Photos... A trip down memory lane.

Hi everyone, I was feeling a bit nostalgic today and was going through some old photos and came across these adenium photos from around a decade ago. They are all ‘singles’ that we grew from seed. This was before we had access to double/triple/patterned seed. Over the years we have renewed and culled our collection....so most of these now live with family and friends and many others were sold. As much as I love doubles/triples, I still can’t go past a good ‘single’

    And some more.

This was a large Arabicum we used to have,

Two Adeniums, a regular one on the left and a black (caudex) Adenium on the right.

This one we grew as a ‘standard’ or tower form.

These photos are of the same plant. We had this Adenium for 15yrs. It was huge, heavy and never seemed to stop flowering. It took two people to lift it.

    Last photos.

Hope you enjoyed having a look at these. :)

I have to ask, where did you get those plant stands that hold several vertically? I need them! Beautiful collection!

Rachel - stunning plants, your photos are a treat. I love the big caudexes. Would you say, Adenium like more ceramic pots or plastic pots? Any difference?

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

Candice, I bought those plant stands here in Australia from a nursery. They don’t stock them anymore. Maybe one of your nurseries can source something similar?

Pete, yes we have grown so many Adeniums over the years, and it has been a lot of fun. Sometimes I wish I could have kept them all.

Agartta, Back then we grew our plants in both because we just liked the look of them. The ‘black’ ceramic was good at keeping the plants warm from the sun in Winter and I think they contributed to slightly bigger underground root growth, by staying warm. We did eventually switch to the plastic because it was cheaper with our ever expanding collection.

My honest opinion now would be that terracotta is better, because the terracotta absorbs excess moisture. The plastic are good too, ours have plenty of drainage holes.

What a sight to wake up to this morning.....those are all beautiful and my favorite were the whites :) and the dark caudex one.

I can see why the large one took two people to move....WOW!

Was there a certain name/type for the dark caudex one?

    Happy Gardening, Jeannie :)

Thanks Jeannie, Lonnie and Rick :)

Jeannie, the “black” caudex adenium was part of a mixed Obesum seed pack we bought from overseas (Thailand I think) so I don’t have a variety name for that one. It was the only one that came out in the purple/black colour. The whole plant was black...stems and caudex. It was that colour right from the start, even as a little fatty. The more sun it had the darker it got. (This plant never suffered sunburn.) The flowers on that one were plain pink.

Back then there were a couple of suppliers that were selling what they called “black Adeniums” but as new flower hybrids (doubles/triples etc) took over they seemed to disappear....Maybe they had trouble replicating them. I have since seen some selling “black” Arabicum’s that are supposed to have a black skin, but they weren’t the same black as ours.

    Rachel:

Your plants are beautifully grown, and very enjoyable to see all the photos of yesteryear's plants and flowers.

Love the simple, single-blossoms sitting en masse, on top of these fancy fat-plants that we grow.

    Thanks for the look-see.

Thanks Elena, Kate and Frank :)

Sometimes I think we forget just how beautiful a “single” flowering Adenium can be. Hopefully these photos might inspire others to take another look at their single flowering Adeniums and realise the potential they have. :)

so much fun ... even my family admires them, once in awhile ... but not when I ask for help to move the ones in the big ceramic pots [lol]
