RETIREMENT HOME: 80s Golden Oak, No Wall Space, Large T.V. -- HELP!

last modified: 7 years ago

Our “Retirement Nest” is a new trailer! I’M FIGHTING THE “CUTESY” LOOK I SEEM TO HAVE WOUND UP WITH. Would love your thoughts on my remaining concerns — and anything else you’d care to comment on.

NO WALL SPACE - Putting in so many windows, plus opening our computer room into the living room has given us the open, bright look we want … but … has left us NO wall space! Skip the wall art? Or what and where? (The clock in my photos is going to go. We cannot see it from the sofa.)

LARGE T.V. - Elephant in the room! I’d like to keep the chest it is on. Any suggestions for minimizing? The only calm, empty place in the room is above the T.V. Leave it open for balance? Decorate it? With what?

80s GOLDEN OAK FURNITURE from formal living and dining rooms in our last home; had very little use, remains in near perfect condition. Getting rid of it cannot be justified! Ideas for creating an updated look with this stuff? Paint? Not all pieces but which ones? What color?

WHITE KITCHEN - Should I go for a pop of color? How? Purchase 2 or 3 barstools (which would never be used?) Style, shape, color?

Thank you, in advance, for your time and your ideas.

It all looks very nice to me. I would add two swiveling bar stools at the island. Nice for conversation and a glass of wine when the other is cooking. You could pull a color (blue?) out of the chair fabric. I wouldn't paint your furniture. The tv is what it is.

Really charming, but the clock is too big for that wall. Maybe there's a better location for it.

I love your colors!!! Fantastic. Also, do you happen to recall or know what the paint color is on your walls? Some sort of melon shade perhaps? Very very nice. Yummmy, actually, it looks like a bit of heaven. "Why gray/greige is over-rated".......your place is proof! Or "Greige is how they make people eyes like GRAY?" :) Thanks for sharing!!!!

    1. I love bold colors, so the orange couch *must* stay :-). If you're willing to re-do the chairs from the flower pattern to solid color or striped pattern that would look great - may Be something to compliment the twin lamps by the clock. In my own home I have a navy blue sofa and rust-orange chairs which I think complement each other perfectly.

    2. Alternately you could change out the carpet to something really early gray (or an area rug) and/or repaint to something darker. it's partially because the carpet and walls are in the same color family as the furniture that you're getting overwhelmed by the gold.

    3. For decorating pieces you may to consider free standing pieces in lieu or wall hung art. A tall vase, a large plant, that sort of thing.

    4. If you're not going to use the barstools don't buy them. I couldn't possibly suggest to anyone to buy something they wouldn't use. What's the point? Instead maybe consider changing the dining table and/or chairs. Or You could just replace the cushions on the chairs to a contrasting color.

    5. Personally I like the tv size relative to the room. But if it's too big for your taste, you might want to consider two identical free standing art pieces on each side of the tv or chest, such that the top of these pieces are higher than the top of the tv. It'll frame out the tv and make it feel a little smaller.

Everything you brought into the home is great.

I would mount the tv onto the wall (hide the cords) it will look a lot better. You can hire people to do this for you (there are services). Then display a few knicknacks and photos on the piece of furniture under the tv.

Two simple, padded barstools, comfortable ones easy to get on and off. Nothing flimsy, nothing too heavy. You might find yourself sitting in them after all if they are comfortable enough.

    Goodbye big clock.

Add a creamy throw and/or throw pillow to the couch. Move the orange one to the rocker or one of the floral chairs (cover the back of it). Less flowers = less cutesy.

Get some plants. Maybe a big one (like a majesty palm, $30 at Home Depot) where the big clock is currently. Sophisticated plants, not bowls of fake flowers.

Your wood is attractive and I wouldn't paint it. I wouldn't change out any of the wood pieces, but if you see a new coffee table you love and want to trade yours out, that would probably help update the look considerably. Same for the country chairs in the dining area. You could keep the table and switch out the chairs. I wouldn't, but you could, and it would change the look a lot (getting away from country/cutesy). One thing is that they don't make furniture as well today as they did even in the 80s. I really miss my mom's old rock maple kitchen set that lasted for decades and her oak set similar to yours that my dad still has 30 years later. Pottery Barn stuff is comparatively junk. Even my solid cherry Thomasville set isn't as well made. So think about that.

The only big money I would definitely spend is to change the wall to wall carpet to another newer, updated wall to wall carpet. Put a good quality pad under it and it will feel cozy. What you have is way past its prime in an obvious way. Goodbye old carpet!

    Enjoy your retirement!

Nice and bright! I like the sofa and chairs, and I know you said you can't justify getting rid of the oak furniture... but, I would. You can sell locally and get something for it. The LR and table/chairs just do not go with your furniture or your pretty kitchen. I would also have the carpet cleaned, skip decorating the TV wall and enjoy those windows!

This one doesn't swivel, but it comes in 11 colors. You could add cushions.

I'd send the dining chairs out to be painted the same blue found in your upholstered chairs. (Just the chairs, not the table.) The TV is fine as is, remember, not long ago we "didn't see" wall phones despite their long cords. You and I are of the same age. I hereby give you permission to have any / all pieces of your furniture painted. Lovely place.

Love your place. It is colorful and bright. If you wanted to change out any of the oak, it would be ok, but the overall look is very good.

My mother has your dining set and is redecorating. I will recommend your awesome colors and some colorful pads for her chairs like yours.

I would add more orange if you buy anything but your home is wonderful. Enjoy retirement!

On another post, I was reading the comment came in: "LOVE your oak furniture! My Mom had some and a rocker, was in great shape when we sold it. I LONG for that furniture, even Pottery Barn furniture made today, is comparitively just crap, to the Oak furniture of the 80's." Resist the urge to paint it, because it does not need it. Shabby chic is not a thing in your home, and the all the whoas!! that 'original finish' 'antique furniture' garnered in the 80s' is STILL around (and that stuff from the early 1900's was U G L Y!, in alot of cases)....So don't waste money on things you have, furniture in nice condition that has been cared for, and spend your money on having the carpet refreshed? a bar stool if you can find one that is comfortable, and other things you may not have, like a couple of good quality porch chairs perhaps? or some security cameras? or a couple of nice plants(silk or real, your greenthumb knows)for inside your home. And than any money saved/ left over, order some pizza delivered and invite a friend over for a glass of red wine to enjoy with it, anytime you want! :D Enjoy your lovely home!

Your place is really charming. Honestly, I don't think it really needs any changes at all.

Having no art when you have big beautiful windows is fine. The large TV is fine. TVs are what they are, everybody has one (or two, or three), and no one thinks anything of it. The golden oak furniture is fine. I often don't like golden oak because it has strong orange tones and tends to fight with other colors, but since your decor is mostly shades of orange (and fabulous!), it fits right in. If anything, I would replace the coffee table based on its style more than its colors--if you are worried about cuteness, the cabriole legs and design on the ends are contributing to that. But you could replace it with less-cute golden oak, and it would fit right in.

Since you have the island overhang, I would probably get a couple stools. Since you say you won't use them, I'd look for something backless that you can tuck under the overhang. But the overhang doesn't look that deep, so you could probably go without.

Is this really a trailer or a modular home? It seems way too big to be a trailer! And it's very nice the way you have it. The only piece that seems "cutesy" to me is the coffee table. I don't think paint will help that unless you go very bold with color, but the couch seems the perfect touch of bold. I might look for a more modern/contemporary coffee table and sell the one you have for an updated look. Check Craigslist for something affordable.

I wouldn't change the upholstered chairs. They look like an "after" already!

Art? Maybe see about how to keep a screen saver on the tv of different paintings, when you're not watching it. :-)

Yes, to taking down the too large clock.

It's charming --- and not cutesy!

The only thing I'd suggest in addition to the what has been said, is to maybe replace the dining room lamp.

If you really wanted to, you could paint that TV dresser with General Finishes Milk Paint (it's an inside/outside paint and requires no special prep).

    Stain and paint

I would also change the dining room light, and something simple and more modern as Beverly shows is just right. Instead of the orange pillow, try some blue and cream-patterned pillows. A modern glass and metal coffee table won't cost a fortune and will instantly update your living room. Decorate with stacks of books for personality and warmth. Instead of the clock stack three small but interesting paintings in that space. I would find a way to incorporate more art with small drawings/watercolors/oils over and perhaps around the TV because I can't live without art, just something for you to consider. Please don't put that clock anywhere; it's just much too large and out of scale.

I love your colors and furniture. I would add bar stools, relocate the clock, and hang the tv over the chest. The table and chairs are a classic style and I like mine as much as I did over 30 years ago. It is difficult to find that quality and solid wood construction today. New flooring would look nice, the paint color is perfect.

I have a (very well built) Honey Oak trestle table with EIGHT (very well built) matching chairs and would kiss the feet of anyone willing to give me $500 for the set.

Any "retirement area" has this type furniture, in amazing abundance, available for a pittance (Vegas, Phoenix, the Ozarks, Florida, etc.). It was the IKEA of the 70's & 80's.

Heck, I live in mid-Michigan, golden oak capital of the world it seems, but I'm living with it because hubby likes it. Our first homes were more for me so I can deal with this one being more what he likes.

I agree that your place looks great as is, golden oak and all! The current wall color and orange sofa work really well and your patterned chairs tie it all together. I wouldn't change out the dining light as it appears to coordinate with the island pendants. I also wouldn't add island stools unless you plan to use them.

Lovely home which I agree doesn't need too many changes. Not cutesy at all but cheerful and bright.

NO WALL SPACE - Putting in so many windows, plus opening our computer room into the living room has given us the open, bright look we want … but … has left us NO wall space! Skip the wall art?

Yes : ) . Enjoy your beautiful new windows and all the great light.

The clock in my photos is going to go.

    Great idea.

LARGE T.V. - Elephant in the room! I’d like to keep the chest it is on. Any suggestions for minimizing? The only calm, empty place in the room is above the T.V. Leave it open for balance? Decorate it? With what?

Leave the space above empty. Most of us have the same elephant, which seems part and parcel of everyday life.

80s GOLDEN OAK FURNITURE from formal living and dining rooms in our last home; had very little use, remains in near perfect condition. Getting rid of it cannot be justified! Ideas for creating an updated look with this stuff? Paint? Not all pieces but which ones? What color?

Honestly, I'd leave it as is. It's balanced out nicely by the white kitchen and your living room seating.

WHITE KITCHEN - Should I go for a pop of color? How? Purchase 2 or 3 barstools (which would never be used?) Style, shape, color?

A big shallow bowl of oranges, lemons, or limes. Skip the barstools you won't use.

I think everything looks great. I read your profile and this isn't a trailer but a 1500 sq ft manufactured home. Bigger than my cape style home where we raised a family. A few suggestions that might help but aren't necessary. Stain the oak pieces the same color as the island for an updated look. 1 lamp on the console table as the 2 are crowding the window and switch the pillows to blue. Enjoy it is lovely as is.

Very pretty home! My MIL downsized from a 3 bedroom ranch to a two bedroom mobile home after my FIL died. Since they are a family who do not like to throw anything away, she ended up putting some of her things in storage so that she would not clutter up her home with everything. I know they make mobile homes now that look and feel like a regular modular house. Enjoy your new home!

I think your home is just delightful! The only think I would do might be to paint the dining chairs. Either white or a shade similar to your couch (but much lighter). Even if you keep them as is, your room is still quite lovely. Enjoy!

Here's how I justify getting rid of outdated stuff that's in great shape—I call it ‘aesthetically’ damaged.

I read your post and looked at your pictures. My thought was: "What a comfortable home - I could move right in!"

So what really bugs you about it?

I agree with removing the clock. You could mount the tv on the wall, (hiding the cords?) but is it really worth it? Same with bar stools. I would use them, but if you're sure you never would, why buy them? If you decide to get 2 anyway, choose a style that fits neatly under the island overhang - perhaps a "saddle" style?

Wall art? Your wonderful windows are wall art! And... you have a lovely glass case for displaying art objects that you can change out on your whim.

Golden oak furniture. I live in a house filled with golden oak furniture my parents accumulated during the 1980's. And golden oak kitchen cabinets they chose when they built a house in 1991. It wasn't until I started reading Gardenweb forums in 2010, I learned that golden oak was "out" and "orange-y". Up till then, I simply thought of all these pieces as "wood". And wood that went well with other (inherited) pieces in the house that date back to the 1920's- 1940's. Trendy or not - it works in MY house.

If you truly dislike golden oak, why not sell it and buy what you would like used? Might be more cost effective than buying paint, or hiring someone to professionally paint your furniture. Especially if you might not be pleased with the finished results.

Again, I suggest you ask yourself...what REALLY bugs you about your home?
