Suggestions for Prague

Dh and I will in Prague for 3 days before embarking on a river cruise. One day we will be with a local guide to see the "best-known treasures". Any suggestions for shopping, restaurants or must see. We are staying at the Prague Hilton. So looking forward to the trip, but rain, rain, rain is in the forcast. Any and all suggestions welcomed.

Here's what I wrote on another thread re prague:

Prague is wonderful. Make sure you know what tours your river cruise includes so you don't repeat. We like Rick Steve's books and it includes walking tours with descriptions that you can take on your own. One place we especially enjoyed because of its quiet and with the river reminded us a little of Venice was Kampa Island. Also the are lots of churches to see, but because of the atheism under the soviets, the churches instead are used for other things including concerts. We saw a fabulous one in St. Nicolas Church. We didn't get a chance to take a tour of the Jewish quarter, but those that did found it really good. Most likely you will see the clock and the powder tower and all the usual stuff. Paris street is fun as it looks a lot like paris and is loaded with designer stores. Lots to see and do there. You'll enjoy the cruise very much!

and: I don't like beer. But in Prague, I had dark beer and it was so delish...just the house beer wherever we went. I've tried to find it here but have been unable. It is the perfect accompaniment to all of the dishes with cabbage that are not to be missed.

Thanks Annie, we have Rick Steve's book so that's a start we also watch him on TV almost every night, but so far nothing on Prague I like your suggestions about Kampa Island and the churches. I am not a beer drinker but will definitely try the dark beer. :-))

We are going next week, but ending in Prague instead of starting there. We are staying an extra 2 days after the cruise ends. Will keep in mind the suggestions offered for Cran and will report back after our return.

Thanks Cran. We are doing Prague, Poland (krakow) and finishing in Munch. We are just hammering out preliminaries right now so this thread will be helpful.

Cran, same to you. We will be there the same time but going opposite directions on the river. I think there will be some thunderstorms early in the week. Have a great time. We can compare notes when we get back.

There are some interesting restored gardens on the hillside below the castle.
