Lighting in Living Room

We have a living room with a high slopes ceiling that gets NW light so it needs help. (To give you a sense, the photos below were taken at the brightest time of day.) We’re doing some painting and other stuff so now seems like the time.

We are _not_ doing recessed lighting here. The ceiling’s too high, there’s insulation to deal with (and yes, I know about enclosed cans and all, but there’s plenty of reports of those still creating enough warmth to facilitate ice damns in the winter and we live in MN), AND my husband is also vehemently opposed to them there.

So, that out of the way, we’re thinking of a couple of large ceiling fixtures (like big drum lights that would diffuse throughout the room) and maybe some sconces or wall lights either on the wall to the left (where the sofa normally lives) or the wall straight ahead where the black console is (there will be a fireplace). Floor and table lamps make sense, too, but we have a special needs kiddo who breaks things so we try to avoid those. But honestly, I just don’t know and keep second guessing all possibilities.

Here’s are a couple of pics of the space before it was all torn up (which it is now as we’ve had popcorn ceilings removed and are preparing to paint—a mid-tone greige with white trim) and also a pic from the former owners. The only thing from our photos (the first 2) that will remain in the room is the leather sofa.
