Vinyl window color choice - Please share your thoughts.

last modified: 6 years ago

New construction. If you were to put vinyl windows in your home - what color would you select?? We are debating between beige and sandtone. Also, should same sash color be on interior as well as exterior of the window? Which color would be more practical and easier to match when choosing interior paint color and decorating? My decorating style is traditional to modern. Home will have 10' - 12' ceilings.

This was a harder decision than I expected!

It depends on the style of the home. Look at these projects and see if this helps you make a decision.

The sandstone may look pinkish and will limit the colors you can use with it, so compare carefully. The beige is a better choice of the two IMO but is somewhat “muddy” and will also limit your choices down the road if you ever want to change siding to a cleaner color. I prefer a white exterior windows and trim, but it depends on your siding color. My windows are white clad on the outside and wood on the inside so I can paint or stain. Mine are painted white, which I think is more versatile. Again, depends on your intended color scheme and style and whether you may want a change later on. Not a pro.

Neither. White. Or even black. ( outside) Skip all the "mud" in between

On the averages, beige is more popular in our region. Both are pretty mild.

White is really more versatile. Especially if you plan to sell sometime in their lifespan.

Even if you don’t - these colours will be more restrictive when it comes to decorating choices, more especially if you have any leanings towards modern. These lean towards a more traditional design choice and colour palette, in my opinion.

Neither of the colours you are looking at are popular around where I live and can tend to look dirty or muddy if you don’t get paint and exterior colours and tones right.

What colors are the other exterior finishes?

Bronze is the least limiting color - it's worth paying extra for.

Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts.! We have not picked out the brick yet, I wish I would have thought of going to building supply store to see if any of the brick choices go well with either color. Little short on time now. Windows are being ordered today. Here are some of the brick color considerations.

Not white. White vinyl windows are so bright they look "neon" and cheapen the look of the house. There are very few color schemes that work well with such as bright white. It will not work with the bricks you have chosen. You need to choose the brick first and then choose which color vinyl looks the best with it. Personally, I love back vinyl windows like your third inspiration photo. Do do a white or black interior, you do not want your interior decorating to forever be dictated by your window color.

Lori A, Bronze is quite popular here as well. However, the window guy discouraged me, said its a white sash window that goes through paint process and when scratched white will show through, especially on vinyl.

laurahahe, I agree with you. White wont look right.
Never thought such simple task could be so difficult.

    Which color ?

I would either do white or go dark, I would not try to do any color in between. I disagree with previous posts ... white does not look cheap, white looks clean, white appeals to most people because you can do whatever other colors you want with it, and white can go with brick houses.

@ cpaul1 White wood windows are beautiful but white vinyl windows are hard to work with. Alinamontgomery: From your photos it looks like sandstone works better however the best way to know for sure is to hold the samples up to the actual brick since the colors in pictures may be off.

Put a hold on ordering the windows or else you'll be left with the dilemma of choosing brick based on window trim.

I have a brick home with white, aluminum clad windows. Depending on the brick being used, white works very well. If I had to choose a color without knowing what color brick is being used......I'd go with black.

Today's better quality vinyl windows do not have the "bluish" tint that it sounds like was being referred to. The cheap stuff does, but the better lines are more of a painter's white. That may neither be here nor there if you don't like white, just don't let that be the reason.

Beyond that, I'd agree with the sentiments about the earth-tones as shown losing some ground in popularity lately. Lots of white, black, gray, and bronze these days, lots of contrast.

White windows are 1000 times more difficult to work with in terms of designing exterior color palettes than any other option.

Because everybody thinks "white goes with everything". It doesn't. So not only do I have to deal with extremely limiting white windows I also have to have a 20 minute conversation about the fact that the white windows that the client chose because "they go with everything" do not go with everything -- and why.

Only reason beige is a little bit easier is because it's obvious to most people that the options for color schemes is going to be limited so there's not a whole lot to talk about.

Black is better than white or beige but it too can be limiting - black windows basically will define the entire vibe of the house.

Bronze I can pull many different ways. I can pull it to work with a slate bluish-gray roof, I can pull it to work with a warmish driftwood gray roof, I can pull it to work with a brown or rusty orange roof. Classic, traditional, cottage-y, craftsman, modern, etc.

Everyone should buy bronze windows. This is my house circa 1994. Bronze windows.

I agree that bronze is easy to work with.

I am doing black (clad) because my house was originally spec'd for steel windows.

But bronze would be a huge misstep with one of the major styles of house built in my area which is essentially a form of Colonial Revival. So it depends upon the architectural style of the house as well. Your house is not Colonial Revival, so I would not worry about it. But on the East Coast /Atlantic Seaboard area no, not everyone should buy bronze windows.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to share your thoughts. My husband went to window supplier for a brief chat. The guy said, sold lots of white windows today. Although, white looks nice, I think in vinyl does not look most appealing, Window guy said sandtone by far outsells the beige. Hubby said the color actually looks lighter that what is shown in the picture. So sandtone it is. Bronze would have been my choice as well, but due to white showing through if scratched I went practical. Thank you all. Framing starts on Thursday, so many more things to select before the house is complete. It has been a fun experience, but a bit stressful in working through all the kinks.

Neither. What other choice do you have?

Sandstone seems like it will be closes to the mortar color of your brick so is probably the safest bet if you can’t do bronze.

A no color subtle option; beige, bronze, black.
