Need advice to update curb appeal of old house!

Hello. I’m looking for any suggestions or advice to update the exterior of our new to us home. It was built in the 80’s and isn’t in bad shape. However, we find the exterior dark and unappealing. We love the front porch and would love to have this space look more inviting.

We are open to painting the brown porch, garage door and front door. The front door will be replaced next Spring, so for now a paint color will have to do! We may also replace the evestrophing next year as well.

Any friendly advice on how to give this house a facelift would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you in advance. ☺️

What's dark? Too much shade? Or the paint? If it's the paint, I'd advice picking a shade of cream that works with your siding and painting the brown stuff. You might get more light on the porch with just painting the ceiling white, light blue or cream.

If it's the shade, you could, over a few years, remove some of the lower branches of the tree.

A bigger, brighter welcome mat would help. One that is the width of the door. Flanking the door with pots with some kind of dry grass might help, too.

And, of course, if it's dim at dusk, put in porch lights.

Thanks for the advice. It is the paint color (brown) that we don’t like as it is so dark.

I like the brown because it goes well with the brick. A very common problem on Houzz seems to be houses that were repainted/resided with a color that was popular a few decades ago, and now are a color that is neither popular nor coherent with the rest of the exterior. Painting the porch ceiling a lighter color may be a workable compromise. I'd also think about painting the garage door that same brown.

It would help make the porch more inviting if it had porch furniture, and possibly a nice carpet.

What about painting the porch railing, column, trim around the front door, and porch ceiling white/ivory to brighten it up and then paint the front door a fun contrast color like blue or red? It would be a bold move, but would certainly brighten the entryway up significantly. Maybe add some planter boxes on the railing with some brightly colored flowers. When you are ready to change out your front door, I think a wrought iron door or craftsman style wood door with stained glass windows would look incredible. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! We have stained glass doors now and hate everything about them! I don’t know if it is just the style of these particular ones maybe? We want to keep some light in the entryway, so we will probably go with doors that have a window. I do like the craftsman type of door.

We definitely need to paint the brown a lighter colour. I like the blue door idea - like a nice deep navy maybe?

That is a nice sized tree. I would hesitate to remove it unless it presents a safety threat. You say you love the porch. Have you considered how much hotter the front of the house will be if the tree is removed? I would paint the front trim in lighter colors to see if that works for you.
