Help with open-concept living room/dining room furnishings

Hello, We just moved into a new home. Our china closet and dining set is a oak finish. I feel that in our new house it now looks

really dated and I should paint/refinish it....but have no clue what would look best. I plan on changing up the ladderback chairs too...so I can have a more contemporary look . Would appreciate any suggestions on what color to refinish the table and china hutch AND what type of dining chairs would look best. Thanks in advance for any help...appreciate it!!

We comment based on impressions from our monitors, rather than actually being in your space, so take it with a grain of salt! It appears to me that the scale of the dining table and chairs is off compared to the rest of the visible furnishings. Would you consider replacing the table and chairs rather than painting them? If so, I suggest a round (60") table with more substantial chairs.

Thank you Patricia! Yes I am open to ANY suggestions!! What do you mean by 'substantial chairs" ....can you send me a picture? Sorry....I'm a bit clueless. : )

...and Patricia....any ideas as to the color for the hutch and table/chairs?

Here's a link to an example of a round table and more substantial chairs. https://www.houzz.com/photos/lakehouse-rustic-dining-room-nashville-phvw-vp~83413359

Your hutch does not have to "match" the table and chairs and could be painted or simply stained a little darker to be more contemporary. Also from my monitor, I would consider replacing the dining light fixture to a bit more contemporary. BTW, congrats on your new home which looks so inviting and comfy!

Thank you!! The light fixture was on the top of our list too ...haha! When you said the hutch stained/painted darker.....would you be suggesting a more brown tone stain...or what color if painted? Appreciate your time!

Glad to comment. I think the lighter oak appearance of the hutch could be easily (yeah, I'm not doing the work - ha!) changed with a nice stain and that could be a beautiful color other than "wood" tones. Look at the min wax stains on line. Painting is an option, but the wood grain is often more emphasized with paint, so why not highlight it with a beautiful stain. According to what you do about a dining table and chairs, I would stain the hutch in a complimentary color. I'll look for an example and shoot it to you.

I'm good with 'doing the work'! I really enjoy refinishing. : )

Here's an example of a restained hutch in a color that evidentially coordinates with the room. I'm not suggesting green for you, but encouraging you to consider a color of stain that will work with your "new" dining table/chairs. https://www.houzz.com/photos/from-the-land-by-daniel-p-gregory-traditional-dining-room-san-francisco-phvw-vp~8058106

I agree that the scale of your table and chairs are a bit off, but not terribly so and they could be make to work with a more modern light fixture. The oak itself looks good; it's not that horribly orange stuff, so I would leave it as is. The china cabinet does date the space and I would replace it with a sideboard with art above.

My focus was totally taken to the huge, dark entertainment center. If you could remove the shelves and bridge so the base is all that remains, that might be a salvageable item. If the base is scarred by removal of the shelves, you could have it topped with granite, marble or other stone product. I would focus my effort on re-sizing your furnishings all around as budget permits. I'd go bigger than the dining set but smaller than the lounger and overstuffed sofas. Meanwhile, I'd like to see the love seat pulled off of that corner by the china. Since the dining table and chairs are more of a kitchen style, do you have a breakfast area for them?

Thank you. We already have a separate dinette set in the kitchen area...which is a smaller area with a small table and 4 chairs. I have no problem with changing up the dining table and chairs. Just don't know what style. We arn't real 'formal people...more on the casual side. : )

...where would you suggest we move the love seat?

wow! Thats a great idea too

A couple things that would modernize your look besides what Groveraxle has shown you:

--Hardwood floors in a warm color. Wall to wall in living areas is dated, and the color you have doesn't work well with your paint or wood furniture.

--A long, low console cabinet or bookcases in a warm, wood color like your dining table would give your TV area a streamlined look. Your entertainment center is heavy looking and pulls down the room.

You ask about a china cabinet and houzzers reconfirgure your entire home. :(

Patricia Hall, she asked about modernizing the room. You can stain or paint that china cabinet and it's still going to be dated.

Thank you to everyone. As I mentioned we just moved in. The sellers obviously painted the whole house in the typical neutral fashion. I don't like the color of the walls. My first priority was the dining set and hutch. I wanted to get opinions if the set was salvageable or not....we've had the set for quite awhile in our old home and didn't know if it would 'work' in our new home. : ) We have plans in place to paint and put hardwood flooring down. Just thought that we should start with the furniture first and then choose paint/flooring after that.

Great, Sally. Hope we didn't overwhelm you with too much information. Most of us do go for a holistic approach to space since no single element exists in a room by itself; they connect through layout, style, finishes, palettes. Sometimes the "problem child" isn't the actual problem, or the only problem, and getting a bunch of alternative suggestions can be useful. Your room is lovely as is, frankly. If you are getting wood flooring, that will definitely modernize the room without your doing anything else. Feel free to post again with all the details at the outset--i.e. not loving the paint, getting wood floors, etc.--then people won't chime in with too much information.

Good luck with your new home. You have beautiful pieces.

So I would make a few suggestions about changing positions of furnishings. I don't think walking into the side of the china cabinet is welcoming. On that feature wall I would place your dining room mirror vertically with a small console below the mirror.

I would place a canvas where you have the mirror, add a round table with four chairs and a orb cage light above.

I would place your china cabinet where you had the desk. Seems like a better location for the cabinet.

    Thank you everyone!

Again thanks to everyone for all your wonderful suggestions! I'll take a step back and ask if anyone has suggestions for wall paint color.......because I definitely am not a fan of the current color! As I mentioned earlier....the previous owner painted every room that same color. : / Hardwood floors are in future plans....but budget issues say ...not right now.
    Thanks in advance!!
