Please help me decorate/organize/layout my very small office!

I am itching to do something with my office. My husband and I finally were able to get our hands on some base cabinets to build a new desk.... unfortunately, they are 24ish" deep so that means they jutted out far more than I had originally planned, so no L shaped desk was possible, without going in front of the window... which was completely shut down by my husband. So it looks like we are going to have a large straight desk across the wall. We also have a large safe in the corner along with a cabinet that has our printer on top of it and paper, etc. in the storage of the cabinet. On the right is a 3 cube storage system that has bins with craft supplies, etc. in it. I am thinking we definitely need a new rug in this space to lighten it up and I almost feel like something else is needed in order for the space to be better organized, less cluttered, and tidy. Also, does anyone have any suggestions for decorating, etc? The desk will be hopefully completed this weekend, with a dark wood top and white drawers with silver pulls. Thanks!

PS the space is approximately 8'x11'- very small. :)

You really need to utilize the full height of the room for your storage. Rather than several short storage systems, get one floor to ceiling unit for one of the walls. That is the only way to reduce clutter and make the room feel larger. I would use the cabinets and desktop that you have over the safe on the shorter wall, which gives you a surface for your printer, and look for tall closed and open shelving and a desk for the larger wall.

Art work on larger wall and black and white bamboo shade, and hide rug for aesthetic look

we need a rug to protect the floor from the chair... should we do a lighter rug that is smaller?

L can not end by the window because the cabinet is too deep.

No, you need a matt that goes under the chair to protect the floor, you can get those at office supply places. chairs dont roll well on rugs anyway.

It depends on what you do in the office and how much you want to spend, but I would: Get rid of the rug entirely and leave the floor au natural, but add a desk chair mat under your chair to protect the floor. Add a few tall shelves or bookcases, depending on what you need them for (files vs equipment vs books) -- Ikea has some nice options that aren't expensive and are easy to assemble. I'd add colour to the window covering (different drape? coloured tie?) and then decide if you want art work/photos and/or a corkboard/white board.

If your peripherals (like printers, etc) are small, you may want to consider something like Ikea's Kallax series, because they could fit in some of the boxes, while you use others for books or baskets. I wish I'd thought of that before I got the storage unit I did.

I have my desk chair on hardwood floor for years (25 plus) and see no wear.

Toronto, I was considering investing in some cube storage in other locations in the space... will keep y'all posted :)

You don't need rug or floor mates to protect hardwood floor. There are Floor Protector Rubber Caster Wheels available from Amazon. The ones I got work great (has been 3 years) for my home office hardwood floor.
