I happen to love deep purples and lavenders for a master bedroom. I would avoid shiny fabric, though. If you want a bit more glam for the room, add metallic accents and cushy seating.

I'm 73 and I agree with Threers. In addition, purple is definitely not childish.

No, you're not on the right track. I don't know about being "too" childish, purple is just not a color that you're going win with if you're not someone with some real decorating sense, which I am guessing you are not. Sure, I'm sure people on here can show pictures from the internet of professionally decorated rooms using purple, but trust me ... your room will not end up looking like that. You're much better off sticking to more neutral colors. With pinks and purples you are off to a very rocky start that I highly doubt will end well. If you feel you have to have some purple, then just use it more sparingly and way more toned down like a smoky purple than shows as gray (but not in a shiny material). Or get someone to help you before you spend any money.

You started with purple tint and then went over to purple completely. It's dark.

Shiny silk can work in the bedroom but requires careful handling. That bedding above looks cheap and has sent you down the wrong path. Nothing wrong with purple accents in the room to create an ambiance like art, pillows & accessories.

Here is a gray and blush combination that is sophisticated and gender neutral.

Was said? the bedspread has a greyed lavender....too bright purple walls with it. This talks of that in a houzz article:

You might use this color called Organdy....deep, pretty flowers, and you could buy that color in lamp, etc...

In other words, I'd skip pattern matching, etc.... go with basic paint and love your accessories.

Claire, don't let these folks discourage you. You absolutely can do purple. I suggest you start with a purple ideabook where you save all your favorite purple bedrooms, then try to copy one. You can be pretty safe if you follow the 60/30/10 rule: 60% neutral (which would include your bedding), 30% purple, 10% of an accent color, and be careful not to include wildly different styles; you should be fine.

In the room above, notice the bedding and rug are neutral, the wall is neutral with a purple undertone, headboard and shades are full on purple, and the yellow throw adds an extra bit of spice. Purple looks great with accents of yellow, gold, orange, and green. Go for it.

These are faux, in different neutrals. Maybe your fairly bright purple paint could work with this shade of grey [if good blend with bedding] -

Claire, I've seen that spread on Horchow. It's not cheap looking at all.

Try BM Raindrops on Roses. it's a lavender/gray. you need a subtle wall color w/your prints.

I love purple! We are building and will incorporate purple in our decor. I like your bedspread and don't think it looks cheap. I wouldn't do the blush color though. What about going with a crisp white paint on the walls.? Look at some of the new colors in furnishings. Seeing a lot of purple. When people respond just remember it is just their opinion. You will have to look at it everyday. Every time I've had an idea and someone poopoo's it and I change it, I'm always sorry.

I was really sorry to come across the "cheap" bedding comment. The impression perhaps came from your photos, in which you arranged the bedding on what looks like a card table on a cement patio. Also, the wallpaper and proposed paint colors did not quite bring out the inherit beauty of the bedding, which, of course, is the reason you're here. Do not be discouraged.

You've gotten a lot of wonderful advice on how to create a more subtle palette here. Keep your bedding, and explore how you can accentuate it.

Claire I like purple and if you want purple then you should have it. Is there a reason you do not want to hire a designer or color consultant? The Greek key fabric looks like a brown purple and the other is more of a blue purple and the bedding just looks gray to me.

The professionals here at Houzz have often said only one element in a room can be the "star" I would let the bedding be the star since I like it.

I love the look of Raindrops on Roses. Although with that, and the luxurious bedding, I would probably still use purple elsewhere in the room. It just seems to have the right feeling -- "rich" is the word Saratoga used. I was searching for the right word to describe the kind of room that bedding requires, and "rich" is it.

I love your choices but think the Organdy or Raindrops colors would be wonderful too. Another consideration: the size of the room and the windows (size and orientation to the sun) will also make a difference, as will your lighting choices.

Claire although your choices are not my style, I certainly do not think they look cheap what so ever. Elegant and classy! I do think your purple is a bit too bold. Once again I think Beth nailed it with her ideas for you. The dark floors and marble sounds enchanting and romantic to say the least! Don’t let the paint color steal the snow, your finishes and bedding will already do that for you!

Go for it, purple, blush and grey looks great. Get some great big art with a dark background and add some charcoal colour in pillow and throw. Very elegant 72 year old you are

I think the wall paper behind the bed is too busy with the bedding. I like the paint color Beth has chosen and I would paint all walls. I think you could find a better fabric for you upholstered chair and I think that pattern fights with the bedding. I would keep the bedding as the star and choose complimentary neutrals for fabric or wallpaper if you want pattern and texture.

Larri yes that is the bedding., Irene, I love all the paintings TY and Christine the room is very large and lots of large windows with white trim. I think I will go Monday and get sample paint of both Organdy and raindrops on roses. The bathroom has a french look with the vanities which are bow front black lacquer with thin legs And yes it was dark in my house yesterday so I took my photos on the paint table out at the pool in the bright sun hence the glare. Thank you Larri for posting that photo. OPs original photos are OUTSIDE! Is the bedroom outside? No. Seeing the actual product in the actual setting is so important. The bedding does look cheap and shiny in the bright sunlight! But it looks soft and elegant in the catalog. It will be fine with soft blush/purplish tones but all this is best done inside, bedding horizontal and paints vertical under the right lighting. Carpet should be layered under the bedding with a white backdrop behind the paints. It will become very clear what the right direction is. Good luck!

Ok I scanned up and saw other comments on the same track as mine...there are a few good paint suggestions above and if you assemble as I suggested w your other materials (dark days are good to view as well as bright sunny days)...again, it will start to fall into place! I think you have quite a few good suggestions to work with.

Thank you thinkdesignlive, the new home is in drywall stage so very hard to photograph there. I have large paint samples drywall squares of the white I am using in the living and dining sitting in the house but so hard without any of the furniture sitting around.

Anyone have any great ideas for the color of headboard I should get? All I know is I want a high tufted velvet headboard or bed. Thanks

I'd consider a grey tufted leather vs velvet headboard to contrast with the sheen of the duvet. I'd suggest using a bench at foot of bed vs footboard.

imhofan, I love that bed where did you find it. Maybe I can get a sample of the leather to make sure it doesn't clash as the gray in the bedspread is so strange (purple hue) which I didn't realize when I purchased.

Unfortunately the source on the headboard is not available. There are multiple manufacturers that can create similar. I recommend you bring your bedding and wallpaper you are considering to furniture store to compare w/leather samples. I will search for some vendors as starting point--but you will need to view the leather samples.
