please give me advise on how to add furniture and what color/types to place within this room. It’s one big open loving room with the couch in the front of the fireplace. I have the brown one
There just Bc it’s somewhere To put it but i am not using it. Advise on what to get to brighten up the room(recessed lighting sucks) and add furniture.
Thank you!!!!!

Or a round table...it's pretty easy to switch out your 3 light fixtures for one (you can easily patch the other two holes)...

I like the green chair. I agree that it complements the rug well. I wouldn't put Nana's console behind the sofa since it will be too hidden and you won't be able to appreciate how beautiful it is.

    Background isn't white... casual ?

Thank you! Yes, I love those

If you don't paint first, you'll have that much more to move out of the way and protect from paint splatter.

There are long handles for paint pads and/or rollers (threaded to attach to the handle) that would let you reach well above the usual wall 8' height.

Saw the clearer pic of the cat lamp. Liking the cat lamp -- hope you'll keep it even if you decide to change the shade.

Liking the narrow antique sofa table. Would make a good room sofa table and/or room divider (in lieu of any pony wall. If you want to add color at/on/in that table and it's away from light needed for live plants, you might consider glass flowers in a vase -- long or short stem.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=long+stem+glass+flowers&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjAlpWGtqXdAhVKUt8KHZdSBYcQsxgIJg&biw=1366&bih=650

Don't overcrowd your space, even after you repaint -- it would make it look and feel smaller.

Sometimes changing a lamp shade can change the way a lamp fits in the room. Like lamp shades can make different lamps work together in the same space.

Cat lamp? Do you mean the monkey?

I already painted ! Did you not see the photos?
ANd yes it’s a monkey lamp and it’s an antique so the shade is not removable
  • 6 years ago

I am a little late to the party. The room is looking sooooo good. Can't wait to see it finished.

Above you asked about the rug size. I think it looks great.

If you feel it is encroaching on the doorway entrance. Move the rug towards the wall just a little by splitting the difference on both sides. That alone may give you the room you desire. Even if it it is an inch or two.

That monkey lamp is a prize. Mainland-Smith Monkey Lamp There are other lamps in the series. Hang on to it. It is probably worth more than your recent purchases combined. I suspect the other lamps are also Maitland-Smith.

You have made so many amazing improvements! I'm wondering if you like either of these tables from West Elm? You could consider putting your round rug down on the other side of the room, put a table on it. Use your 2 "random, $50 chairs" for chairs around a table. You could also put your beautiful antique sofa table along that back wall on that side of the room, then fill in with art on the wall, lamps, plants.

YEs the lamp was my grandmothers. All of my expensive stuff is from her. Lol. Def can’t afford a 2000$ lamp
  • 6 years ago
I do like that idea just trying to get rid f this brown sofa and ottoman and find s good deal on a table once I get everything out of the way. I have that glass round low table, would that work ? Probably not since it’s low
    To the ground

I suggested this above - since you have the pieces:

"Ok, try this on the other side of the room: Nana's sofa table centered on the long wall, old coffee table in the center of the room, two black new chairs around the coffee table.

Where are you going to do jigsaw puzzles? Do you have any art, a pair of simple lamps? Not the fringe ones from the before picture. "

    And I agreed.....but I like a dining-height table for ease of use...

A table isn't just for eating. However, you have to have some kind of table centerpiece or something pretty...otherwise it becomes a dumping ground for mail and bags and whatnot.

I wish I had relatives with nice things ;) The last thing my mom gave me was a cold.

Go ahead and try the suggested set up on the other side of the room with your lower table. You can see if you like the general look.

Your antique lamps are interesting. The ones with the fringe shades may be refreshed with a new shade.

You have a lot of furniture. I know you are in the process of deciding what to keep and what to sell/donate, and what you might use in another part of the house.

Where is your new ottoman that goes with your new sofa?

Guys. This is exhausting . Moving all this stuff around with no help trying to figure out what to do.

I think that table will look weird on that big wall. What if the couch faced like the leather chair is then had the console behind it? Until I can sell tje couch and ottoman
  • 6 years ago
I know it’s not going to look like this so please bear with me! I’m taking a resting break
  • 6 years ago
Step one . Rug down. So before any other ideas I’m waiting to move anything else lol
    This is a cluster

I forgot you still had the other sofa. If you want it to look good while you cut down on the furniture, here is an arrangement. Sofa on the long wall, slide brown chair toward long wall with the back stills to the window. Old coffee table on the rug. Old end tables in place. Nana's table back where it was on the middle wall.

If you have any blue throw pillows, put them on the brown sofa and chair.

    Take a break, girl!

Go call friends and family. Have pizza and beer ready. There's no substitute for actually being in the space...so I'm sure they can "see" things that we can't..

Okay. All my stuff arrived. Here’s where you guys come into play. I put all of my stuff on the wall (decorative things) lamps etc and I need advise
Where to put what . There will be a console table behind my sectional and then I plan on a desk on the wall that’s empty, but if I get rid of couch may move things around.
How should I start ? Where
Do I put the chairs? Is the blue too grounded in this room? Lamps? Decorations?
ANd yes I know the cluttter trash etc is not aesthetically pleasing. It’s just temporary while I figure out where to put what
  • 6 years ago

Starting with the fireplace area-I like the two chairs. The scale is good and they add a bit of color to the area. Either the ottoman or the coffee table should stay but not both. I'm afraid that a desk on the empty wall is going to be too crowded. Right now, the amount of furniture you have in the space feels just right.

While you're fortunate to have such a large space, I think you really need to decide how you want the other area to function before you put anything else in there. Do you need an office area? A table, as mentioned before, to have a cup of coffee with a friend or play a board game? A small library/reading area? IMO, I would sell your old coffee table, the torchiere lamp, and all the brown microfiber furniture. Keep what's most sentimental to you. It seems the space could use some new blinds and curtains too.

I thought you were using your gray sofa? Or is that the gray sofa in there (colors on monitors are so not the reality :(

pennydesign, right now there are two seating areas in the large space. The gray sectional and some of the new furniture are over by the fireplace. We were playing around with the old brown set, tables and Nana's sofa table over where the three ceiling lights are.

YEs Im trying to sell the brown sofa and chair w ottoman but for now i still have it.
What lamps do I put where and what tables do I put where. And the random decoratives..
    last modified: 6 years ago

This is a temporary look until some of the furniture is gone. Put all new furniture on the sectional side, old things with the brown sofa.

    * Pull round rug close to brown sofa. Chess set in center of old coffee table. Blue and golden/green jugs set to upper portion of buildin bookshelf for decor. Pair of black metal lamps on ends of Nana's sofa table. Tall black metal lamp between brown chair and kitchen door. Blue hydrangea potted plant in center of sofa table. You can lean Nana's portrait there or hang it on the wall between the two doors. Center at about 5feet off the floor.

    * New end table with silver table lamp at end of sectional closest to hall door.. Tall silver floor lamp either in corner where you have it or at end of sectional chaise. Other new end table between turquoise chairs.

    * Declutter and group remaining remaining decor items in the bottom of Nana's sofa table so we can see what is left. Also group things in the top if the bookcase so we can see what space is available.

Is the black metal table and wood plank your new desk or a new sofa table?

I'm wondering if your two turquoise chairs would look good around a dining-height table (providing that you can get 2 more).

OR you can get 2 similar-but-different chairs that go with the greenish yellow, and black ones to go around the table...

Hi laural9! I like the colors that I can see. What changes have you made to the rooms? I know going neutral and away from the red wall made a huge difference right away?

Yes the walls make a difference
    Still figuring out my setup

Getting window fixed that’s why table is far out

Leave or incorporate into other room with rug facing the other way and move the other chairs

Should I move couch to wall in front of window ( which is getting replaced )

If you move the couch to the window, where would you put the credenza?

Pictures are kinda of dark, but I would keep the sofa on the big wall where you have it. There is plenty of space. Turn the rug the other way, long side parallel to the sofa.

What is the dark thing between the yellow/green chair and the gray sofa, on the right side?

    Thus?

    last modified: 5 years ago

:-) No. You must have moved things around. Look at the picture from two days ago. It might be at the bottom of the newest picture. Something puffy and black. A dog, puffy armless chair, comforter?

Oh lol it’s a sofa couch. (Obvi doesn’t go but it’s more for comfort and gaming. It goes in the bedroom or closet if I needed to have guests
