HELP WITH LIVING ROOM layout and design!

I decided my summer project would be to improve the look and functionality of my entire house, starting with the living room. It's an open-concept living room/kitchen design and it's practically empty. I would like to decorate, furnish, and create a better layout. But it's not as easy as I thought. Here are some of the issues I'm facing:

  1. I don't like the look of the fish tank, it's big and bulky and it's an eyesore, but my fiance loves his African Cichlids... One of the filters would not fit inside the cabinet of the tank and I'm having a hard time trying to think of ways to hide it.
  2. We have long white cables running across the floor in front of the fireplace and along the sides of the walls that need to be concealed/covered. Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon but for now I'd like to make them less noticeable.
  3. We have a new leather couch that's an intense dark brown, almost black color, and the cabinet the fish tank is on is black. So I'm trying to find furniture to compliment those colors.
  4. Since it's an open-concept living room/kitchen, the "themes" should compliment each other. I don't have a theme for either so I'm open to suggestions!

There's an old couch and cabinet that I'm getting rid of and are scribbled out in the photos. The two tables next to the fish tank are also going.
Take a look and let me know what you think, I'm open to all ideas and suggestions! Thanks

Is there another wall that the fish tank will fit?

    No, unfortunately not.

Wow, that’s a tough one with such a large tank. If you scooted the tank down the wall closer to the fireplace, would there be room for a low profile tv stand opposite the sofa?

I could probably move it about 3 ft max but no further because of the back porch door. But even then the outside filter would be in the way of the tv stand :/

Can’t the outside filter be moved down with the tank? Do you really need both porch doors to be accessible?

You have nice light streamlined bones of the room and then you a very dark overbearing sofa. I would turn it face FP and hang the TV over the FP. Next I would look for a rug probably 9x12 but definitely 8x10.

I use my fireplace regularly in the fall and winter so I couldn't mount the tv above it. I would love that though! It would be beautiful. I was thinking of placing a vent cover over the vent similar to this...

depending on the overall theme I decide to go with. Or this...

I just measured and the tank would fit on the left or the right side of the bar with 6 inches to spare. And what do you mean by moving the filter down with the tank? I mean, yeah it moves with the tank but I want to hide it, I don't like the look of a huge white filter. & I suppose I don't need both porch doors to be accessible.

I secretly hate the sofa. If I had known my fiance was buying one I would have definitely gone with a cream or light tan color. I couldn't mount the tv above the FP entryway it's too small of a space and it would be extremely high

jck910,,,love that 2nd rug. where'd you find that?

Kimberly. don't worry about the filter, we can camouflage that later. lets just find a place for everything.

if that tank will move to the bar area, perfect! do it.

then we can concentrate on finding you a decent console for that large wall, lowering that tv (you guys must have rubber necks), and finding a rug and some chairs for you.

I know it's a pain to move the fist tank, so take a pic after it's done.

what's w/the white sofa by the bar? do you have any bar stools?

    What about any art?

I would really love to incorporate a bookshelf. Maybe to the left of the bar

It's not as tall as you think! Lol. Finding a rug will be the hardest part for me personally. But it's something I've been contemplating. You think sliding the tank to the left a bit and putting a tv console to the right would look good? I'm getting rid of the white sofa. My fiance randomly brought home the leather one so I'm trying to get it out of here asap, it's such an eyesore.

I have tons of art I'm just saving those for last. And we've got a few bar stools that are close to the color of the sofa

can you move the tank to the left of the bar? if you do that, I'll give you a whole wall of shelves, cabs and a place for the tv.

keeping the tank there and squeezing in the tv next to it is last resort. I'd rather you didn't. this is how we will set up your sofa. Ignore the furnishings. just look at the layout.

trust me, can you move the tank to the corner bar area?

Yeah, it'll fit. I'd still have to find a way to hide the filter.

you're killing me w/that filter! it can be hidden. don't sweat it. at the very least, can you not do another cabinet so the filter can go under it?

or here, stick it in a basket

make a 3 sided table to fit around it. put a plant on top. lots of things

I just saw your pictures, I really love the first and second. I'd actually prefer to get another cabinet. I can't stand the black, it brings too much darkness to the room. I could also move the tank to the right side of the bar so it's not right in front of the hallway like it'd be on the left.

A vertical aquarium would be absolutely beautiful built into a wall of shelves!

oh yes, now you're talking. then you could do some specific lighting over it. I was thinking you could do a cab like this to house everything.

when you say, "the right side of the bar", what do you mean? I only see room to the left.

btw, those two doors, do you use both, or only one? could you treat one door like a window and put a chair in front of it?

and that second built in shelving is what I was suggesting for the big wall. that whole thing is an Ikea hack. you guys handy?

Consider moving the fish tank and cabinet on which it sits to the left. Move the tv to the right and hang it on the wall just above a black, rectangle shaped, box shelf. If you're DIY inclined, you could build the shelf yourself with shelving board, finishing nails and black paint.

Hide the filter in one of a pair black, square/cube footlockers you stand on each side of the tank -- with a potted plant (snake plant) atop each footlocker. Cut out the right sized hole in the back of the footlocker to fit the filter and wires through.

Very handy. Yes! I love the white cabinets but on the left side have a vertical tank!

I don't need to use both, I like your idea of putting a chair in front. Add a lamp and you've got yourself a nice cozy place to read

& there's a wall on the other side of the bar next to the fireplace that's approximately the same size as the wall to the left

I was going to ask you if it would fit there but it looked too small. the prob w/putting it there is now you've visually blocked the door and light. it's going to look very crowded over there. IMO. I could be wrong, but I think on the left side would be a better option.

I'd make that little area around the FP a sitting area.

Yeah I like that idea. a little reading corner
  • 6 years ago

Could do this with the fish tank on the bottom under the TV

or just make one of those large enough to house the tv and tank side by side. yours looks a little large to go under the tv, no?

you seem to be fighting putting the tank over in that back corner.

I just feel it would be strange to look at when someone is coming down the hallway
