Full Replacement Marvin Windows with brick exterior

last modified: 7 years ago

A few years ago, I replaced some old awful casement windows with Marvin Ultimates casements in one room. I think the Marvin Ultimates are great, but I have had an issue with being able to hang cellular blinds within their frames. The depth is not enough to hang the blinds due to how the Ultimates' casement frame has a lot of steps in it. Now I want to replace several old windows in another bedroom.

When the contractor came to look at it and measure, he said that because this bedroom faces the back, which is a brick exterior, there should not be the depth issue for the Marvin Ultimates that the other room's windows had--those faced the front which is not a brick exterior. He mentioned something about setting it differently because of the brick.

I didn't ask him what he meant by that, and we got distracted by talking about my choices, and when he'd send the quote, etc. I am unlikely to use him--he was 2 hours late for the appointment, and was rushed and abrupt--so am reluctant to try to reach him for more explanation. These will be full replacements, but they are replacements, not new construction. Can one of the experts here please explain to me why the fact that the exterior is brick would enable the replacement window frame to be deeper and what he meant by setting back? TIA.

So you want someone to explain something that was said by a third party you don't want to ask? After you get this information, what do you plan doing with it? I don't understand why you can't let the installer explain how, what and why they do what they do.

Klem1 - I didn't expect that response. I thought the purpose of these forums is to get answers to questions that people post--isn't it? I explained in my OP that the contractor was 2 hours late and was rushed and abrupt. It would actually be wrong of me to have him spend his time to answer my follow-up questions when I have no intention of using him. Don't you think that would be wrong for me to do that? And I think it unlikely he'd answer me anyway, given how he behaved when he came to my house. I hope that this response soothes your outrage.

Lkbum_gw - the contractor specifically said that this bedroom's windows would not have the issue my other bedroom's windows have because of the brick. He even pointed to the brick and said, "see, this is brick, so I can set the windows back more". I didn't know what he meant. I will look at the windows more closely as you suggested.

Snap some pictures of both the different type window openings.

Shannon-It is indeed our goal to try and answer reasonable questions. To ask what was going through that contractors head and why he said something is not a reasonable question (esp when you said yourself he didn't act serious).

Not an expert, buy I got Marvin windows recently (love them) and I know that a window for brick is constructed differently than a window for siding. Also, the brick wall might be thicker, making room for your blinds.

I have Marvin Integrity set in Brick, Real Stone and faux Cedar shakes. The windows were set against the sheathing, the siding was really irrelevant in their installation other than the Exterior molding.
