dark grey vs light grey kitchen cabinets with faux travertine counter?

I have this counter on my L-shaped kitchen counter, an island top, and as a backsplash along one wall. I want to have grey cabinets. Should I be looking dark or light? Warm or cool? My husband likes the Benjamin Moore 2124-40 (Thundercloud Grey) and 2133-50 (Pigeon Grey) . Thank you for your thoughts on this.

I personally would not match this countertop with gray cabinets.

It has touches of a blue-grey but is largely beige tones. The floor is natural pine. We are trying to get away from the browns and thought the grey would pick up this little bit. When you say "warmer" do you mean the warmer of the two colors I mentioned?

Gray will not look good at all.

I'd go with the lighter and warmer grays.

I took the liberty of adding your countertop pic below.

If Thundercloud Gray does indeed look like this, I'd stay away from this way blue gray color.

I would look at Stonington, Edgecomb, maybe Revere Pewter (It's not that beige), Harbor Gray.

Have you tried to pick a color a bit lighter than the lightest color in the stone?

No dead prison gray past its prime trendiness. It will clash horribly and be a waste of the 7-9K that you will pay a pro to coat those cabinets properly.

What would really look good with that Counter is wood cabinets. Which are back in style. Add some warm colors like corals, greens, or warm navy.

I'll add another vote for travertine-look not being a good match with gray. I would choose a nice warm-ish white. BM Simply white would work.

You might want gray cabinets, but your reality, is that it doesn't work with your counters.

Grey will not work with that counter.

I agree - no gray. Perhaps a nice green such as the "Recycled Glass" in the above SW colors.

    Another (redundant) NO to gray.

Do you have cabinets already that you are looking to paint?

I have chosen cabinets which the carpenter will paint to my specifications and install. I can choose the color for them but I have the counter top already ordered.

What wood are your cabinets and are you open to stain vs paint?

I’m not open to stain. I have wood floors, slanted double height wood ceiling. Massive Stone double height fireplace. Just too much gold/brown around and now with this counter I was hoping to break away and add color. I have a grey carpet in the living room that opens to the kitchen.

Can you post pictures of your other elements since they influence the cabinet color?

Here are some photos. The kitchen is fitting into the far right corner of the photo and will have an island where the trash can is. The next photo is the dining area that links the kitchen with the bar/living room. The living room has the fireplace but the carpet in the photo has been replace with the carpet shown in the last photo in the color called Stone which is the farthest right swatch in the middle row.

Lovely view. I'm not clear on which room is kitchen but if it's one with few windows, a very dark colour on a lot of cabinetry may make the whole thing depressing.

I think before you have your cabinets painted I'd at least do testers to see if you like the colour in your light. Before you pay for that you could also try this trick which I've done before: buy several towels in different shades of the colour you are considering (warmer and cooler) from a place that allows you to return towels if unused for full money back. Lay the towels where they won't get dirty in your space and see if the warmer or cooler ones are working better for you.

I would also consider what accent colours are going to be around the different rooms seeing as its open concept sort of forces them to ideally be harmonious.

Have you considered looking beyond grey and considered blue? It could be quite stunning with your wood and it will still work with your carpeting and countertop. Also, blue isn't going to look trendy and go out of style..

I hadn’t considered blue but would be open to it. Is there a shade you’d r commend?

By the way, beautiful view :) Blue cabinets would bring in that beautiful sky so you keep that organic feel going that is already going on with the fireplace stone and log posts.

I'm looking for some photos and of course when I want to find them, I can't. That SW 6544 color Sophie shows might be a possibility. What do you think of it?

What is the style of your cabinet fronts?

What are you doing for kitchen flooring?

I came across this article that shows different blues. Don't look at the kitchens, just focus on the cabinet colors. Any of the blues speak to you?

I'm also a fan of a light glazing as I think it gives cabinets some depth and is often found in higher- end "rustic" mountain homes.

My kitchen are the pine shown in the photos. Here are some swatches I found of the fabrics in my living room. The tweedy blue is my couch, the spotted one my throw pillows and the grey my arm chairs. The rug is the grey I showed before. Am I going for a blue cabinet now?
I meant to say the floors are the pine. The cabinet style I chose is akin to a Shaker style
  • 7 years ago

Well, this helps. The tweed on my monitor is showing up greyish brown. You say it is blue though.. And the bottom lower one is grey? It's showing tan on my monitor. Though the grey in the pillow fabric is showing as grey. Ghezz, talk about monitor color distortion...

And do we also need to consider the fabric on dining room chairs?

No. Chairs are luctite Ghost chairs and table is glass with gold base.
Sorry the Monitor is showing incorrectly. The colors are as I said though the blue tweed has grey tone. I’d hoped to have grey cabinets but does everyone now think I should be looking at blues? And is it because the blue will tie more with my outdoors and that’s more important than my cabinets picking up a
Hint of some grey in my counter

I don't think anyone except me is saying blue but so far the consensus is no to grey with your counter. Since your walls are bare right now, why not get pints of the 2 greys and paint samples on the wall. This way it gives you an idea how it looks and see how the paint changes in the light. If those 2 greys aren't working for you, then you can circle back here and we can go from there.

By the way, if you look at your slab that is leaning against that metal pole, it looks like the pole is a dark grey so it gives you an idea if that "hint" of grey (which I don't see) will work with grey..

Thundercloud???? Then pigeon. Both bad (look blue) with the counters.

We just chose our interior and exterior colours and for both went with an entirely different grey than we thought we would after doing large test areas. I highly recommend painting something in the space to have it against the counter then choosing.

Greige or white, but not gray

your beautiful home is a "warm earthy" palette. stay with the warms. no gray at all in the living space. maybe BR - PR if you really want gray.

the greige cab color Beverly picked out is nice.

how about a warm earthy green?

No to gray. Blue could look nice. Or those greens.

Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter that was shown by nosoccermom is a very nice greige color that might work for your cabinets. BM Pale Oak and Edgecomb gray are worth considering, also. I always have to do poster boards of my paint samples and move them around the room before I can decide on a color.

Good luck with choosing a perfect color for your cabinets. You have a lovely home.

If you insist on gray for your cabinets, go with the warm and as light gray as possible. Have you considered off-white? You would avoid earthy/brownish tones and you could easily combine it with navy.

You’ve all been amazing. I have a lot of terrific suggestions. I’ll get on them and hopefully in many months I can post a picture of the final thing. Thanks all.
