Bathroom Tile Advice on Small Budget

last modified: 7 years ago

I have a 5x8 bathroom with a 60x30 kohler underscore alcove tub, and no window. Please pick my tiles...not from 10k houzz or pinterest photos that don't link you to the tile. I want links to tiles I can buy (or go in a store and buy). I...just...can't...do it. FYI I want a wide niche on the back wall and I have a small budget, I decided I will do porcelain and I want minimal grout lines in order to make maintenance easy... and if I look at any more tiles my brain will explode. That's all I know. Hit me with photos of your bathrooms and suggestions. If you got tile cheap at Lowes or Home Despot even better. Thanks!

I am using plain white subway 3x6 tiles for the walls, and retro rounds cobalt blue penny rounds from Daltile in the niche for my kids’ bath. Schluter trim. Pretty cheap! They have not tiled yet so no pictures. Here are some examples using two different color subway and one with a stripe of penny rounds. You can buy both at HomeDepot or Lowe’s.

There's a million photos out there, pick a couple you like for the looks and visit a couple of tile showrooms that can walk you through with what's needed. It's not really something you can select on screen. There are great options at all price points.

If you want budget, don’t do tile. It’s a premium choice. The labor to install $1 tile is almost exactly the labor to install $50 tile. And labor is the biggest component in tile work b cause it is a skilled trade. Or should be. The difference between a $4600 job and a $5100 job shouldn’t be the difference in whether you do the job. If it is, then you don’t have enough reserve funding to see you through if you have issues. You’re too close to the bone.

Do an acrylic surround with corner shelves if you want budget.

If you do decide that the premium of tile is worth it, then hire wisely. Cheap hacks who don’t waterproof or aren’t really tile guys are everywhere.

Wish I lived near a floor and decor! Sigh.

Are 12x24 tiles too big for a 60x30 shower? I hate grout lines, bigger tile in means less grout!

for the floors or walls? you can't go more than 4 by 4 tiles on the shower floor, unless you do a linear drain(I hope I'm not mistaken in how it's called)

also always be sure to check whether flooring tile is approved for wet spaces..you don't want tile that's too slippery. Many people make that mistake, unfortunately

What colors you want? It's really hard to recommend specific tiles without knowing more about your style and preferences/your house's style. Big tile of same color=more contemporary, modern look

I know that Daltile and Merola(sold also in Home Depot, not all available on the floor) get good reviews while being very affordable

(and yes, 12 by 24 would be too big I believe..if one side is 30 inch, you have one tile plus just a bit of another tile..one needs a great installer to make that work, and I'm not even sure that'd be enough since some things are just too challenging to get right, regardless of skills)

This is for a tub surround wall. There's no shower floor.

Your walls would need to be 100% perfect to use tile that size. No small variations anywhere. It's about the most unforgiving wall choice there is.

If you want "minimum grout lines" that means BIG tiles, which means EXTRA expense on wall prep and installation.
