What to put under tile to avoid high transition??

Hi all!

I'm reaching out to tile professionals momentarily, but I would love to hear from any of you who have been in a similar transition.

Gut renovation of an old (1925) house and we are deciding how to prep the floor for the kitchen tile (that extends down the hallway). 170 sq ft total

The problem is, the new floor will be higher than the existing 3/8" parquet wood floor. Question is, how high? Family member who is leading the renovation as well as general contractor (who does tile), have ONLY worked with a mud bed. Using a mud bed would make the transition upwards of 2" height different between floors. points of transition are at kitchen (a 5 foot span), and at 2 bedrooms.

SO I'm trying to reduce that and through research and referrals have come upon Wonderboard as a solution. The 3/4" plywood, thin set, Wonderboard, then 3/8" tile would bring the height difference to 3/4" which is MUCH more manageable in my opinion.

They disagree and say wonderboard will crack, and contractor won't do it because he's never done it before. What do you all think?

Thank you!!
