Marvin Sliding French Door vs. Sliding Patio Door

I had a Marvin rep tell me that most thin frame contemporary sliding doors suck. He recommended the French Sliding door even though we prefer the thinner profile of the patio sliding door. He says they just slide better, have better hardware, and that they are worth the small additional cost.

This will be a big slider.... 16' x 8'.

Our other option is Andersen E-Series.

What do you guys think? Any experiences?

Back in the day I sold many of the Marvin sliding patio doors, far as I know they usse the same hardware as the sliding french. In a quality door it should not matter unless things have chnaged and I doubt Marvin went backwards. I owuld do the Marvin over E series for the same reasons listed on your other post. Superior fit and finish.

I chose the Marvin Ultimates french sliding door over the Marvin contemporary sliding patio door simply because I liked its look and "feel" better. Has nothing to do with contemporary or not - both styles will look good in a contemporary setting. I advise you to go to a showroom where they are both on display, and that is your best way to choose between them. You may find that for you, the narrow profile is preferable, or you may not.

Thanks -- generally I think most would say that the thicker french style tends to lean more traditional than modern or contemporary. However, I agree both would work fine in a contemporary setting, especially with the larger size.

When you said you liked the "feel" better, are you referring to how easily it opened and closed?

I would call in another Marvin Dealer as if you were starting from scratch. Have them come in for a consult and a second estimate. Ask the question and see what he/she says. Even if you’re happy with the first dealer, dealers can charge differently so at least you’ll have something to compare apples to apples with. I actually have two appointments scheduled for Sunrise windows next week, but I’m not actually sure which dealer I’ll end up with.

I have to say though both my mother and my sister had the french doors installed. They weren’t Marvins but they were extremely happy with that style.
