Ideas on trim color for a white house - besides black or baby blue

I've recently moved into an older house. The body of the house is a basic, cool white and it doesn't require changing right now (nor does the budget permit it). I'm looking for trim color ideas. I do love a basic, crisp black but our climate can be dusty and I'm hoping to find another color that will bring out the house's cottage charm but not show every spec of dust that settles on the sills. The trim is currently a dusty baby blue which isn't especially attractive either. If I can't think of anything else, I'll probably end up with a charcoal grey and do something bright with the door. Any great ideas for other trim colors? In advance, thanks!

I'd consider a milk chocolate color trim then you can decide on a fun color for the door. Raisin, red, yellow, colbalt blue???

After looking around, the white on off white with a brown door would look cottagy cute. But, you'll need to uprgrade the lighting.

In the event you have a female-dominated household, would you consider the trim and porch ceiling in a soft pink? If you have a wood-tone door, you could keep the door color in a walnut tone to add a little contrast to the color scheme. I remember a house in my town that had beige limestone up to the windows and then white siding. To warm up the color scheme, the roof was done in rose-pink asphalt shingles. The doors were a light wood tone that blended somewhat with the limestone. The woman who lived there had royal blue gazing balls around the house and garden as an accent color. I always thought the rose-pink roof did a lot to add warmth to the beige and to serve as a contrast from the white siding.

Yeah. That home in Marco Island has absolutely nothing in common with the cottage in the great frozen North. Especially since she clearly said that she can't paint the body color of the house.

I'd keep the contrast with the body color very low. Don't use a dark color because the trim just isn't that interesting that you need to draw attention to it. Are the windows paintable? One of them looks like a bright white vinyl window. If they're vinyl, that means you're dealing with 2 shades of white already.

Look around the neighborhood and see what others are using that looks good.

A nice sage green or a darker green would be cute also, with a cinnamon brown door. I noticed the light fixtures, and it’s a very odd placement for them. Even though budget is an issue, I would want to change them if it was my home.

Another possibility that’s a bit more fun, green trim with a teal or turquoise door.

I had a white house with green trim and really liked how it looked. Cute kitties, glad you have nice cushioned chairs for them.

    What color is your roof?

Boys like pink too. And I think soft pink trim would be very cute. That said, I actually like the dusty blue a lot from what I can tell from your second pic so it's possible our tastes are very different!

What vibe are you going for? Beachy, cottage-y, restrained elegance?

Thanks for the help! I agree with everyone about the the light fixtures and they are going to change as well. But I wanted to figure out the paint first.

The look I want is a well-cared for cottage/farmhouse because that's what this is. But I do want something fresher than the powder blue trim. The first three rooms were built in 1937, then more in the forties-sixties (I think). IMHO, there's no sense in pretending this house is something other than a modest cottage that was built onto as the family grew and respecting the charm of that. The neighborhood has grown up around it so there are house styles from all decades. The door is painted steel so no options for a wood finish without door replacement. Upstairs, the windows have all been replaced in 2018. Downstairs, we have windows from every era since original build but those will slowly be replaced as well with simple white framed windows (I do love old windows but none here are in great shape or with special charm).

The roof is conventional gray tile with a hint of green. Attached are some more summer photos from the listing last year. The cedar looking shed is part of t

he property and I do not anticipate painting it.

MarleneM, your second suggestion really got me thinking. I do prefer three house colors and maybe something like that will look fresh and not too jarring contrasted with the cedar shed. Plus I do love blue and green together as you can see from the cushions Mdln commented on. Thanks!

Mdln, it is interesting how cats seem to know that whenever there's a comfortable spot to sit, it was intended for them.

Don't have a current pic but my sister used Ben Moore Tarrytown Green for the trim on her white house. Really nice.

I think green would look stunning!!

I would do the ceiling of the porch blue because that's classic...And you simply must have some roses and clematis..

Can I ask what's going on with the pots in the front (in the pic with snow)? I've never seen anything like it..

I agree with other comments, it’s an adorable house. I notice from your ideabooks you seem to like colour. In fact there is one kitchen pic that shows a white kitchen with pops of teal and green. If you plan to decorate the inside with colour, I think you could introduce the bright colours on the exterior, it will all make sense and be charming!

Your house is adorable. The key to picking a trim colour is looking at your roof colour. Especially in your case where it shows a lot. It is hard to tell from your photos, but it looks like some shade of grey. Pick one of them. The one that is closest to the dust that settles on the sills would be most relaxing. Then, like everyone else has suggested, have some fun with your front door colour.

I agree that green would be a great choice. With a pretty yellow door. This is SW Reseda Green.

    And this is SW Beeswax

I really love the dark red. The orange of the cedar cook house and the dark red look really good together. You could use natural cedar planters on your railings.

Thanks for doing that Grover! I think OP has so many great options with such an adorable house to start with.

Siggymint, definitely don't forget the haint blue for the porch roof!

I'm sure you could pull that electrical wiring back and add your lights to either side of the front door as well.

Like this green one best. With the green in your roof, I would not do red unless you changed your roof shingles.

Groveraxle, thank you SO much for the renderings. How helpful. I really hadn't thought of green much but all this feedback is making me reconsider. And I agree that the lemonade porch ceiling should be a sky blue (for both tradition and the joy of it).

Pennydesign, the green/blue pots are from the stoop on my last house. Previously I had potato vine (which does well here), coming through the gumdrop shaped metalwork top pieces. I picked them up at a garage sale, long ago, and they seem to be designed to be part of a hanging plant but are so huge, I never got around to hanging them anywhere. So I stuck them on those pots to give them some presence. I've also wound lights around them in the winter to highlight the gumdrop look. I put them there when I moved just to sort of mark the path but they don't have to live there. This year I've been so busy with other house projects (all the boring and costly system stuff) that I haven't planted anything so maybe they look silly?

I think any of those trims would work, color wise....I still lean to a brown door though. Like, an old farmhouse color brown. I don't know why....if it's the style of the house or what, but distressed brown/rustic farmhouse chic sort of door.

Siggy, I don't think the pots look silly at all...they're quirky and go with the house and are, frankly, a really good idea (love the Christmas lights idea!)
