Midcentury Modern Exterior

Help! We are planning to do some outdoor remodeling (without building an addition).I don’t like the look of the outside of our house right now and want to make it look more midcentury modern. We getting the roof done and need to figure out a color, we plan on purchasing a new front door (and need to figure out a color), we want to change up landscaping, change the color of the house (the wood part - not the stone), add planters and exterior decor, possibly a small sitting area (either a “modern” bench or two chairs with table) and we are open to adding flower boxes and/or shutters. I’m just having trouble putting it all together so it flows and coordinates well. Any help is appreciated!!

What color is the siding? Its hard to see. Are you keeping that or are you painting it, too?

Wood touches would be lovely on your home. Door and siding if you can afford it, door if not and then pick a color from the stone for the siding.

A Charcoal roof color is versatile.

Make a landscaping plan after the remodel is finished. No shutters please.

Keep the siding gray and paint all the window frames gray alwo. Select a natural wood door for the entrance.

Love all of these so far!! Thank you THANK YOU! Hard to see in the original pictures due to bad lighting, but the siding is wood and is painted a royal blue right now.

A color door would also be fun.

I actually like the dark siding, you could do more of a warmer, charcoal gray instead of that blue tone.. but the dark is very mcm. you need to paint the trim dark too,,,the trim along the roof eave and around the windows should also be dark.

if you did a metal roof, or dark gray, got a door like was mentioned, followed what Beverly stated, I think it would look great. Landscape will make a huge difference in how the house presents itself as mcm. I would hire a landscape designer for that one.

Hi, recommend you to repaint your siding to brown, dark oak or dark grey (dark grey close to black will be best IMO). And make an accent on your front door with bright color as turquoise, yellow, aqua, green or orange or use front door with wooden texture.

Replace the siding with cedar and paint the trim charcoal. Add a cedar fence on the opposite side of the house for balance (keeping the boards horizontal) and make an enclosed courtyard for the entry. Any of the above doors would work with the theme. Paint it a bright color to make it pop. If the budget allows, you could add a covering over the porch, or even expand it a little. Definitely consult with a landscaper for the yard. Good luck.

These are AMAZING! I’m really loving these ideas - so talented!! Being able to picture different things and seeing other people’s take on the house is so helpful. These make me even more excited to show this exterior some TLC!

    Nice house and yard.

No addition to the house ... meaning no new rooms?

Since you're redoing the roof, it occurs to me that you might consider this is a mid century modern porch -- since it's only a flat roof with posts, it's likely cheaper to build as a DIY project than buying some new front doors or having professional landscaping done:

For curb appeal, that contorted gutter downspout could use some attention so it doesn't get attention.

Painting the part of it that is in front of the siding the same color as the siding could help.

Adding a planter with a lattice screen with ivy that will stay green year round to hide that part of the downspout that is below the bend could as well.

There are flexible pipes, both solid and with holes in them -- that can attach to the bottom of a downspout with a fitting designed for that purpose.

A short solid pipe gets the water under ground and it can lead to a pop up fitting that enables the water to exit the pipe where you want

or the pipe with holes can be buried in a ditch of gravel so the water so the water is moved away from the foundation of house and disburses much as a septic tank drain line would and waters the lawn and/or exists where you need it to put the water.

If your yard were small, there are "Y" fittings to enable you to drain the water in two different directions.

I would choose charcoal for the roofing color.

I love these suggestions. I’ve gotten further along in the decision process with your idea, pictures, and suggestions than I have in the 1.5 years living here so far! I’m leaning towards re-painting the wood siding a charcoal color, adding a dark brown mid century-style door, blending that dang gutter into the siding more (with same color paint), some of the awesome landscaping suggested, etc. We’re thinking of pricing out a porch too. Question, would I make the roof match the color of the charcoal siding, similar to the pictures below?
