This is one for decorators, different depths, sofa and loveseat?

I am going to purchase a 78" sofa and a love seat 67". Love the way two cushion sofas look but I always end up sitting in the middle. So I want to buy a three cushion sofa, 41" deep and the love seat only has two cushions and I was considering getting it at 39" inch deep so it will clear the sofa's arm better, L shape layout. Do you think anyone will notice that the depths are different ??? Ideally I know 3 cushions on both sofas would look so better, no space. Also do you think nail heads on both pieces would be overkill??? I need a sofa that is high in the back but yet not looking like a family room sofa. Hallagan has a nice sofa that meets my needs (Manchester), but what concerns me is their fabrics seem much thinner than the sofa I bought 18 years ago. Fabric is beige, 52% polyester and 48% acrylic, S (cleaning code) RR? grade 34. Since I not longer have a den, this sofa will be used. This was the nicest one I could find. I believe this may be my last cry for help:) Thank you.

Looks like the Houzz gremlins are making responses disappear! But I still would do bench seats on both pieces, nailheads on one or none, and not worry about the difference in depths. Your shorter friends might even prefer the 39".

Sorry I can't help about that specific fabric, but Hallagan sofas wear like tanks.

Hollybar Unfortunately they do not have a one cushion sofa in the Manchester. Thank you so much for the input.

I hope you and your family are very tall because a 41" depth sofa is really deep. Even 39" is pretty deep. But to answer your question, I highly doubt anyone will notice a 2" difference in depth. As long as the scale of the two pieces are similar, you'll be fine.

    Hello,

For most of our projects, we do sectionals/sofas that are 39" deep and 36" high overall on the backside. We find that the majority of our clients, regardless of age and sex, all enjoy those dimensions versus something shallower or taller in the back.

I'm attaching a few photos from different projects we've done, some are casual, some are more formal. You can see visually the sizes of a loveseat, sofa and a sectional with 39" depth and 36" height on the back to kind of gauge what it'll look like in your space.

On the nailehads- if you think it might be an overkill, doing it in every other spacing would be nice as well.

41" for the depth is very deep, and it may be hard to get in and out of for someone older.

Sabrina Alfin interiors. They are the same, but I will do the loveseat not as deep. Like I said I wish I could do two 78” sofas but it doesn’t fit. Can I do nail heads on both since they’re so close together or will that look cheesy ?

Are you talking about overall depth of the piece, or seat depth?

I guess it’s overall because it states 41 deep seat cushions are 24 inches

Sabrina I am starting from scratch nothing in that room will be there. Except for the dining table and chairs

The dining room chairs with a blanket on it as my makeshift loveseat .

Seat depth is important to comfort, and depends on your preferences and the way you will use the sofa. Mine is 23 inches deep and I wish it was deeper as I like to sit with my feet tucked up and I feel like I’m sitting on a ledge when I sit that way. It’s fine for sitting upright with my feet on the floor. My DH hates it. Also, I have a two cushion and I tend to sit in the middle on the crack, the cushions are getting really mashed. Next sofa will be different. Have you had the opportunity to sit on this sofa? I wouldn’t buy another one without sitting on it first.

saypoint that is why I do not want a 2 cushion seat I always sit in the middle, even when I’m alone it’s crazy . I sat on one exactly the same but it wasn’t 41 inches it was 39. They usually put the middle one on the floor. I really did not like the synthetic down filling called Duraloft ( I don’t think I’m spelling that correctly) but they also offer foam covered in down.

Sabrina Alfin Interiors does the pictures give you clearer thought about the nailheads?

My comment stands. Nailheads on one piece only, IMO.

A sofa and a loveseat are the subject of many Houzz Dilemmas. Hard to arrange.

You'd be better off possibly to get two sofas and have them face each other.

Can you show more pictures of your room, please?

Why do you need a high back? They do make a single cushion sofa.

Leelee I have a very bad back issue, I need the back cushions to support my head.

Leelee sofa in my condo can not face each other. I am looking at the Mansfield sofa by Hallagan.

    Ouch, sorry about your back.

I second nailheads on only the main sofa. If the pieces do not match you sort of want them to be contrasting enough to not look like a bad half-match if that makes sense :)

Color Zen even though they are next to each other and they are the same, except one is 10 inches shorter? Thank you

    Sofas with one cushion

Better to have a sofa and two chairs IMO

The sofa and chairs don't have to match, just work well together.

Beverly Fla Deziner this is how it would look with 2 chairs, Unless I put the chairs where I thought the loveseat would be. The picture below somebody inserted the two chairs in the corner.

Here are two layouts for your area

Based on your dining room chairs, I would recommend you consider a more traditional classic style sofa like you see below with an upholstered saddle arm that takes up minimal space. It's an easy sofa that has a matching lounge chair or the ability to pair all different style chairs that work well with it. See images below.

BTW I don't see any reason why you can't consider a sofa about 88"+/- in length. Your current sofa is too short for your room.

BeverlyFLADeziner I was just using this sofa until,,,, it was in my den. I gave away my living room set from my home before I moved to this high-rise. I can do an 88" sofa but I would not be able to have an end table at the end of the sofa, there wouldn't be any room to walk through to the dining room (without the end table I have 37" walkway). On the other side of the room I was trying to hide an ugly convector which is why I wanted to put a loveseat in front of the windows, the pan indicates the difference in the sofa length. I would have 70" for either 2 chairs or one 67" loveseat (I believe you are saying 2 chairs are more pleasing to the eye than a loveseat)? The second layout would work, the first layout, one would be walking into the chair. Beverly thank you so much for your time!

pan is the difference in sofa length

Walkway to dining room, no room for end table.

It's been my experience that people tend to walk around furnishing arrangements, not through them. Once the round end table is placed at the intersection between the chair and the sofa, no one will walk through your narrow space.

Provide some actual dimensions and we'll make sure items can fit correctly.

The 2 chairs will be right in front of the window, no room to pass. The door way to the living room from the foyer is directly across from where the chairs would be (see arrow on layout). The chairs or love seat will have to be put right up against the convector, no walk through there.

There are 2 doorways into the living room, one from the foyer and from the kitchen, there is another doorway in the foyer to the kitchen. it is a circle, which my grandchildren love to run around and around etc. Only way to the dining room from the living room, is at the end of the sofa,
Dining room is right behind my covered dining room chairs (make believe sofa) In this picture I put the sofa in front of the windows. The room dimensions are 28.4' long (living room/dining room) and 15' wide. It is the width that is the biggest issue.

Beverly, I know 15 feet is not that wide, and that is the big problem here! I put masking tape down, and I realized that I can not do an 88" sofa, because the side chairs ( or another small sofa) does not allow for a person to sit at the end of sofa and another person to sit on the chair, talk about playing footsies :) So I have no choice but to use an 80" sofa, which is a shame. If I could, I would move! The saving grace about this building, the amenities are wonderful. Thanks again for you help!

Nothing wrong with an apartment sized sofa. Check Crate & Barrel for lots of choices. Make sure the depth isn't too great. If you select a sofa with minimal arms you'll have more seating area.

These big rolled arms take away lots of inches.
