NEW house help! How can I update/ modernize paint with Brown carpet

I desperately want to brighten up our living room and add more of a modern/updated look by repainting the ceiling and walls. Both of which are a sandy brown color. My dilemma is we do not want to buy new carpet- as it is new and nice. But also brown. We have lots and lots of trim, which is an off white. I REALLY want to avoid painting the trim as there is so much of it throughout our house.
I am considering going with a grey-beige like Sherman Williams “Agreeable Grey” but wondering if that is a complete design “no no” because of the trim and carpet colors.
We are also adding stone to our fireplace that would incorporate greys whites and tans. Please help!

You have quite a few cards there. I would start by eliminating some to narrow it down. I think the darker ones can go. It’s hard to tell from photos but some look a bit aqua, like the tall card on bottom, and the one to the left of it looks a bit purple or pink, not sure if it’s just photo or lighting. When you narrow it down more, take a photo with the paint chips beside the stone and carpet, that may help narrow it down more. When you have 3 favs, get some sample cans to try. I think the two on the bottom right look best to me, but can’t see what colours they are.

Your home is beautiful! I would remove all gray options for sure. Keep your house light and cheerful. Check out the number of posters who come on here after painting their houses gray and wonder why their homes are now dark and dreary.

Here's a classic Houzz article about whites and other colors that go with wood. Think of your carpeting as a wood color. You also have to take into account your honey floors and cabinets. Here are some recommended neutrals when you have wood tones:

I'm not a fan of any of those gray/brown combos because the tone is too often the same. But if you must, get a pale gray that goes with the honey tones of your floors and cabinets. Camel furnishings with warm gold pillows and accents could work.

We think painting your house a very light color would be nice, but maybe not the grey. The grey might clash with the carpet. Try doing something light and bright perhaps instead.

I think Agreeable gray by SW will work great. It is gray but warm and brown family.

I actually think it looks better now than with the Agreeable gray above. I don't think it looks that bad and will look better once you get furniture and other colors in there. I expected a lot worse based on the thread title. I wouldn't mix gray and brown. If anything paint the walls to match the trim but I am not sure I would even do that.

The most floors are brown light/medium/dark wood colors! So do not focus on it. It looks as main wood floor color.

Just came to say that those are some excellent carpet triangles you’ve got there!

I actually like the color on the walls now. But if you really want to change it, I would go with a warm off white or other light neutral.

I really think that the mock-up with the gray proves the point that gray does not work. Your home looks so good already!

I like the way it looks now - once you get furniture and art in, I think it will look great. If you hate the color, I'd do a warm cream tone a couple of shades "darker" than you trim.

Don't paint until you furnish the rooms. Then you will know what color paint to finish with. I learned the hard way. I painted light Gray and then fell in love with rug and sofa in warm tones.

What if you just painted the ceiling 25% of the wall color? The ceiling is the only thing that makes it look dark to me. I don't mind the wall color.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the feedback. I am considering doing a warm white for walls and ceiling. I love the modern farm house look. I want to believe with the brown carpet & hardwoods and cream trim it will all balance. Hoping it won’t be too stark or blah. Here’s my inspiration:

I have painted SW West Highland white on Left and Alabaster Right side. The look the same lol. We have our furniture in- which is all brown too lol.

Maybe just painting the ceiling and accent wall with a warm white instead of the entire space?

I would lean toward painting it all white - it would really brighten the space up.

for sure paint the ceiling white. just use the white base straight out of the can. don't have it tinted! use a flat, ceiling white. painting the ceiling will have a huge impact on the reflective quality.

if doing white on the walls, it's really going to make the trim look dingy. I'd redo all the trim (do a little at a time) and the ceiling, and reevaluate the wall color. if you still think it's too dark, try BM Pale Oak
