Is artwork featuring a mountain redundant or contrived?

An interior designer and online blogger that I follow recently gave me some input on decorating our cabin in the mountains. I knew the look and feel I wanted but wasn’t sure how to achieve it. Needless to say I was thrilled when she did a blog post specifically targeting my issue and gave me many great pointers. One thing she said, which I hadn’t gotten around to thinking about yet was about the artwork for the huge river rock fireplace. She said I needed a large black and white pice of art. She didn’t go into specifics, I wouldn’t expect her to.

I love to go to art galleries and arts festivals so this will be a fun project. However it may take me years to find something I love that I’m willing to spend significant money on(I know I’m looking into spending at minimum $1000, but probably more).

I came across another design blog recently and saw a fabulous, huge black and white piece. It is not something that I would want, but I loved the overall look. Imagine my surprise when I read that the piece was actually a shower curtain stretched over a canvas!! here it is,

This got me thinking that I could do something similar and have something hung up and not feel rushed then to find a piece. So I’ve been looking at black and white shower curtains and have found quite a few. Would a mountain scene or tree scene be too cutesy?

If it matters, here is the my great room. Not my furniture.

OK for something probably relatively inexpensive and perhaps temporary, I think the reindeer is a hoot. Kind of a take off on a family portrait? Would you have some place else to use it for when you found the perfect piece?

May not be too funny if your family hunts. :-0

Personally, too cutesy for my tastes, even temporarily. The mountains don't do much.

I loved the blog featuring your questions!

I am in the middle of decorating a ski house that is full of wood and looks like a page out of a Ralph Lauren Chaps ad campaign circa 1985. I completely agree with the need for black and white art. I have decided to use black and white photography, both representational and abstract, in the ski house.

I don't think mountain scenes are a great idea. They will make everything else look like a cliché too.

With your octopus in mind I searched Saatchi Art under, Black and white pen and ink and found some nice things. There is a lot to look at on that site.

Have to say I'm loving that shower curtain idea for large scale 'art' - how about a hipster deer? LOL!

i would take a picture of something that has meaning or just something simple that you/family love, take it in b/w., then get it on a canvas and hang on stone FP.

it could be a single sunflower, a lake, the ocean, favorite spot in your home town- really anything and get it done though a mail order company. eg. snapfish, shutterfly etc.

this way it has meaning/special and not just something random.

For something temporary, I think the deer are great. I don't necessarily agree with the the designer/blogger's suggestion for black and white. I'd want to see something more in line with the surroundings.

I think stretching fabric over canvas is a great way to get a cheap piece of large artwork. You can also put wallpaper over a piece of canvas for a cheap alternative. Perhaps a b/w wallpaper mural. I am also all for temporary pieces of art until you discover something that really speaks to you. There are all sorts of ways to get cheap art if you aren't afraid of a little diy.
