Hand made Subway TIle vs. Machine Made?

Getting ready to order my tile for backsplash. Will we notice a difference in using hand made tile vs. machine made? I am told that you can see a difference. Need answers quick please.

If you have to ask, haven't you answered your own question?

Weigh the price difference against how strongly you feel about the 2 tiles versus how large or small your budget is. Chances are, no one but you or a designer will notice the difference.

    Handmade tiles are rather expensive.

Yes they are but I don't want to skimp if there will be a difference in the end product.

I want to make an educated decision. I"d love to hear from some tile people or designers.

Have you gone to a tile store to see what you are getting in person? Or order samples? I think then you will be able to decide if you are happy with machine made. I think you can tell the difference but it doesn't mean machine made will look cheap or bad.

For example fireclay makes beautiful handmade tile - if I had the budget I would go for it - you can tell they are handmade even in photos. But if budget is an issue as it usually is, I'd want to see something like that in person next to some other options.

Hand made is typically thicker, a bit irregular requiring a wider grout joint, square edges rather than slightly eased, has more depth of color in its glaze options rather than a very consistent color coverage of machine made, comes in a variety of clay, easily chipped but when installed on a backsplash that concern will diminish.

This is a decision that is personal- handmade really are lovely and you will be the one looking at them every day. So, that said, if it is in your budget and you love them- go for it. Handmade tiles are not as consistent in their thickness so depending on what you choose, know going in that you will not get a smooth, even installation. But that is part of their charm.

Here's 3x6 vs 2x8 herringbone patterns. It is offered to you for a visual comparison of pattern not necessarily the actual layout. A trim/liner that outlines the herringbone panel can be used as the transition piece and work to modify the size of the panel.

What does everyone think about the 2x8 with the 3x6?

Thank you for those drawings. So nice of you to do that.

Herringbone comparison with and without panel trim. Either one is okay with me as trimmed panels. If you don't use trim, then I would stay with 3x6 throughout. Also, remember, you are seeing a lot of black lines here defining each tile. If you are using white grout, then you will be seeing more texture than lines.

Thank you for your appreciation of the sketches. Even though I have been doing this for some time, a side by side visual is always helpful.

I like the variation of the 2x8 herringbone--makes it stand out more as a design element.

@Scott design I'm using white grout and a chair rail around the design so it should be alright.

Florida Tile has a subway tile that looks handmade but is very inexpensive. they're redoing their line so it will not be available until August. Does anyone know of a similar product?

Doing subway without a design in the kitchen. The tile will extend behind the vent and up to the top of the cabinetry in that area. The options are 3x9 or 2x8 - which works best for a contemporary kitchen? I'm leaning towards the 2x8. Also, I prefer just the tile without any design, and the spouse would like to see some "crackle glass liners" for a boarder. I'm trying to keep peace but question the crackle glass liner may take away from the contemporary vibe I desire. Looking at SonomaTilemakers.

In my opinion it really depends on the look that you want. I think the handmade tiles have more of a texture. Since each tile is slightly different they have different heights and edges. Kind of wavy almost. I love the look but if you want a more clean and uniform look I'd get machine made tile. I'm sure that there is a difference in price as some have already mentioned. Also, many stores will send samples, so I would definitely consider that. Good Luck
