You could go 100 different directions, from lots of color to minimal color. Besides looking at photos on Houzz, Pintrest offers a lot of ideas for rooms with grey walls and dark wood floors.

We recently bought a small cottage in another town and just moved in phase one.It has light grey walls and medium dark wood floors. Grey/black/white counter tops. We wanted to see how things fit in before we add a coffee table, entertainment center, end tables, lamps, etc. It's not a very big place, just under 1600 sf and a second home for us.

Our color pallet for this house, is natural linen, browns, greys, and we will add in come black, and colors. The coffee table will likely be grey and I am putting a collage of old photos, advertisements, and other art on the top. It will be colorful,

Here is what we have done so far. Hope it helps.

    Your house is beautiful.

This was taken about 11pm and the lighting is terrible. There is a contractor grade boob light in the entry that casts yellow and over head is a cheap ceiling fan globe light. Sofa's are light beige linen and pillows are dark charcoal and patten is charcoal, chocolate and tan. Chairs are light beige linen and chocolate. Rug is natural fiber rug.

Daytime now and boob light is still yellow cast. That will go eventually. Anyhow, entry rug is natural fiber, then dark table. Entertainment center we are considering white bookcases. You can just see the edge of the kitchen island to the right. The cabinets are white.

Now enought light is coming in and we turned off the yellow entry light. Natural fiber rug between island and stove.

That's all we have done so far. The two bedrooms upstairs have beds and linens and the bathroom is done. Our master is getting this wood on Tuesday (taking out the Puce color carpet). The bed is black. Will likely do some rug under is or runners. This is a photoshop pic I did of the bed and inserted it into a photo of our room with our exact pillows I bought. Coverlet shown is on the photo but ours is grey.

Successful rooms, comfortable rooms, beautiful and functional rooms begin ON PAPER. They do not begin with a trip to the store or the sofa site online....or even the color of that sofa.

They begin with a to scale drawing of the actual room in 1/4 inch to a foot. That includes, all windows, and other openings. With furniture templates in same scale. How do you want to sit ? How many folks? Where will the tv go? Will there be a rug? What size would be best? What about a coffee table , lamps, etc. Rooms begin with a plan.

In the best scenario, this is with a designer who provides a plan,, and options, after you have very fully explained the feel you want in your home. .......and what you can spend to achieve the feel, and function you desire. : )

Beautiful room, Jennifer! I love your white and grey.

We weren't sure what color theme we were going for with this house until we started browsing the furniture stores we were interested in purchasing from. We chose this sofa and love seat to start along with the chairs and built from there.

Lesley, because our cottage is open concept and not very large, I was very worried about what would fit in the space. With windows high up on the wall in the master bedroom, I needed to keep this in mind when choosing a bed. I used an online floor planner, floorplanner.com and drew my rooms to scale, complete with windows, doors, ceiling measurements, etc. You can add types of flooring and colors of, as well as wall colors and all kinds of furnishings and scale the pieces to exact size, by 1/8 of inch. You can't change their color but there are gazillions of options to choose from to achieve your look. You design in 2D and can then view in 3D.

I also made story boards of each room, downloading a photo of each piece we were purchasing, all the way down to the pillows on the master bed. It really helped to visualize each piece fitting with each other. This is my master final story board. I made a few using different pillows and coverlet colors. This is all we have purchased for our room thus far. Night stands next with lamps.

When I wasn't sure, I used Pintrest a lot of examples of rooms with a look I had in mind that I could copy or inspire me.

Start with either a rug or curtains for this room. These will dictate the color of your sofa and other furniture. Avoid adding still more gray - you need some color in this room.

Before any color is a P.l.a.n.

There are seven thousand threads here where someone shopped without one. They are all omg "what do I do NOW ?" threads.
