Don't know much about snow down here! But we did have a relatively heavy, wet snow (by Atlanta standards) last winter, and while the snow toppled one of my cypresses, the Cryptomeria came out unscathed.

I agree, one leader is preferred. More than one and you will always have potential problems down the road. The longer you wait, the worse it gets. Very few trees can handle two leaders side by side to maturity, unless they don't get very big.
