How to Update Espresso bed/headboard and bedroom itself

I have a bed that was purchased several years ago from BoConcept that is espresso color (I know, I know...) that I am hoping to update somehow rather than buy a new bed. The bed is in perfect condition, and wasn't terribly cheap. Anyone have any ideas on what to do? Can you paint it...and if so, what colors? I don't mind getting rid of the dresser that goes with it, unless someone has a great idea for that too?

Or is there a way to update the bedroom and leave the furniture this color? Although I confess I'm pretty tired of the dark color. Everything in the room is already white (walls, duvet, etc) to lighten it.

The furniture looks like the below. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks, I'd like to change the color of the wood if possible. Has anyone tried that successfully? I think putting on a fabric headboard will be less of a modern look than what I'd like. Seems like it would be hard with such a dark wood/stain/veneer/whateveritis. :-) I can't even seem to find a good example on here, so maybe it's a new bed or live with it!

If you are fond of a more contemporary style pairing the dark colored bed with a bright color, such as turquoise, would be a great look! I could see a black and white area rug in a geometric pattern and a bright colored dresser, linens. Good luck!

Thank you, but I don't care for color particularly. My bedroom currently looks more like this one, except the hardwood floors in my room are also dark--so too much dark, IMO.

I think the espresso finish is a good neutral that can be combined with other neutrals or bright colors with good results. n In this high rise condominium, we used a fairly neutral palette to give it a timeless look.

You can probably DIY a fabric headboard to go over yours. That should help lighten it up.

I agree that espresso furniture is rather dated, and I can understand being tired of it.

I'd suggest getting rid of the chest of drawers altogether and minimizing the amount of wood exposed. The bed itself isn't bad, is it making the room darker? If it's all white already, it sounds like you're already making it brighter.

Perhaps a lighter colored area rug to lighten the floor as well. If you have nightstands that are dark too, maybe different ones in a contrasting color or shape would help.

I hope you get some ideas on this. I have something similar and have thought about painting it but have just been too lazy to pull the matress off and get to it.
