Need decor ideas for living room please!

Decorative dilemmas galore and I don't know what I'm doing! Our couches are too large for the space (BUT) we love them, so comfy and don't want to get rid of them so I'm trying to work around them. We have 20 foot ceilings in this space - counter area entering kitchen walkway space is limited and TV has to stay where it is. No rug for now - I have a 12 yr old blind Chihuahua that ruins them. Other than that everything is changeable. I like minimal/contemporary- less is more. A few statement pieces but I am at a loss. I don't know where to start. I need help with drapes, artwork, and possible painting an accent wall?? (although I would love not too! Ha!) I've moved these couches every way possible and this is where I left them. I wouldn't mind getting rid of the recliner if it helps with the design. Also, should I do same curtains in kitchen? Both of these rooms are relatively small. The ceiling and windows make it feel more spacious. I'm new to Houzz but seems like an awesome place to ask for help. Cheers!

I think your two sofas will be fine if you get some big (as in fat/fluffy) pillows-at least 20 x 20 for the ones on each end and 18 x 18 for the others-on both of the sofas. Find coordinating patterns vs solids as you have no pattern in the room Get a rectangular coffee table-your end tables are too “matchy” with your current coffee table. A glass top will open the room visually if you feel the sofas look too large. Put some nice books and a candle on it. If the corner plant is fake, remove it. Hide cords from tv. Put a nice rectangular tray under the tv that has some shine to it and a real plant in a nice decorative pot on the right side of it (both of these on the tv table) and a nice vase on the left. How do you feel about plantation shutters on windows? I can’t tell if your sofa reclines, but if not, a sofa table with a pretty gold lamp would look good. I would remove the recliner, and if you need more seating, replace it with a chair that isn’t reclining. I don’t know what style or look you are trying to achieve, but the things I suggested would be a very nice traditional. Your home is very pretty.

A colorful area rug should set the tone for the accessories you're missing. It should slip under the front 1/3 of the two sofas and extend past the end's of them by a foot or so. Use painter's tape on the floor to do this and your virtual rug should tell you the right size you need to buy. If what you tape out isn't a standard size, try to go up to the next standard size if possible.

Hi Donna, thank you for the suggestions! I had a rectangular "chest" coffee table but it was too bulky but an open one might work better. I'm wondering about curtains and art work. Not sure- these high walls are so intimidating, week!

Hi. I too, have high ceilings in my living room. A color that isn’t so white might help to bring down your ceilings a little. I don’t know if you’re even open to painting; I know it would be a job! Your floors look beige in one picture and gray in the other. I can’t tell. Some art with color will really warm up your space. Use larger art and be sure to hang it at eye level-I think art looks good with the center about 60-61” from floor. Some will disagree with me, but I would also use frames that have width so your art will stand out. Stacked pictures on each side of the television will look good. The larger sofa looks like it is too close to the wall. I know you don’t want a rug right now, but one would really ground the space. If you use drapes on your windows, use substantial rods (2-3 inches in diameter). I would use panels on rings in one of the fabrics you choose for the pillows. Hang the rods 12 inches above your windows and have the panels to “kiss” the floor.

If you stack pictures on each side of your tv, hang a decorative rectangular piece over the tv. Horchow website has some very pretty decorative pieces. A long mirror with a pretty frame will look good where the silver art is now hanging (if the wall is wide enough-I can’t tell from the pictures) and will fill that wall.

I really like what you’ve done so far, even with the large leather sofas, lol! I wouldn’t paint a feature wall, the white walls are very nice. I do think you could use a bit if colour though. I suggest you replace the mirror with a large piece of art, something you could derive a colour scheme from, like in the photo below where blue and rust were used in pillows. Some simple linen curtains would be nice, and you could do same in kitchen, or they could just coordinate in some way. Maybe same fabric but different colour in kitchen to flow the colour between both spaces, or same colour but one plain and one patterned. For the chair, I think it would be a great idea to replace it in a smaller scale fabric chair, then move the floor lamp over by chair, and the table lamp to between the two sofas.

Thank you ladies! Awesome ideas! I'm making my list! :)

I hope you won't be offended if I tell you those are the most boring throw pillows ever. I think a little less aggressive plant, curtains hung as high as the opening to the kitchen, a larger coffee table and a less bulky chair will start bringing this room together.

Oh yeah, and more interesting pillows.

I would consider a light colored [for low contrast] metal piece, etc... buying 2 or 3... I noticed your mirror and table sculpture.

More or less as above, heavy cream colored curtains for the window, making certain that the rod is long enough that curtains leave the majority of the window visible. Try gold metal curtain rods to introduce a color different than brown. I agree to removing the chair and finding one that has fabric, in a different color. You might try terra cotta, with terra cotta pillows on the couch. Velvet is good in that it doesn't slide on leather, but also have some pillows with a pattern, perhaps introduce blue as another color, try blue with white. Definitely a good sized coffee table made of metal and glass. Find an interesting elongated pottery bowl or plate for the console under the TV that is colorful and not just another dark or colorless piece. You have a nice home that needs to show more personality and interest. Find a place for books, if nothing else on the large coffee table. I would substitue a table lamp that doesn't match the floor lamp, something more interesting, ceramic would be nice. I would eliminate the photograph and the metal heart. A soft blanket for your doggie in a brown and beige leopard print on the couch would look nice.

If you love some item, place it where it'd be a bit grand, and by that I mean: a slight bit up the wall --

I think that if you did indoor/outdoor rug, it should handle the pup's problems. I agree with grover about those pillows, I would like to continue her one to give more color.
if too bright, let me know I have others that are more subdued.

Grover to the rescue! I love being able to see the pieces in a photo, thank you! I hate those pillows too. Do you recommend a website to find good pillows? Thank you!
Ingrid - thank you for the guidance and tips! Is there a recommendation on where to start? I think that's why I feel stuck. I don't know if I pick curtains or pillows first? or Chair and coffee table?

Without consideration for the media cabinet, is there enough room to have mounted the TV on the wall opposite the windows so that you could have a better arrangement of seating for the area?

The TV would be wall mounted across from the seating.

Awe Beverly, a woman after my own heart! That's how I envisioned the room while being built - and the kitchen cabinet wrap around in the room wasn't there so I thought "Cleary this is the wall for the TV!" Gosh I hate to be wrong *tear*. But our area just got "wireless cable" so it might be an option now so I'm going to be checking on that!

Adding colour would definitely help. Any thoughts on possibly adding a wooden dark plank border appx. 9 - 10 ft high and then painting the bottom portion of the wall below the border a slightly lighter beige? It might cozy up the living area. It feels so stark right now. And adding artwork will add visual interest as well.

Hi Nicole, not too sure about that. I'm a little designer challenged as you can see. I am miffed about artwork for this room. How high? How big? Should I not do anything above the height of the windows? What walls should I add or not add artwork to. I'm fighting giant white walls and the walls are winning. :(

k moe, i removed the pillows you disliked. i get pillows from many sites, i work on them being $25 or less for 18x18. can you give more guidance? you have no colors or style listed?

Contemporary, Scandanavian, Minimalist. The couches don't reflect that but that's what I have been moving toward. Left a 5k sq foot house to a 1800 and thoroughly loving the less is more... I like neutral tones, no yellow or purple. I prefer silver over gold. I see a lot of people incorporate both and I like it, I just don't know how to do it where it would look good.

K Moe, you don't have any good walls for art except for the TV wall, but the TV is so large, it's pretty much all that wall can accommodate. Go ahead and let the walls win in this room. Keep your focus low and don't worry about the space above. Just let it make the room feel expansive and allow the light to flood in.

Havingfun suggested an indoor/outdoor rug. A rug would certainly help cozy up the space and some of the polypropylene rugs can be taken outside and hosed off.

Safavieh has a line of rugs called Porcello that has some nice modern designs, are not too expensive, and are polypropylene. Here is one:

A little texture in your pillows would go a long way. I'll see what I can find.

A couple of pillows and a throw.

We have a cat that will pee on any rugs, and at one point, we tried a large indoor/outdoor rug in one of our rooms. Let me say that it is a major pain in the rear to roll up, take outside, hose off/clean, wait to dry and then return to the room. So, we are going rugless for now. We will revisit a rug when we no longer have that cat. It really isn’t worth the hassle - for us - but you may find that’s its not a big deal.

You have a nice space, lots of lights, i don’t blame you for not getting rid of those couches, i have the same ones (without the recliner) in my livingroom and they are so comfy, saddly i dont have any recommendations for you as im having the same dilemma as i don’t know how to decorate my living room, i also want a big rug but i want it big, cream color and fluffy but with 2 kids and a chihuahua i dont know if i want to deal with the mess, snacks all over the pretty rug, my pet pee...sigh

with so many recliners? I would go with more side tables I think. funny thing those are modern and minimalistic pillows. let me give some other ideas, but some colors or other notes would really help.modern scan design

going too white or light which is often what is meant by minilism will look like big holes on those dark sofas, so we have to go bright or dark.

avingfun: TY for the help, I love bright color in other people's homes just not for me personally. I love neutral soft palette , and sparkle is always nice. I am searching for curtains, chair, throw and pillows for now. I have to see what my budget can handle Haha!

Neutral doesn't have to be boring. Look for pillows with lots of texture. Go on the hunt for some Moroccan wedding blanket pillows like these from Restoration Hardware...
