier and more personalized that it used to be. I usually use my iPhone, but I'm using my computer this morning to see if this helps anyone. I selfishly want everyone to stay here on Houzz because you're all my rose friends and I would miss you if you went somewhere else! Hopefully this helps.

Here's a screen shot of what it looks like from a computer. Click on "Stories & Advice," then click on "Gardenweb Discussions." At my computer it looks like this..

Then on the left you will see a smaller rectangle where you can edit "Your Topics." Click on the green "Edit" in that rectangle on the left side. At my computer it looks like this (please note I already have my topics set up so this may look a little different from yours if you haven't set them up yet)

Then this box should come up. You can choose the topics/forums you are interested in.

Then your main page will be personalized so you can see all the latest posts from each forum you follow. After than, you can see your personalized topics page whenever you click on "Stories & Advice," then "Gardenweb." It's actually a very nice feature, in my opinion. I hope this helps!!! :-)

That said, Houzz does need to fix problems some people are having, like Sheila's name showing up as "joealvord" when I view it from my iPhone or iPad on safari, but showing up as her regular name when I see her here on my computer. And how some people are having photo loading problems (although we did experience that before quite a bit on this thread, even with the old format).

Im updating myself further on this thread.

What a cute dog photo with the treadmill, CoriAnn. I saw your pic of melons, are they really going to grow into real melons? Dumb question, but need to ask. And when are you expecting them?

Lyannastarknolla, nice photos. And very graceful cat indeed. :)

SJN, also nice photos, do you have any pink, red or orange Hibiscus?

JJPeace, sorry to hear about your garden issues. Hopefully next year will be better.

I should have chanterais melons in about 2 to 3 months. :-)

Some more roses in bloom here:

What's going on your way Nanadoll? Been cold here had to break out winter blanket the other night...hit down in the upper 40's....

Carol? Has it warmed up yet your way?

I have the two Bloomstruck out front and a D Ko in the middle...lol...But last year the D.Ko had a great first flush but hardly any blooms afterwards.. (Rose Midge) Waiting to see what happens this year... I might have to replace D.Ko with a non rose shrub for out front...If the RM problem continues...

Thank you all for your lovely blooms and updates on your lives. I second Cori Ann's plea to stick around, my lovely rose friends! I will figure out the new system when I get home.

Jim - I'm so sorry to hear of yet another loss and hardship for your family. Also glad to see you can maintain a sense of humor, a propensity for fun, and a desire to create life and beauty in your environment. Keep on keeping on.

Svetlana - I could say the same for you. Blessings on you as you strive to do what is best and right for your little friend as well as for yourself.

For those of you in pain and yet gardening in spite / despite the pain -- I wish you only the best!

Henrik -- gorgeous flowers! Thank you.

Cori Ann -- your crispies are making me wonder what I will come home to...hopefully the tomato plants are still going strong. If the roses have entered the summer phase, I can cope. But my other stuff better not be suffering or I will have to make my stern face and sigh of disappointment with hubby.

Kristine -- hope you get the earwigs under control. I do NOT like pincher bugs! Your melon solution SOUNDED good -- but I'm glad you didn't get worse critters!

Fragrance - will you make bird feeders or some kind of decorations out of your gourds? I've seen some amazing gourds!

Cori Ann - I just noticed that instead of your usual description of your zone and peaches, there is a tag line that says, "HOuzz violated my privacy" - have you been hacked?

Hi Jim, the thread truant is back. In spite of your insect problems, I think you're having a good year. Though the rain soaking your beautiful pink rose, Earthsong was not good. That was awful. Has this rose recovered? I'm so sorry about you brother in law. But glad your mom is progressing well. I have a few hundred unorganized photos from this spring to post--I promise not to inflict all of them on you. And I will parcel them out. Lots need to be discarded, too. It's going to be 90F today, so cold is not a problem, but the daily wind is. I've had lots of rose and snapdragon damage from it.

Henrik, I'm so glad to see you posting your beautiful roses--they are so unusual, and make me wish the roses that are available to us had a little more originality sometimes. I love Emelian Guillot with its cutting edge color and ruffles. Diablesse de Mers, is my favorite of all.

Cori Ann, I think a melon stand out in front of your house might be a good idea. Those seedlings will eventually need acres for their vines, so who needs roses? Get the plow out and do some plowing under. I will happily relieve you of your Peach Swirls and Chrysler Imperial roses. The melons will finance the rest of your grad school...and we could all have a melon party at your house. I attended a little tea party/lunch at my gardening friend's home yesterday. We sat amidst flower beds and hanging baskets, as well as myriad hummingbird feeders. So the jabbering of the h-birds accompanied our jabbering. My favorite food, as always was cuke sandwiches. The cayenne pepper gives them some kick. My friend's garden is beyond belief. She built a tunnel/pergola that is currently covered with the new variant of Jackmanii clematis. I think it's called Jack. When the clems die down the morning glories will cover the Jacks, and there will be purple mglories to see. The tunnel has its visual focus on a triple fountain just past its end. What a feast of delphs, larkspur, roses, and countless other flowers we beheld. I think my favorite roses were Sally Holmes and a hedge of Nearly wild. Her Edens and Mother of Pearl were close seconds, but there were so very many. Friend is 72 and as big a workaholic as you are!

I'm enjoying eveyone's photos and comments. Kristine, I hope your eye problem has settled (I've had my share of those). Could you weed while crawling on your knees? That's what I do, and there is less head pressure for me that way. I love your Memphis Music/Magic. It reminds me of that crazy rose, Simsalabim..... Sultry, those Buddhah's fingers were sort of weird. They began to look like witches' fingers as they matured. You have really got the interesting plants..... Reese, I love your kitty (like my long gone kitty, Peanut Butter), and everything you are doing to your front flower beds and path looks wonderful. Trish, the book, 84, Charing Cross Road was a great, but short read--yes, I got it and read it already. So, that's what I sound like, eh?

Must go, but I'll be back with more pics than you'll ever want to view. Diane

I will attempt the posting of photos with a bad internet connection, bad eyesight, and bad posture in a hotel room in the British Midlands (where I spent 6 hours in an archive, and another two hours running around looking at churches). I will be tired tomorrow, but hopefully I will sleep on the plane.

Without further adieu - here are some photos from the official David Austin Rose Gardens on Bowling Green Lane in Albrighton, Shropshire, England!

I think I recall someone saying they loved Sceptered Isle. Sorry if I got it wrong. I tried to access Houzz from the rose garden, but my int'l internet is almost as bad as having nothing, and with my phone and our prolific discussions, it hid most of the entries from me...

WOW Deborah! Those are some fine photos! :-)

Nanadoll, only roses under bad insect attack are potted Fiji and our two other smaller roses and I put a stop to that...lol...Insects probably appear worse cause those rose bushes are so small...lol....

Rose midge? Not sure how there going effect things yet...

Earthsong is doing good... I cut off the bad weathered blooms and he has more buds to share soon...He still has some blooms on the bush that look decent... I can't control our weather so I just have to live with it...Of course I could build a glass dome over the yard...lol

Can't wait to see your photos Nanadoll... A rosy explosion...:-)

Oh dear. I can't see any photo after Deborah's Ferdinand Pichard.

Haha before I read what Debora wrote I assumed by her pictures that was her private garden. And I was in paralyzed for few seconds then I read it was a DA ‘ garden. Lol Very beautiful, magnificent to be more precise.

Jim, I'm sorry to hear about your brother-in-law. That must have been a hard decision. I take it, this is another sister? Your roses are mostly looking great despite the deluges.

Henrik, I love all your roses. They're so sumptuous looking. I'd love to see a photo or two of your whole garden.

Cori Ann, those crispy roses...…. What a shame. But great that the lilies can take it.

Deborah, thanks for the photos. Spectacular. Though I couldn't see all of them. I love the photo of Garden Beauty, and I think I would have to have Tottering-by-Gently just for the name. I'm not a great fan of singles either, though that one looks very pretty. I do love Diane's Morden Sunrise though, and Marlorena's Lark Ascending, though that may be more of a double. The only singles I have are Scabrosa and Mutabilis, and the bees certainly love Scabrosa.

Diane, great to 'hear' from you. Yes, it is short. I gather it didn't have the Duchess of Bloomsbury Street tacked on to it? I wouldn't say she sounds like you all the time, but at certain points she sure did! Ironic humour!

Kristine, sorry to hear about your eye problem. What a nuisance.

Look at this fat little muncher I found eating up Lady of Shalott! Darn it, he is gonna be a beautiful Giant Polyphemus Silk Moth when he grows up so I'm just gonna let him enjoy it. After all how much bigger can he get before he cocoons lol!!

Hmmm do you think the buds are in danger of being devoured?

Jim, how are your roses doing in all the rain?

Kristine, have you peace in your home now, is your construction done?

My roses are growing extremely slow, barely at all. First out blooming will be one of the dahlias, then probably yellow Hansestadt Rostock and then (only 1 bud) the rose called Myvetta. Im not as excited about the roses since i dont see much progress. My pup had a rough day today, i must of harmed him in some way when i was filing down his paw pads last night. He´s been limping on a paw since then, gave him Gabapentin & Tramadol that somewhat helped.

Watched the video but wont be using the cutting for rooting, too much work. And most of the cutting would need to be cut of so. Oh and I got a refund on the two roses when i emailed the company about the aphids, poor roots (well at least i thought they were bad) and wrong colour. So i basically got them for free, thats nice. I was going to keep the wrong coloured rose anyway (Princess Alexandra Renaissance), googled it and liked the pics.

Svetlana, I am beginning to think that this remodel will go on and on. They have actually made great progress and should be done next week. I should be glad that they are doing such a wonderful job. I love that the neighbors slow down to check it out.

Deborah, oh how I envy your adventure. How incredible!

Here is my first Lady of Shallot. It will go out front.

Is anybody else missing photos? Still have nothing since Deborah's Ferdinand Pichard. There are missing photos after FP. a second post from Deborah, Jim's Earthsong, Sultry's fat little muncher, and Kristine's Lady of Shallot - all invisible.

I cant see the latest pics either. Time to start a new thread?

Kristine, that sounds good. Having construction at home would drive me crazy, especially since i have social anxiety. I would be hiding in my room. lol

I´m going to take a shorter break from the forum, see ya, hopefully there will be people left here.

Major thunderstorm clouds are brewing...winds are picking up and rain is falling...

Yes my pics are missing too! Oh were getting tornado warnings...LATER for now!

Like Svetlana says, probably time to start a new thread. On the bright side, Houzz hasn't changed everything. :-)

I'm not seeing any photos after Ferdinand, either. But this lack of photos showing up may be connected to other Houzz issues currently going on. Perhaps, we should wait till tomorrow before making a decision about starting a new thread?

Jim, tornadoes?? Are you in Kansas now? I'm surprised any of us can get a rose to bloom in all the awful weather.

Kristine, I think your remodel has been at warp speed. Our neighbors have been remodeling for two years. If I ever hear another circular saw, it will be too soon. These people are perfectionists, and are spending money like crazy.

Trish, I didn't get the Duchess, but I'll try again. What have you been reading lately? I've sent books to flowersaremusic in the past year. We share similar tastes in books, and what a sweet person she is. I wish her the best with her beautiful kitty, Daisy, whose photo has appeared on these threads. She's having some health problems. I just finished the latest Maisie Dobbs book, and it will be a while before the next one comes out. Meanwhile, I must get on with "The Dry" which sounds intriguing.

Deborah, I love those photos you posted--I hope the rest of them appear for us soon. Your adventures are envy inducing. Fly home safely to a garden that's in great shape. Diane

Jim - I'm here, checking in. I was checking out another rose forum that Jeri and Witchy went to, cause I hate this new improved Houzz. I can't even search on a subject without it including stuff from all of the other Houzz places. I've joined it a few hours ago...but I really love the people here...so I'm torn. Too bad you have soggy flowers...you've been having such wonderful rose blooms...hope that comes back. :)

Deborah - I can't see the 2nd batch of photos...but the one with Ferdinand P. has wonderful roses...especially Sceptr'd Isle - oh my goodnesss!!!!

Sultry - can't see your photos. Houzz sucks.

I lost a post where I responded to everyone's comments.

I was going to post some pictures...but figured why bothered...they won't show up.

    Carol

Trish, I just ordered The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street. You have started me on another book addiction. I'm going to send a bunch of books down to Australia as revenge. My shelf space is long gone. I also have no more space for roses. When will it end? Diane

Oh Deb, your photos are spectacular. It reminded me of this time last year when I was at the Chelsea flower show. DA (and his team) really know how to grow roses to perfection!

I can't see anyones pics anymore Cori Ann.... Others having same problem...Maybe start a finale Spring thread then next week I'll start a NEW Summer thread....???? Up to you...lol..What date does summer start? 21st?

Only seen 1 tornado here in our direct local area Nanadoll in 57 years... 1990's... It tore a block of trees out just 2 blocks from our house...We went into the cellar that day...

Our potted Fiji blooms stink...lol...I think our climate is just not right for many petaled rose blooms...Blooms need to open fairly quick here or rain makes them look bad before they get open.. I've even been keeping potted Fiji on the back porch out of rain...So slow to open in our cooler weather that it rotted...I'm guessing Plum Perfect will do the same...Guess I need to face it....lol...Next year I think I'll remove the in the ground Fiji...Then buy a new rose bush to go into its location..I'll still have potted Fiji...And I'll give Plum Perfect more time in the ground...If PP fails I'll pot him up too...lol

Posting a pic can anyone see it????

    I see your picture Jim

How frustrating for you regarding your poor Fijis. Darn it anyway.

Diane, we have kind of been on the remodel for almost 4 years. The reason why we got a good deal on this house is because the exterior was such a wreak. Mostly backyard up to this point. We finally decided to hire someone and get this done. Good grief, enough already. I still have a lot of painting to do though.

Carol, yes. I have been weeding smarter.

I decided to give up my tour guide job due to my worsening eyesight. Driving the bus lol, Could be more like Mr. Toads wild ride .For that experience I would have to up the price . I will still be working in the store where I can bumble around and no one will care.

Sorry about your declining eyesight Kristine....But yes a wild ride for sure...lol....I experience tunnel vision so I rarely drive anymore...I'd be driving the bus right through the tunnel...lol

I still don't see any photos after "Ferdinand", and that includes yours, Jim. Houzz seems to be getting cheaper and cheaper with the photo allotment for each thread. I'll be happy with whatever we all decide to do regarding the new summer thread. What do you want to do, Cori Ann?.....Meanwhile, I will not go on any Pink Party Bus rides with Jim as the driver (or me as the driver, either. Especially at night). Diane
