square area rug (6x6) for small living room

I purchased a square area rug for the living room and having a hard time figuring out how to place it with a traditional length couch.

Pictures above the couch are going to be replaced.

Rug is too small that's why you're having a problem. As Kathryn said, all the legs are usually on the rug. The rug defines the space. It's not just thrown in front of a sofa like a runner.

Yep, too small. Do you really need a rug? I think that area would be served better with a coffee table instead of a rug.

Rug appears to be floating above the carpeting. I agree with tedbixby that a coffee table is what you need.

Agree you need a larger rug. Even if you get one that only goes under the front legs of the couch, can you find one that has flatter edging? I would be the first one to trip and fall the way it is now!

Thanks for the advice. I think I’m going to get a coffee table and use the rug in our office under a round conference table.

Any advice on what style coffee table?

Do you have young kids? Just wondering as often we take that into consideration for what type of table to suggest. Would a glass one work for you?

Can you post a few more photos of the room so we can get a better sense of your style, colors and finishes that are in the room.

Glass top coffee tables are good in small spaces.

Should be no less than 2 feet wider than the sofa and big enough to slip under the front 1/3 of it. Measure that out and if it isn't a standard size, go up one size. Coffee table 2/3 the width of the sofa, no higher than the seat top.

I have young grandchildren. I do have a glass coffee table in my family room though, and I was thinking another glass top coffee table for the living room. I like to add rugs just to give it a splash of color. But I will skip the rug and do it with artwork I think. The room is a work in progress. I’m going to be painting the walls of khaki color.

Your carpet appears to have a lot of pink/cool tones in it on my monitor. That needs to be considered when selecting paint. Paint has to work with the fabrics/textiles in a room. Sample, sample, sample. Buy sample pots of paint and big white poster boards. Paint the color in the middle and leave a large border of white, so your current wall color doesn't distort the sample. Move the boards around your space in different light and weather to see how it looks with the rug in day and night conditions too.
