It's not likely quartz, that is the man-made stuff (vs. quartzite). Quartz has a more regular pattern generally speaking. Aside from that, I don't think you can tell from a photo. It looks like granite to me, but I wouldn't stake my life on it.

Thanks, Karin! I should have clarified that around here, you’ll see Super White classified as either a marble or a quartzite depending on the showroom. I’ve had clients use it with no problems and I had a client who complained of etching with it. So this particular one makes me nervous to recommend for a kitchen.

Yeah not a granite, and definitely not a quartz. It's marble - Super White probably. The yard might try to pass it off as a quartzite. But I do think more yards are getting a little better about this recently - I have noticed this the last few times I have visited them.

It looks like marble, but more than likely it is quartzite (similar to marble.) Especially since it is stored outside. Quartz is not good out in the elements. Be careful if you are choosing it for your kitchen. Quartzite and marble will scratch and etch. Unless you are not much of a cook and the kitchen is more ornamental, I would choose quartz or granite.

Precision-Tops, LLC You could do some better research and more specifically word your recommendations. A quartzite like Taj Mahal will not scratch or etch. It's harder than granite. The pictured slab has to be tested to see if it will scratch glass and if it'll stain or etch in person.

@dan1888 There are exceptions to every rule, of course. I was speaking in generalities. We were not talking about Taj Mahal or I would have mentioned it's hardness. Putting it out there that quartzite (as a generalization) will be more likely to scratch or etch than quartz would make common sense to check it out. But, thanks.
