Unless you've been spraying a whole lot of Roundup around the plant, it has rose rosette virus (RRV), and it cannot be saved. Please spray it with hairspray thoroughly, gently dig it up, and cover it with a bag and discard. I'm really sorry, that is as bad of a case as I've ever seen.

Uh Oh, look up Rose Rosette Disease - your rose looks like pictures I have seen of it. I am not an expert at all, but it is a very BAD disease which is spread by some sort of infinitesimally small insect, so it is "contagious" in that way. Most people dig up infested roses and throw them away.

Also - a possibility - have you or anyone else sprayed Roundup or other plant killing chemicals near this rose, or somewhere where it could drift on to this rose?

Hopefully someone who knows more than I do will see this and give you advice.

If you dug out this rose, you could plant another in the same place if you got all the roots out (which can be daunting with some rootstocks). Are there any other roses with these symptoms upwind from your yard? There's no guarantee another rose won't get this disease if it is present in your neighborhood.

Oh my dear heavens, I’m so sorry to tell you this but your rose has a virus called rose rosette disease. Something that you will on here referred to as rrd or rr. There is no cure for the disease. Yours has been infected for long enough that the disease is systemic now. In other words the disease has gone to the roots and has spread thru the entire plants and should be dug out. If you have other roses do keep an eye out for odd growth.

That is almost certainly advanced Rose Rosette Disease, which cannot be cured. Please dig it up, bag it , throw it away in regular trash (not landscape recyclables). Make sure you don’t touch any neighboring rosebushes. Sterilize your pruners and shovel with Lysol. Clean up the area around it of any rose debris. After a few weeks you can plant another rose in its place if you wish.

That is classic Rose Rosette Virus. The rose is doomed to die. It must be removed carefully, placed into a large plastic bag, and put out for household trash collection. All parts of the bush are infected: roots, stems, leaves and flowers. Healthy looking growth is still infected.

Your Julia Child must be removed off your premesis because it is highly contagious to other roses. The virus is spread by a mite through it sucking the rose's sap. The mites travel from rose bush to rose bush by means of the wind carrying them away to infest a nearby bush.

I am sorry for your troubles. Rose Rosette Virus is a very serious disease and it is getting worse across the USA.

Keep an eye on your other roses, some of which may already be infected, too. There is no cure for an infected bush. An infected bush must be removed. I hope your Julia Child is your only infected bush.

Mykevs.... so probably other people on forum are not able to comment on your post. This is a case of RRD . This plant has to be taken out bagged and put it in trash. Try to put a bag over it when you are taking it out. Don’t put it in green bin. It belongs to the trash bin. I hope it’s not spread already around you to other roses.

Looks similar to herbicide damage, especially those with hormones. Roundup can also cause weird growth. The flowers won't open properly. Did you introduce any new compost or soil, or sprayed any weedkiller before this showed?

It is on the edge of the grass where im sure a lot of my Scotts step 4 products hit it. Could that cause something like this ? Not sure why, but seems like I got responses all at once.

John, OP states its been like this for a few years, and after seeing the other threads started to tell them RRD (was an issue responding to this post) I concur wholeheartedly.

No it was there last year and I pruned off the strange growth but it’s back this year. It still flushed out in the spring. Unless my neighbor is using something and I’m not aware of it, all I use are the scotts products.

Wait a year before you plant another rose in that spot. Hard to do, I know, but left-behind bits of roots seem to be capable of infecting a new rose planted in the same spot.
